Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a technology for manufacturing cold cathodes of helium-neon lasers and can be used in gas discharge technology.
One of the important problems arising in the manufacture of cold cathodes of helium-neon lasers is the need to ensure their stable operation for more than 50 thousand hours. This is achieved, in particular, by creating a protective oxide coating on the surface of the cold cathode of the active laser element. Such a coating should, in turn, have a high secondary emission ability and uniformity of electrophysical properties.
- Т. 1-2).There are various methods of applying oxide coatings by vacuum evaporation of the corresponding materials (Technology of thin films. Handbook edited by L. Meissel, R. Glanga. - M .: Soviet Radio, 1977. - T. 1-2).
However, the use of these methods is difficult when forming oxide coatings on products of complex shape with an extended internal working surface.
6. - 1973. 12. - С. 3-10).A known method of forming oxide coatings on the surface of cold cathodes of aluminum and its alloys in a glow discharge plasma (Trofimov E.A. et al. Obtaining protective oxide films on hollow cathodes in a glow discharge of oxygen. - Electronic technology. Ser. 6. Materials. - 1973 . - Issue 12. - S. 3-10).
However, the use of this method in the manufacture of cylindrical cathodes is difficult. This circumstance is connected, firstly, with the peculiarities of the current distribution over the cathode surface. These distributions, controlled in the discharge of inert gases and in mixtures containing oxygen, differ significantly. In this case, the maximally oxidized sections of the cathode do not coincide with the zones of the highest current load in the active elements of the lasers.
Secondly, oxide coatings obtained in the cathodic oxidation mode have a high defect caused by spraying of potentially “weak” sections of the formed coatings.
The closest method of the same purpose to the claimed object by the totality of features is a method of manufacturing a cold cathode of a helium-neon laser, comprising heating the cathode blank from aluminum in vacuum not lower than 5 · 10 -5 mm RT. Art. and subsequent thermal oxidation of its surface (Kiseleva LI, Kosenkova O.Ya., Kryutchenko ON, etc. A method for manufacturing the active element of a gas laser with a cold cathode. - RF Patent No. 20132943, 1994 - prototype).
For reasons that impede the achievement of the required technical result when using the known method adopted as a prototype, it does not ensure the complete exclusion of defects in oxide coatings in the form of through pores formed on various metal substrates, for example, on the surface of chemically pure aluminum.
The appearance of through pores is associated with structural and phase inhomogeneities of the surface of the cathode material. In a gas discharge, through pores, due to the charging of the surface of the oxide coating, turn into electrostatic microlenses that focus the ion flux. As a result, the pore area is subjected to enhanced atomization, which limits the life of the cathodes.
The objective of the invention is to increase the service life of the cold cathode of a helium-neon laser.
This technical result is achieved during the implementation of the invention by the fact that in the known method of manufacturing a cold cathode of a helium-neon laser, which includes heating the cathode blanks from aluminum in vacuum at least 5 · 10 -5 mm RT.article and subsequent thermal oxidation of its surface, a cathode blank of chemically pure aluminum is heated in oxygen at a rate of 200 ° C / hour to a temperature of 300-350 ° C, kept at this temperature for 1.5 hours and then cooled to room temperature with same speed.
The above technical result is achieved by choosing the optimal regime of thermal oxidation of the surface of the cathode blanks of chemically pure aluminum, which is realized when they are heated at a rate of 200 ° C / h until a maximum temperature of 300-350 ° C is reached. In this case, an acceptable thickness of the oxide coating is provided with the smallest possible number of through pores.
The positive effect of the use of the invention is due to an increase in the durability of the cold cathode made of chemically pure aluminum due to the production of a low-defective oxide coating on its surface with stable secondary emission properties.
Thus, a comparative analysis of the proposed technical solution and the prior art allowed us to establish that the claimed invention meets the requirement of "novelty" and "inventive step" under the current law.
The proposed method of manufacturing a cold helium-neon laser cathode is illustrated in FIG. 1, which shows the dependence of the average porosity (curve 1) and thickness (curve 2) of oxide coatings obtained on the surface of cathode blanks of chemically pure aluminum on the maximum oxidation temperature.
The method is implemented as follows. A cathode blank of the required shape is made of chemically pure aluminum (for example, grade A99), it is subjected to chemical treatment to remove residual oils and the upper broken layer. Then the cathode blank is placed in a special glass flask having an insulated anode electrode, which is pumped out to a vacuum no worse than 5 · 10 -5 mm RT. Art., heated to a temperature of 350-400 ° C and maintained at this temperature for 1.0-2.0 hours. After that, the flask is cooled to room temperature, oxygen is introduced into it to a pressure of 2-3 mm Hg. Art. and heated at a rate of 200 ° C / hr to a temperature of 300-350 ° C, kept the flask at this temperature for 1.5 hours and then cooled to room temperature at the same speed.
Then the flask is filled with neon to a pressure of 3.0 mm. Hg. Art. and igniting a glow discharge between the fabricated cathode and the anode. The quality of the fabricated oxide coatings of the cathodes is evaluated by the level of the voltage to maintain the discharge.
The dependence of the total porosity of oxide coatings formed on the surface of A99 aluminum cathodes on the oxidation temperature is shown in FIG. 1. Her analysis shows that the cathode oxidation carried out by the proposed method provides the minimum porosity of the coatings with their thickness equal to 20-25 nm. This circumstance contributes to an increase in the stability of the surface of cold cathodes in a gas discharge (the through pore is a section of the cathode subjected to selective amplified ion bombardment).
The observed positive effect is associated with the features of thermal oxidation of aluminum cathodes of grade A99. At an oxidation temperature lower than 300 ° C, the coating thickness does not exceed 20.0 nm, which limits the durability of the cathode. At temperatures exceeding 350 ° C, a sharp increase in the porosity of the coatings is observed. This circumstance is due to cracking of the coatings due to their partial crystallization. The exposure of the cathode blanks at a maximum temperature of 1.5 hours. A further increase in this time does not lead to an additional increase in the thickness of the coatings and is therefore impractical.
Maintaining a heating rate of cathode blanks of less than 200 ° C / hr leads to an increase in the process time. An increase in the heating rate of billets in the range from 210 to 250 ° C / h is accompanied by an additional increase in the porosity of coatings by 3-10% due to internal stresses arising in them.
45-50%.Direct tests of the proposed cold cathodes made of chemically pure aluminum in the active elements of helium-neon lasers showed an increase in the time of their stable operation by 45-50%.
