Some of these objects are achieved with a method according to claim 1. Other objects areachieved with a system in accordance with what is depicted herein. Advantageousembodiments are depicted in the dependent claims. Substantially the same advantages ofmethod steps of the innovative method hold true for corresponding means of the innovative system.
According to an aspect of the invention there is provided a method for provision of a liquidsubstance for an internal combustion engine configuration, said engine configurationcomprising a first tank unit for holding said liquid substance and a second tank unit forholding said liquid substance, a first pump unit for providing liquid substance from said firsttank unit to said second tank unit, a second pump unit for providing liquid substance fromsaid second tank unit for consumption within said engine configuration. The method comprises the steps of: - continuously determining a mass flow of said liquid substance taken from said second tankunit for consumption within said engine configuration; - continuously determining a prevailing remaining amount of said liquid substance in saidsecond tank unit based on said determined mass flow of said liquid substance taken from said second tank unit; and - according to predetermined criteria relating to the prevailing remaining amount of saidliquid substance in said second tank unit, providing liquid substance to said second tank unit from said first tank unit.
Advantageously a reliable and accurate method for provision of a liquid substance isprovided. Further, by determining/estimating the prevailing remaining amount of liquidsubstance in the second tank unit, there is no need for a level sensor arranged at said secondtank unit. This advantageously provides a cost effective operation according to the inventive method.
According to one example a suitable time interval regarding provision of liquid substance tosaid second tank unit from said first tank unit may be determined/predicted/estimated onthe basis of said determined prevailing remaining amount of said liquid substance in saidsecond tank unit. Said predetermined criteria may pay regard to the operation of said engine configuration.
According to one example said mass flow of liquid substance taken from said second tankunit may be determined/estimated/calculated/modelled on the basis of operation of saidsecond pump unit.
The method may comprise the step of: - continuously determining a consumed amount of said liquid Substance provided inaccordance with a control unit for operating said engine configuration. This may beperformed by determining an amount of injected liquid substance to said engineconfiguration and/or by determining emission parameters (e.g. NOx or Oxygen content) ofan exhaust gas from a combustion engine of said engine configuration. This advantageouslyprovides a versatile method. Further this provides an accurate method for provision of said liquid substance. The method may comprise the step of: - continuously determining a consumed amount of said liquid substance on the basis ofoperation of said second pump unit. This may be performed by determining a mass flow ofsaid liquid substance from said second tank unit for consumption within said engineconfiguration subtracted by a determined return mass flow from a combustion engine ofsaid engine configuration to said second tank unit. This allows to accurately determine a consumed amount of said liquid substance. The method may comprise the step of: - continuously determining an amount of return liquid substance not included in said consumption but provided back to said second tank unit.
The determined consumed amount of said liquid substance may be used to determine said prevailing remaining amount of substance liquid in said second tank. The method may comprise the step of: - when, according to said predetermined criteria, liquid substance to said second tank unitfrom said first tank unit is provided to said second tank unit, filling said second tank unit to apredetermined extent. This advantageously allows to adequately and suitably provide saidliquid substance to said second tank unit, both in terms of provision rate, timing regarding provision and amount of provided liquid substance. The method may comprise the step of: - continuously providing said liquid substance to said second tank unit on the basis of said prevailing remaining amount of liquid substance in the second tank. Hereby provision may be performed continuously, and not intermittently, which renders less wear of the firstpump unit as well as more desired operational conditions ofthe first pump unit, e.g. relatively low rpm.The method may comprise the step of: - continuously providing said liquid substance to said second tank unit on the basis of saidconsumption within said engine configuration. Hereby provision may be performedcontinuously, and not intermittently, which renders less wear ofthe first pump unit as well as more desired operational conditions ofthe first pump unit, e.g. relatively low rpm.
Said liquid substance may be a fuel substance or a reducing agent for emission control. Themethod is thus versatile and applicable for various liquid substance provision systems, e.g. afuel supply system or an SCR-system presenting two tank units for holding a reducing agent comprising e.g. urea.

Saidfirst control unit 200 is arranged to determine/estimate/calculate/model said second mass flow value m2 on the basis of operation of said second pump unit 270.
A first return passage P291 is arranged to provide a first leak flow mlleak of said providedliquid fuel substance from said combustion engine 290 to said second tank unit 250. This isdue to that some of the provided fuel is used for other purposes at said combustion engine290 than combustion. Said first flow mlleak may be determined by means of a mass flowsensor (not shown). Alternatively said first flow mlleak may be determined by said firstcontrol unit 200 by modelling/calculating/estimating said first flow mlleak. Said first flowmlleak may be a predetermined leak flow. Said first leak flow may have been determined empirically.
