Abstract

Process for the heat treatment of a biological sludge in which the pH of the sludge is adjusted to a value of between 3.0 and 4.5 and the sludge is then treated in a reactor 3 at a temperature which is lower than the temperature of conventional heat treatment of biological sludge at 110-150 DEG C and at a pressure which is lower than that of the conventional heat treatment. The dehydration properties of the sludge are appreciably improved in the treatment. As a result of the low pressure, the energy of a backpressure steam in the temperature range 110-130 DEG C can be employed for heating the sludge. It is further possible to improve the treatment by adding to the sludge a chemical substance acting as an oxidising agent. Less organic matter is dissolved in the process and more nutrient substances in relation to the quantity of organic matter dissolved than in the conventional heat treatment. The nutrient substance economy of the purification equipment can be adjusted by changing the treatment conditions. <IMAGE>
