Abstract
Description
The invention relates to the field of inorganic chemistry, in particular highly porous ceramic materials that can be used as carriers of catalysts, filters, materials for electronics.
Silicon carbide has many important functional properties. It has a high melting point, is chemically resistant to most aggressive substances, and is stable in air at high temperatures. The features of its crystalline structure make it possible to create semiconductor and optoelectronic devices on its basis. Silicon carbide ceramics and composites are effectively used as high-temperature heaters, refractories, and friction pairs in bearings.
Silicon carbide in the form of a powder is obtained mainly by the interaction of particles of silicon oxide with carbon (coke) at high temperatures. Silicon carbide ceramics are made by sintering silicon carbide powder with various additives.
In addition, silicon carbide can be obtained by the interaction of carbon with silicon. For example, a known method for producing silicon carbide [US Patent No. 6554897, cl. C30B 23/00, 2003]. The method consists in high-temperature processing of a preform composed of carbon and silicon. Moreover, part of the preform is made by pressing of carbon particles in the form of the desired product, and silicon is located on the surface of carbon. During high-temperature processing (1500-2000 ° С), silicon vapors penetrate into the pores of the carbon preform, enter into a chemical reaction and convert carbon to silicon carbide. As carbon, it is preferable to use carbon obtained from lignin or anthracite.
The disadvantages of this method are its technological complexity associated with high temperatures of the process, and its long duration.
1:2.The closest to the claimed technical solution, the authors consider the method of producing silicon carbide described in US patent No. 4117096 [class. C30B 30/00, 1978]. The method consists in mixing silicon powder with carbon powder, molding a workpiece from a mixture of powders and subsequent heat treatment at a temperature of 800-1400 ° C. Heat treatment is carried out in an oxygen-containing medium (0.3-35% vol. Oxygen). As carbon, graphite, coke, soot with a particle size of less than 20 microns are used. The particle size of silicon is less than 200 microns. The molar ratio of carbon: silicon is from 1: 0.6 to 1: 2.
The disadvantage of this method is that the method does not provide a compact material (in the form of products having the necessary strength), but allows you to get only powders of silicon carbide. Obtained after heat treatment of the workpiece is easily destroyed into individual particles of silicon carbide, the size of which is up to 500 microns.
Zhicheng Lui et.al. Low-temperature formation of nanocrystalline SiC with high surface area and mesoporosity via reaction of mesoporous carbon and silicon powder (Mesoporous and Microporous Materials, 2005, v.82, pp.137-145). A known method for producing porous nanostructured silicon carbide described in the article by Zhicheng Lui et.al. Low temperature formation of nanocrystalline SiC with high surface area and mesoporosity via reaction of mesoporous carbon and silicon powder (Mesoporous and Microporous Materials, 2005, v. 82, pp. 137-145). The method consists in mixing silicon powder with a mesoporous carbon material and subsequent heat treatment of the powder mixture at a temperature of 1200-1300 ° C. The result is porous silicon carbide in the form of granules with a pore size of 5-40 nm and a specific surface area of 147 m 2 / g.
The disadvantage of this method is the inability to manufacture the product of the required size and shape - the product of the method are porous granules.
The objective of the invention is to obtain silicon carbide in the form of a porous body (product) having a strength of more than 5 MPa. The problem has been solved by using silicon powder and detonation synthesis diamond powder as starting materials. When implementing the method, the powders are mixed in a mass ratio of silicon: diamond from 2: 1 to 2.4: 1. Then, from the mixture of powders, the preform of the desired product is formed and the preform is heat treated at a temperature of 1200-1500 ° C.
When using a mixture of silicon and diamond powders with a mass ratio of components of less than 2: 1, the resulting material contains carbon, and with a ratio of more than 2.4: 1, silicon is contained. Both that, and another is undesirable since these components reduce the chemical stability of the material (during oxidation in air and in alkaline environments). The heat treatment at temperatures above 1500 ° C is impractical, because this complicates the production technology. At temperatures below 1200 ° C, the process proceeds very slowly.
The invention consists in the following.
In the proposed technical solution, it is proposed to use detonation synthesis diamond powders as a carbon source for producing silicon carbide. Such powders are obtained by the explosion of explosives. Detonation synthesis diamond powders have a particle size of 4-5 nm. In the course of the studies, it was found that when using detonation synthesis diamond as a carbon source in the process of producing silicon carbide from silicon and carbon, the resulting silicon carbide retains the size and shape of the preformed powder. The resulting material is highly porous - porosity 55-65% vol. The performed structural studies showed that silicon carbide has a nanostructure, the size of the crystalline regions in the material is 10-50 nm.
All these features of the resulting material are determined by the use of diamond detonation synthesis. Diamond has a density of 3.5 g / cm 3 , which is significantly higher than the density of carbon materials previously used to produce silicon carbide (graphite - 2.2 g / cm 3 , soot - 1.6 g / cm 3 ). Therefore, the use of diamond in a mixture with silicon makes it possible to obtain a denser billet, the heat treatment of which leads to the formation of a silicon carbide framework in it, which ensures the strength of the obtained highly porous silicon carbide. In addition, diamond differs from other carbon materials in its chemical activity. Therefore, the process of silicon carbide formation proceeds according to other chemical mechanisms, ensuring the production of precisely nanostructured silicon carbide. The formation of the nanostructure is also determined by the size of the used diamond 4-5 nm.
An example of the implementation of the proposed technical solution. Detonation synthesis diamond (5 g) and polycrystalline silicon powder КР00 with a particle size of 10 μm (10.4 g) are used as starting materials. The mass ratio of the powders is 2.08. Powders are thoroughly mixed. The resulting mixture is molded in a metal mold with a force of 100 MPa to obtain disks with a diameter of 20 mm and a thickness of 1 mm. Disks are placed in a vacuum oven, heated in a vacuum of 0.1 mm RT.article to a temperature of 1400 ° C and maintained at a temperature of 1 minute. After cooling the furnace, samples are removed. Thus, discs are obtained that have retained their size and shape. X-ray diffraction studies showed that the resulting material is silicon carbide. Size of coherent X-ray scattering regions - i.e. the crystallite size of silicon carbide is 25 nm (belongs to the category of nanomaterials). The porosity of the material is 63% vol. The bending strength of the material is 12 MPa. Thus, porous nanostructured silicon carbide was obtained.
Thus, the implementation of the proposed technical solution in comparison with the known method allows to obtain silicon carbide in the form of products having high porosity, sufficient strength and the nanocrystalline structure of silicon carbide formed in them.