A second return passage P251 is arranged to, when applicable, provide a second leak flowm2leak of said liquid fuel substance from said second tank unit 250 to said first tank unit220. Said second return passage P251 is arranged to allow said second leak flow m2leak at astate where said second tank unit 250 is substantially, or completely, full, thus providing a reliable safety function regarding undesired extensive filling ofthe second tank unit. 13 The first control unit 200 is arranged to continuously determining the mass flow m2 of saidliquid substance taken from said second tank unit 250 for consumption within said engineconfiguration 299. According to one example this may be performed by means of saidsecond mass flow sensor 285. According to one example this may be performed by means ofsaid second mass flow sensor 285 and by determining said first flow mlleak so as todetermine an actually consumed amount of said liquid substance. According to one examplethis may be performed by determining an amount of injected fuel to the combustion engineofthe engine configuration 299. According to one example this may be performed bydetermining an amount of injected reducing agent to the emission passage of thecombustion engine of the engine configuration 299. According to one example this may beperformed on the basis of a determined amount of supplied air for said combustion engineof said engine configuration 299 and a determined oxygen amount value of emissions from said combustion engine of said engine configuration 299.
The first control unit 200 is arranged to continuously determining a prevailing remainingamount of said liquid substance in said second tank unit 250. Said prevailing remainingamount of liquid substance is suitably determined based on said determined mass flow m2of said liquid substance taken from said second tank unit 250 for consumption within saidengine configuration 299. This is advantageously performed with no need for a fuel/reducing agent level sensor unit of the second tank unit 250.
The first control unit 200 may be arranged to, according to predetermined criteriacomprising a liquid substance amount in said second tank unit 250, control provision of saidliquid substance to said second tank unit 250 from said first tank unit 220. The first controlunit 200 is suitably arranged to, according to predetermined criteria relating to theprevailing remaining amount of liquid substance in said second tank unit 250, controlprovision of said liquid substance to said second tank unit 250 from said first tank unit 220.Said predetermined criteria may relate to a certain fuel volume/level of said liquid substanceamount in said second tank unit 250. Said predetermined criteria may relate to a certainpredetermined fuel volume/level of said liquid substance amount in said second tank unit250. Said predetermined criteria may relate to a certain desired minimum fuel volume/level of said liquid substance amount in said second tank unit 250. Thus, the first control unit 200 14 may be arranged to provide liquid Substance to said second tank unit 250 if the determinedprevailing remaining amount of liquid substance in the second tank unit 250 does not fulfilthe predetermined criteria. The first control unit 200 may be arranged to provide liquidsubstance to said second tank unit 250 if the determined prevailing remaining amount ofliquid substance in the second tank unit 250 is below a predetermined level according to the predetermined criteria.
A second control unit 210 is arranged for communication with the first control unit 200 via alink L210. lt may be releasably connected to the first control unit 200. lt may be a control unitexternal to the vehicle 100. lt may be adapted to performing the innovative steps accordingto the invention. lt may be used to cross-load software to the first control unit 200, particularlysoftware for applying the innovative method. lt may alternatively be arranged forcommunication with the first control unit 200 via an internal network on board the vehicle. ltmay be adapted to performing functions corresponding to those of the first control unit 200,such as according to predetermined criteria comprising a liquid substance amount in saidsecond tank unit 250, providing liquid substance to said second tank unit 250 from said first tank unit 220.
Figure 3a schematically illustrates a flow chart of a method for provision of a liquidsubstance for an internal combustion engine configuration 299, said engine configuration299 comprising a first tank unit 220 for holding said liquid substance and a second tank unit250 for holding said liquid substance, a first pump unit 230 for providing liquid substancefrom said first tank unit 220 to said second tank unit 250, a second pump unit 270 forproviding liquid substance from said second tank unit 250 for consumption within saidengine configuration 299. The method comprises a first method step s301. The method step s301 comprises the steps of: - continuously determining a mass flow m2 of said liquid substance taken from said secondtank unit 250 for consumption within said engine configuration 299; - continuously determining a prevailing remaining amount of said liquid substance in said second tank unit 250 based on said determined mass flow m2; and - according to predetermined criteria relating to the prevailing remaining amount of saidliquid substance in said second tank unit 250, providing liquid substance to said second tank unit 250 from said first tank unit 220.
After the method step s301 the method ends/is returned.
Figure 3b schematically i||ustrates a flow chart of a method for provision of a liquidsubstance for an internal combustion engine configuration 299, said engine configuration299 comprising a first tank unit 220 for holding said liquid substance and a second tank unit250 for holding said liquid substance, a first pump unit 230 for providing liquid substancefrom said first tank unit 220 to said second tank unit250, a second pump unit 270 forproviding liquid substance from said second tank unit 250 for consumption within said engine configuration 299. The method comprises a first method step s310.
The method step s310 comprises the step of supplying fuel substance to said second tankunit 250 from said first tank unit 220 by means of said first pump unit 230. Hereby operationof said first pump unit 230 is controlled by said first control unit 200. The provision of saidfuel substance to said second tank 250 unit may be controlled in a number of different ways by means of said first pump unit 230 and said first control unit 200.
