Abstract
Description
Transparent ceramic based on aluminum-magnesium spinel is widely used in engineering due to its high strength, wear and chemical resistance, as well as transmission in a wide range of electromagnetic radiation (from near UV to mid IR). The high cost of spinel is largely related to the difficulties in obtaining highly pure initial nanosized powders of spinel stoichiometric composition.
07.12.1985.Typically, the starting powders are obtained by thermal decomposition of mixtures of chlorides or nitrates of magnesium and aluminum or their aerosols at 1150-1300 ° C, for example, as described in the USSR AS No. 1196333, IPC C01F 7/16, publ. 12/07/1985.
The significant disadvantages of this method of obtaining the initial spinel powders, which lead to a rise in the cost of the final product, are as follows:
- необходима предварительная очистка солей металлов, например, дробной кристаллизацией;- preliminary cleaning of metal salts is necessary, for example, fractional crystallization;
- необходимо специальное оборудование, устойчивое при высокой температуре к агрессивным газам (HCl, Cl2, NO2), образующимся при термическом разложении солей;- special equipment is necessary that is stable at high temperature to aggressive gases (HCl, Cl 2 , NO 2 ) formed during the thermal decomposition of salts;
- необходимо оборудование для улавливания токсичных отходящих газов;- equipment is required for the capture of toxic exhaust gases;
- определенные трудности в получении порошков шпинели необходимого макросостава, связанные с различным содержанием воды в кристаллогидратах исходных солей.- certain difficulties in obtaining spinel powders of the necessary macro composition, associated with different water contents in the crystalline hydrates of the starting salts.
To eliminate most of the above disadvantages, a method has been developed for the preparation of starting spinel powders based on mixtures of magnesium and aluminum alkoxides [see US patent No. 4584151, 1986]. Alkoxides of these metals are hydrolyzed by air moisture to form hydroxides, therefore, high temperatures are not required to obtain spinel powders, and there are no aggressive toxic gases in the production of such powders.
A significant drawback of this method, in addition to the relatively high price of the starting alkoxides and the need to use high-purity magnesium, is that in industrial conditions it is almost impossible to implement the requirements for the molar ratio of Al 2 O 3 : MgO in the synthesized powders, which are regulated within fairly strict limits (from 0.502: 0.498 to 0.524: 0.476 - see this patent). This is due to the fact that the initial alkoxides are easily hydrolyzed and change their mass depending on the temperature and humidity of the surrounding air. In addition, the authors of this patent to reduce the volatility of magnesium oxide during sintering of powders, as well as to increase the speed of sintering, lithium fluoride additives in the amount of 0.05-0.15 mass were introduced into the mixture of Al and Mg hydroxides. % However, the presence of a metal fluoride phase, which is concentrated along grain boundaries, reduces both the strength and transparency of the resulting ceramics.
Known class of bimetallic metal alkoxides [Penkos R. Advances in chemistry. T. 37. - 1968, No. 4, p. 647-653], of which double magnesium-aluminum isopropylate is most preferred. This compound contains magnesium and aluminum in the ratio 1: 2 necessary to obtain spinel, has a high volatility and can be subjected to deep purification by vacuum distillation.
The above compound was used to obtain a transparent aluminum-magnesium ceramic in the patent of the Russian Federation No. 2035434, IPC C04B 35/443, publ. 05/20/1995. This technical solution is the closest to the proposed method for producing aluminum-magnesium spinel. According to the prototype, a solution of the initial double magnesium-aluminum isopropylate with a magnesium content of 13.4-14.2 at. %, aluminum 28.2-29.0 at. % is treated in an oxygen atmosphere at 600-800 ° C and hot pressing the resulting powder at 1250-1300 ° C in vacuum. High quality transparent ceramics is claimed. The description does not indicate the conditions for the production of spinel powder from double magnesium-aluminum isopropylate. It can be assumed that a solution of double magnesium-aluminum isopropylate is sprayed and burned in an oxygen atmosphere, and the powder is trapped on graphite fabric. The conditions for separating large particles of spinel from the bulk of the nanodispersed powder, or the conditions for preliminary grinding of the powder, are also not indicated.
The main disadvantage of the described technical solution is that the method requires the use of non-standard equipment - a magnesium-aluminum isopropylate combustion unit, which determines powder characteristics that are extremely sensitive to minor changes in process parameters (pressure, flows, temperatures, concentrations, reactor geometry, etc.) , which ultimately leads to a high percentage of marriage.
The objective of the new invention is to simplify spinel technology and increase its reproducibility through the use of standard industrial equipment designed for the production of functional ceramics, through an optimal process.
