Abstract
Description
The invention relates to electronic equipment, in particular, to the creation of cathode-grid units with field emission cathodes for vacuum electronic devices, including powerful microwave devices with microsecond readiness.
А. A Thin - Film Field - Emission Cathode // Journal of Applied Physics. 1968, Vol.39, No 7, PP. 3504-3505]. A known design of the cathode-grid unit (KSU), consisting of many field emission cells, each of which includes a field emission emitter in the form of a straight cone with a height of up to 1.5 μm with a radius of curvature of the vertex equal to several tens of nanometers, and a control grid with a hole with a diameter of up to 1.5 μm, separated from the cathode by a dielectric film [Spindt S.A. A Thin - Film Field - Emission Cathode // Journal of Applied Physics. 1968, Vol. 39, No. 7, PP. 3504-3505]. The disadvantage of this design is the heterogeneity of emission in the cells, which is associated with a spread in the sizes of cone-shaped emitters and holes in the grid electrode. The size spread is due to the manufacturing processes of both auto emitters and holes in the grid electrode. It is known that a change in the radius of curvature of the top of the emitter leads to a change in the electric field at the surface of the vertices of the emitters and, as a consequence, to a change in the current of field emission by exponential [Bondarenko B.V. Problems of stability of field emission and some ways to solve it // Electronic Engineering. Ser. Microwave Electronics. 1980. Issue. 9 (321). C.3-8]. A significant difference in the currents in the cells during intensive current extraction from the cathode matrix leads to an excess of the emission current in individual cells over the maximum permissible value and, as a result, thermal destruction of the emitters by the Joule heat and failure of the entire cathode matrix.
Known design KSU, consisting of many field emission cells and a grid electrode placed directly on the cathode matrix [Patent No. 2589722 of the Russian Federation, IPC
[Vasily I. Shesterkin. Large-sized field-emission cells with high aspect ratio of tip sizes made of carbon glass composed of electron guns for microwave devices // 11th International Vacuum Electron Sources Conference. IVESC 2016. Seoul. 18-20 October. 2016. PP. 119-120]. The closest technical solution is the design of the cathode-grid unit containing a field-emission cathode in the form of a needle with a large aspect ratio (over 1000) and a grid with a circular hole separated from the cathode by a vacuum gap [Vasily I. Shesterkin. Large-sized field-emission cells with high aspect ratio of tip sizes made of carbon glass composed of electron guns for microwave devices // 11 th International Vacuum Electron Sources Conference. IVESC 2016. Seoul. October 18-20. 2016. PP. 119-120]. The height of the needle can reach 1.5 mm. The emission current from one needle is 8 ÷ 14 mA with a radius of curvature of the apex of 0.5 ÷ 5.0 μm, a hole diameter in the grid of up to 500 μm and a voltage on the control grid of 2000-2500 V. The advantage of this design is the simplicity and manufacturability.
С. 161-165].However, with an increase in the number of field emission cells in the KSU, the requirements for the accuracy of their manufacture increase to ensure the identity of the electric field strengths at the tops of the field emitters, which is achieved by the identity of the sizes of the cell elements. Existing technologies for the manufacture and assembly of KSUs with many field emission cells do not provide the necessary identical cell sizes and do not allow obtaining the same emission currents from each cell at the same voltage across the control grid. So, for example, in a KSU with seven cells, the total current of the cathode was approximately the same as the current of a single cell [V. Shesterkin. Field emission cells with a dielectric gap cathode - grid and prospects for their use in electronic devices // Actual problems of electronic instrumentation: materials Intern. scientific and technical conf. APEP - 2016. September 22-23, 2016 SSTU. Saratov. Russia. S. 161-165].
The technical result of the claimed invention is to increase the uniformity of the current collection from the cells of the field emission cathode.
This is achieved by the fact that the cathode-grid unit with a plurality of field emission cells contains an arbitrary cathode on which field emitters are formed in any known manner, and a grid electrode with holes that form field emission cells together with field emitters. The grid electrode is separated from the cathode by a vacuum gap or an insulating substrate, or placed directly on the surface of the cathode. In this case, the grid electrode consists of a dielectric film that acts as the supporting structure of the grid electrode, a conductive film formed on one side of the dielectric film and which is the control grid, or a conductive film, which is the control grid, and a conductive film, which is the focusing grid, moreover, the control and conductive films are formed on opposite sides of the dielectric film. The control grid is divided into electrically isolated from each other, covering each hole or group of holes in the grid electrode elements that have electrical leads for supplying them with different potentials.
Due to the possibility of separate regulation of potentials on the grid elements, it is possible to obtain equal currents from each field emission cell or group of cells.

The cathode-grid unit (Fig. 1 - Fig. 3) contains a cathode (1) of a cylindrical, strip or any other shape on which autoemitters (2) are formed in any known way, a grid electrode (3) with holes (7) forming together with emitters, field emission cells, the grid electrode being separated from the cathode by a vacuum gap or an insulating substrate (8), or placed directly on the cathode surface and consists of a dielectric film (5) that performs the functions of the supporting structure of the grid electrode; conductive film (6) formed on one side of the dielectric film and which is the control grid of the grid electrode, or conductive film (6), which is the control grid of the grid electrode, and conductive film (4), which is the focusing grid of the grid electrode, and film (6) and (4) formed on opposite sides of the dielectric film. The control grid of the grid electrode, which controls the current of emitters, is divided into elements (6) covering each individual hole (7) or groups of holes in the grid electrode and having elements (6) electrically isolated from each other for supplying different, if necessary, potentials.
The device operates as follows: for each element of the control grid, if necessary, a different voltage U n is higher than the cathode potential necessary to obtain the field emission current of a cell or group of cells equal to I / n, where: I is the total field emission current of the CSU; n is the number of cells or groups of cells in the KSU. To change the total field emission current of the cathode, a proportional increase or decrease in the voltage U n on the elements of the control grid is required. A potential equal or close to the cathode potential, or any other potential necessary to form a minimum angle of divergence of the electron beam at the exit from the cells, is supplied to the focusing grid (if any). The design of the KSU with a divided control grid into electrically isolated elements with corresponding potentials for each field emission cell or for groups of field emission cells allows one to ensure the same current for all field emission cells or groups of field emission cells and to avoid current overload of any field emission cell or group of field emission cells, which is a necessary condition for increasing the field emission current of the cathode and improving the reliability parameters of the KSU.
