Working fluid e.g. water from a source 18 is supplied alternately to opposite ends of a motor cylinder 12 containing a reciprocating piston 10 through a conventional load-sensitive fluidic bi-stable device 16 and non-return valves 19, 20 in conduits 14, 15 leading to said cylinder ends, and cylinder exhaust is passed to a reservoir 28 through a branch line of say conduit 15 between the closed non-return valve 20 and the cylinder end and through a control valve 22 maintained open by pressure in the flow passage thereof; a control valve 23 in the corresponding branch line of conduit 14 being held closed by pressure in conduit 14 upstream of valve 19 transmitted through a second branch line. The piston 10 has integral pumping pistons 11 housed in cylinder 13 and which draw from a tank 26 through one or other of check valves 27, and deliver to reservoir 28 through one or other check valves 29. The valves 19, 20, 22, 23 are of the free foil element type. The tank 26 may contain concentrated dialysate which it is desired to dilute with water prior to use in an artificial kidney machine.