1700-1900°C.The problem is solved by a method for producing a transparent aluminum-magnesium spinel, including obtaining the initial spinel powder from solutions of double magnesium-aluminum isopropylate and hot pressing the spinel powder, in which, in contrast to the prototype, the initial spinel powder is obtained by the hydrolysis of double magnesium-aluminum isopropylate and an isopropyl alcohol-azeotropic mixture water at a temperature not exceeding 100 ° C with a ratio of double magnesium-aluminum isopropylate: water 1: 8, the resulting powder in the form of magnesium-aluminum hydroxide is subjected rokalivaniyu at 1100-1200 ° C to yield the spinel powder, followed by hot pressing at 1400-1500 ° C and gasostatic pressed at 1700-1900 ° C.
2.Unlike the prototype, the hydrolysis reaction is carried out in standard capacitive equipment. The obtained powder of magnesium-aluminum hydroxides is calcined at 1100-1200 ° C in a corundum crucible in a muffle furnace, then subjected to hot pressing at a temperature of 1400-1500 ° C in vacuum. The pressure on the powder in the vertical direction during the pressing process is in the range of 1.5-2 tf / cm 2 .
After uniaxial hot pressing, a ceramic spinel with a low transparency in the visible and IR spectral ranges was obtained. To increase the optical quality, ceramic spinel was treated by gas-static pressing at a temperature of 1700-1900 ° C and an inert gas pressure of 1.5-2 tf / cm 2 . Pressing was carried out at a given temperature for 2-5 hours, after which the installation was slowly cooled to room temperature. Gasostatic pressing resulted in highly transparent ceramics.
All modes are selected empirically, in which the required technical result is obtained.
Concrete example
2.550 g of double magnesium-aluminum isopropylate are placed in a 3.0 liter plastic or stainless steel reactor equipped with a stirrer, a water-heated jacket and a direct refrigerator for distilling off isopropyl alcohol. Then, 1200 ml of an azeotropic mixture of isopropyl alcohol 87.7% vol. Are added to the reactor at a speed of 100-200 ml / min. - water 12.3% vol., providing a ratio of double magnesium-aluminum isopropylate: water 1: 8. The temperature of the suspension of metal hydroxides in isopropyl alcohol rises to 80 ° C. Then the temperature of the shirt is raised to 90 ° C and isopropyl alcohol is distilled off, which is further used to obtain the next batch of double magnesium-aluminum isopropylate. The obtained dry hydroxide powder is heated at a speed of 5-20 ° C / min to 1100 ° C and maintained at this temperature for 2 hours, as a result of which metal hydroxides are converted into nanodispersed powder of aluminum-magnesium spinel weighing 142 g with the necessary granulometric properties to obtain a transparent ceramic. Then the powder is subjected to hot pressing in vacuum at a temperature of 1450 ° C and a pressure of 2 tf / cm 2 , followed by isostatic treatment at a temperature of 1900 ° C and a pressure of 2 tf / cm 2 .
Get transparent ceramics with the following optical and mechanical properties: refractive index 1.715; transmittance (thickness 1.7 mm) for λ = 0.4 μm 48%, λ = 0.7 μm 58%, λ = 4.0 μm 82%; bending strength 280 MPa; crack resistance - 2.0 MPa / m.
The table shows the limits of the ratio of water from an azeotropic mixture of isopropyl alcohol - water with double magnesium-aluminum isopropylate (1: 8 is the stoichiometric amount of water required for complete hydrolysis, 1: 4 is the lack of water for complete hydrolysis, 1:12 is excess water) , temperature and time of heat treatment of metal hydroxides, leading to the production of MgAl 2 O 4 powders of the required particle size distribution, confirmed by measurements of the specific surface area of the powder and the transparency of the ceramics after sintering, hot pres temperature poking and gas-static pressing.
Sample thickness 1 mm
The heating rate has virtually no effect; a heating rate of <5 ° C / min increases the heating time; a speed of> 20 ° C / min necessitates the use of more powerful furnaces.
The temperature of gas-static pressing above 1900 ° C was not used due to the significant increase in the cost of the processing process at high temperatures and the inaccessibility of large-sized gas-static equipment with the corresponding characteristics.
Thus, the proposed method for producing nanodispersed powders of spinel and transparent ceramics based on them allows to reduce the cost of the final product, as well as to simplify the technology of obtaining the initial powder of aluminum-magnesium spinel, because:
- процесс гидролиза при низких температурах (менее 100°C) не требует специального оборудования, порошки и керамика из них получаются со 100% воспроизводимостью (по прототипу используется специальное оборудование для сжигания при температуре 600°С и для улавливания порошка);- the hydrolysis process at low temperatures (less than 100 ° C) does not require special equipment, powders and ceramics from them are obtained with 100% reproducibility (the prototype uses special equipment for burning at a temperature of 600 ° C and for collecting powder);
- получение порошка шпинели с необходимыми гранулометрическими свойствами осуществляется при более высокой температуре (по прототипу 700°C), но время получения значительно меньше - 2 часа (по прототипу 24 ч).- the production of spinel powder with the necessary particle size distribution is carried out at a higher temperature (according to the prototype 700 ° C), but the production time is much less than 2 hours (according to the prototype 24 hours).
