Abstract
1448772 Epoxy resins DOW CHEMICAL CO 30 Jan 1974 04345/74 Heading C3B The reaction between epoxy resins and phenols is catalysted by a 3-(trihydrocarbylphosphorarylidine)-2,5-pyrrolidinedione (I). I may have the formula in which each R is phenyl or C 1-18 alkyl and R<SP>1</SP> is H, phenyl or C 1-4 alkyl. I may be used at 0À05-5% based on the combined weight of epoxy resin and phenol. Reaction may take place at 50-225‹ C. Diglycidyl ethers of dihydric phenols and epoxy novolacs are suitable starting materials which may be reacted with dihydric phenols to yield epoxy resins of higher M.W. Also claimed are compositions of epoxy resins and I.
