Abstract
Description
The invention relates to laser technology, namely to non-heated cathodes for active elements (AE) of a pulsed metal vapor laser. The proposed cathode is durable, does not complicate the design and maintains high stability of laser radiation parameters.
Non-heated cathode of an AE pulsed metal vapor laser. works in difficult and not quite usual conditions for gas-discharge devices:
- высокое давление (до атмосферного) в АЭ буферного газа,- high pressure (up to atmospheric) in the buffer gas AE,
- высокая частота повторения импульсов в режиме импульсного дугового разряда, - high pulse repetition rate in pulsed arc discharge mode,
- импульсы тока с амплитудой сотни ампер,- current pulses with an amplitude of hundreds of amperes,
3-4].The design of a non-heated cathode in industrial sealed self-heating metal vapor laser AEs is known and adopted as a prototype [Grigoryants A. G., Kazaryan M. A., Lyabin N. A. Laser precision microprocessing of materials. – M.: FIZMATLIT, 2017. – Ch. 3 p.111 Fig.3.13,3.14; p.133 Table 3-3; p.144 Table 3-4].
The active element is filled with a buffer gas of neon mixed with hydrogen. The combustion of a high-voltage pulsed arc discharge is localized at the cathode into a small spot. The cathode is heated to a high temperature due to ion bombardment. The cathode is made in the form of a metal-porous tungsten-barium ring installed in a molybdenum cylindrical holder; in the center of the inner surface of the ring there is a longitudinal (circular) groove 0.5-1 mm wide and up to 3 mm deep. A high-intensity electric field is created in the annular groove, ensuring more efficient operation of the cathode in the field emission mode. The combustion spot is localized in the groove, heating an area with a diameter up to three times the width of the groove. Increasing the operating pressure of neon in the active element from 200 mm Hg. Art. to atmospheric leads to a change in spot size from approximately 1 to 0.5 mm due to discharge compression. At the same time, in a localized spot and in the thermally affected zone of the cathode, high temperatures close to the melting of tungsten are reached, as a result of which the cathode switches to a stable mode of operation of thermionic emission, providing stable parameters of laser radiation. During operation, as the barium in the active substance is depleted, the cathode spot gradually moves along the perimeter of the groove, maintaining stable parameters.
The disadvantage of the design is the limited working length of the longitudinal (circular) groove, which reduces the durability of the cathode.
The technical result is to increase the durability of the non-heated cathode of an AE metal vapor laser while maintaining high stability of laser radiation parameters.
The technical result is achieved by the fact that the non-heated cathode for the active element of a metal vapor laser is made in the form of a metal-porous tungsten-barium ring installed in a molybdenum cylindrical holder; in the center of the inner surface of the ring there is a longitudinal groove up to one mm wide and up to three mm deep. On the inner surface of the ring there are additional transverse grooves in increments of up to three mm, with the width and depth of each groove being the same as a longitudinal groove.
Performing transverse grooves increases the total working length, which increases the durability of the non-heated cathode while maintaining the stability of the laser radiation parameters of an AE metal vapor laser.

Ring 1 with overall dimensions Ø32* Ø24*3.5 mm, installed in a molybdenum cylindrical holder 2 with overall dimensions Ø32.8* 21.2 mm. In the center of the ring on the inner surface there is a longitudinal (circular) groove 3 with an outer diameter of Ø24 mm, a width of 1 mm and a depth of 2 mm. Additionally, on the inner surface of the cathode, there are 24 uniform transverse grooves 4 with a pitch of 3 mm, the width and depth of each groove being the same as a longitudinal (circular) one. The annular and transverse grooves in the cathode structure are made using machining equipment. The total working length of the grooves has increased to 135 mm.
The proposed heatless cathode for an AE metal vapor laser operates as follows.
When a high-voltage pulse voltage is applied to the electrodes of an AE metal vapor laser filled with a buffer gas, a pulsed arc discharge ignites, which is localized during heating on a non-heated cathode into a spot of ~1 mm in size in one of the grooves , . A high-intensity electric field is created in this groove, ensuring efficient operation of the cathode in the field emission mode. The spot size is determined by the gas pressure and is consistent with the width of the groove. Thanks to intense ion bombardment at a high pulse repetition rate, the cathode material in the spot and the surrounding area with a diameter of up to ~3 mm is heated to a high temperature, ensuring stable operation in the thermionic emission mode and, accordingly, stable parameters of laser radiation. The heating area of the cathode is clearly observed by its bright glow using an optical pyrometer and is determined by traces of material erosion. The cathode spot, in the process of depletion of the active substance in the area of its heating, moves along all the grooves.
The effectiveness of the invention was tested experimentally using the example of an industrial sealed self-heating AE copper vapor laser GL-205A [KRPG.433757.001-003 TU]. The pressure of the neon buffer gas mixed with hydrogen was 250 mm Hg. Art., pulse repetition frequency 12 kHz. The design of the non-heated cathode ensured stable laser radiation parameters. The total working length of the longitudinal and transverse grooves increased by 1.7 times - up to 135 mm, which corresponds to an increase in the durability of the non-heated cathode from 6,000 to 10,000 hours.
The tests were carried out as part of an existing training and testing stand for an AE copper vapor laser. The proposed cathode with additional transverse grooves can operate up to 10,000 hours, i.e. 1.7 times longer than the analogue, as follows from the analysis of erosion traces after disassembling the AE.
The design of the proposed heatless cathode can be applicable to other metal vapor lasers operating in the high-frequency pulsed arc discharge mode: manganese, gold, barium.