According to a first example said first pump unit 230 is controlled to operate during apredetermined time period, e.g. 2 minutes, at a certain pump rate/rpm. By pumping saidfuel substance to said second fuel tank 250 accordingly it is ensured that said second fuel tank 250 is substantially filled or completely filled.
According to a second example said first pump unit 230 is controlled to operate, i.e.providing said fuel substance to said second tank unit 250, until it is determined that saidsecond tank unit 250 is completely filled. One way of determining that said second tank unit250 is substantially filled or completely filled may be performed by means of a mass flowsensor provided at said second return passage P251. Whenever said second leak flowmZZeak is detected, it may be determined that said second fuel tank 250 is substantially fullor completely full. Another way of determining that said second tank unit 250 is substantially filled or completely filled may be performed by means of said level sensor 235. lf said first 16 pump unit 230 is Operating and thus is providing said fuel substance to said second tank unit250 and a fuel level L1 is substantially constant, this may be taken as an indication of thatsaid second fuel tank 250 is substantially filled or completely filled (mZZeak is equal to said first mass flow value m1).
According to a third example said first pump unit 230 is controlled to operate, i.e. providingsaid fuel substance to said second tank unit 250, until it is determined that said second tankunit 250 is substantially filled or completely filled. Hereby said first pump unit 230 iscontrolled to provide a certain predetermined volume of said fuel substance to said secondtank unit 250. Hereby said first mass flow sensor unit 235 is continuously detecting a fuelsubstance mass flow value m1 and when it is determined that said predetermined volumehas been supplied it is determined that said second tank unit 250 is substantially filled or completely filled.
According to a fourth example said first pump unit 230 is controlled to operate, i.e. providingsaid fuel substance to said second tank unit 250, until it is determined that said second tankunit 250 is filled to a certain predetermined level L2. Said predetermined level L2 may be anysuitable level, e.g. corresponding to 25%, 50%, 75% or 100% ofthe total volume of the second tank unit 250.
After the step s310 a subsequent step s320 is performed.
The method step s320 comprises the step of continuously determining a mass flow m2 ofsaid liquid substance taken from said second tank unit 250 for consumption within saidengine configuration 299. This may be performed by means of said first control unit 200.Hereby it may continuously be determined the amount of fuel which is consumed by theengine of the combustion engine configuration 299. Alternatively, in case said liquidsubstance comprises a reducing agent for emission control and said engine configurationrefers to an emission pipe system, it may continuously be determined the amount of reducing agent which is provided to said emission pipe system. 17 The method step s320 may comprise the step of continuously determining a consumedamount Vc of said liquid Substance provided in accordance with the control unit 200 foroperating said engine configuration 299. This may be performed by continuouslydetermining said mass flow m2 by means of said second mass flow sensor unit 285 orcontinuously determining a consumed amount Vc of said liquid substance on the basis ofoperation of said second pump unit 270. By continuously determining an amount of returnliquid substance not included in said consumption but provided back to said second tank unit250, i.e. by the mass flow in said return passage P291, said consumed amount Vc of saidliquid substance may be determined accordingly. The method step s320 may also comprisethe step of determining a prevailing remaining amount of liquid substance in said second tank unit 250 based on the determined mass flow m2.
After the method step s320 a subsequent method step s330 is performed.
The method step s330 comprises the step of determining if said determined consumedamount Vc of said liquid substance is larger than a predetermined threshold value TH. This iscomparable with determining if the determined prevailing volume of said liquid substancestored in said second tank unit 250 is below a certain predetermined volume/level. Saidpredetermined volume/level may be e.g. 25% of the total volume of the second tank unit 250. Said predetermined threshold value TH is set accordingly. lf said determined consumed amount Vc of said liquid substance is larger than apredetermined threshold value TH (namely YES), i.e. that the determined prevailing volumeof said liquid substance in said second tank unit 250 is below said predetermined volume/level, a subsequent method step s340 is performed. lf said determined consumed amount Vc of said liquid substance is not larger than apredetermined threshold value TH (namely NO), i.e. that the determined prevailing volumeof said liquid substance in said second tank unit 250 is larger/above said predetermined volume/level, said method step s320 is performed. 18 The method step s340 may comprise the step of supplying fuel Substance to said secondtank unit 250 from said first tank unit 220 by means of said first pump unit 230. Herebyoperation of said first pump unit 230 is controlled by said first control unit 200. The provisionof said fuel substance to said second tank 250 unit may be controlled in a number ofdifferent ways by means of said first pump unit 230 and said first control unit 200. Saidsecond tank unit 250 may be supplied in accordance with any ofthe alternatives depictedwith reference to the method step s310, e.g. by filling said second tank unit 250 substantially completely or to a predetermined volume/level.
According to one example the method step s340 comprises the step of: when, according tosaid predetermined criteria, liquid substance to said second tank unit 250 from said first tankunit 220 is provided to said second tank unit 250, filling said second tank unit 250 to a predetermined extent.
