Abstract
Description
The invention relates to the field of electrical engineering, namely to gas diffusion electrodes of fuel cells with a polymer membrane electrolyte.
The solution to the problem of creating highly efficient electrodes for fuel cells with a polymer membrane electrolyte is associated with the solution to the problem of developing effective gas diffusion electrode substrates and active layers. The proposed technical solution for this application relates to the active layer of electrodes.
A technical solution is known (see US Pat. No. 5472799 dated December 5, 1995, N 01 M 8/10, "Fuel cell with a solid polymer electrolyte"), in which an active layer is proposed that is placed between the electrode substrate and the membrane. The active layer consists of carbon-supported catalyst particles and dispersed particles of a polymer ion-conducting electrolyte. The active layer has through pores through which the membrane is moistened.
In such an active layer, the working gases flow almost exclusively to its surface from the side of the electrode substrate, which is the gas diffusion part of the electrodes. The inside of the active layer does not actually work.
J.Eltctrjchem. Soc. Vol. 143 12, December, 1996 г). There is also a method of increasing the performance of fuel cells with a polymer membrane electrolyte and providing self-humidification of the membrane (see J.Eltctrjchem. Soc. Vol. 143 12, December, 1996). The method consists in dispersing in the membrane volume hygroscopic particles of TiO 2 and / or SiO 2 with a size of from 2 to 7 nm and particles of a Pt catalyst with a size of from 1 to 2 nm. The introduction of these components into the membrane structure helps to maintain the moisture content of the membrane, simplifies the water balance maintenance system, ensures the cold start of fuel cells, and also reduces the thickness and, consequently, the cost of the membrane.
However, the separate introduction of particles of Pt and SiO 2 , TiO 2 does not allow the full use of the effect, since these particles, as a rule, are in the membrane in different areas. A more efficiently described mechanism will work if the catalyst particles are in direct contact with hygroscopic particles. In addition, the dispersion process requires sophisticated equipment and expensive technological environments and components, which makes this process very expensive.
The aim of the present invention is to eliminate the above disadvantages, namely, to ensure the operation of the active layer throughout the volume, as well as reduce the cost of the process of creating structures for self-humidification of the membrane and increase their efficiency.
4:6.This goal is achieved by the fact that in the composition of the active layer, whose thickness is about 20 μm, agglomerates of quasi-homogeneously mixed and sintered fluoroplastic particles are introduced. In this case, the concentration of agglomerates in the active layer should be in the range from 0.2 to 0.65 (the concentration increases with increasing operating current density). In addition, the relation C agl / d agl = kx C pke / d pke , where C agl and d agl, respectively, is the concentration and diameter of the agglomerates, and C pke = 1-C agl and d pke, respectively, the concentration and diameter of the spaces filled with particles the catalyst on a carbon carrier and particles of a dispersed polymer ion-conducting electrolyte, k is a coefficient varying from 0.2 to 5. Based on the fact that the characteristic dimensions of the active layer are from 10 to 20 μm, the dimensions d agl and d pke should not exceed 3 microns. This goal is also achieved by the fact that from the side of the polymer membrane electrolyte on the active layer an additional layer is formed containing hygroscopic particles of titanium dioxide and / or silicon or other hygroscopic materials ranging in size from 0.005 microns to 6 microns or fibers with a diameter of not more than 6 microns, on which Pt particles from 1 to 10 nm in size in an amount of from 0.005 to 6 microns are deposited. These particles in an additional layer are mixed with dispersed particles of a polymer ion-conducting electrolyte with a size of from 20 to 70 nm in a ratio of 1: 9 to 4: 6.
The introduction of agglomerates of fluoroplastic particles provides the supply of working gases throughout the volume of the active layer, as a result of which its efficiency increases and the current-voltage characteristics of fuel cells increase. And the introduction of an additional layer significantly reduces the cost of the process of creating structures that provide self-hydration of the membrane, because this eliminates the use of expensive technological environments and components. The additional layer is applied using the same equipment and the same methods as when applying the active layer. In this case, it becomes possible to use thinner and, therefore, cheaper membranes. At the same time, the internal resistance of the membrane-electrode block is reduced.
