Abstract
Description
The invention relates to powder metallurgy, and more specifically relates to methods for producing zirconium ceramics, and can be used in the manufacture of high-strength structural and instrumental materials and products, for example drawing tools.
[1].A known method of producing zirconium ceramics, which consists in the fact that the powder material of partially stabilized zirconia is heated in a thermal furnace first to 1200 o C, and then to 1580 o C in an oxygen atmosphere, resulting in sintering of the powder material [1].
The ceramics obtained in this way have the following mechanical characteristics: density up to 5.5 g / cm 3 and bending strength up to 450 MPa, which is not enough for structural and instrumental ceramics.
In addition, the need for two-stage firing increases the energy intensity of the process and reduces productivity.
[2].A known method of producing zirconium ceramics, which consists in the fact that the powder material zirconia with the addition of 5.5 wt.% Yttrium oxide is sintered in a silica furnace at 1500-1510 o C followed by cooling in liquid nitrogen [2].
The ceramics obtained in this way has a mechanical characteristic - bending strength up to 1280 MPa. In addition, the specified method is characterized by high energy intensity and low manufacturability.
[3]. A known method of producing zirconium ceramics, which consists in the fact that the powder material based on zirconium dioxide is heated to a predetermined temperature and maintained at this temperature for a time sufficient for sintering [3].
0,5.In this way, partially stabilized zirconia is sintered in a thermal furnace in air at a temperature of 1650 ° C and held for 1 hour. The resulting ceramic has a relatively low level of mechanical characteristics: density up to 5.84 g / cm 3 , hardness up to 15 GPa and crack resistance up to 10 MPa m 0.5 .
In addition, the entire technological cycle of obtaining zirconium ceramics takes considerable time and energy-intensive.
The basis of the present invention was the task of developing a method for producing zirconium ceramics, in which heating and exposure of the starting material would meet the conditions of high technology, namely, would take a short time with a relatively low energy consumption and the resulting material would have a high level of mechanical characteristics.
This is achieved by the fact that in the method of producing zirconium ceramics, which consists in the fact that the powder material based on zirconium dioxide is heated to a predetermined temperature and maintained at this temperature for a time sufficient for sintering, according to the invention, the powder material is heated and maintained in a nitrogen-containing plasma gas charge.
The advantages of the proposed method from the known method are that heating and aging are carried out not in thermal furnaces, but in a nitrogen-containing gas discharge plasma. In this case, the material is heated by bombarding nitrogen-containing ions and passing electric current through it. In the process of sintering the material, it is saturated with nitrogen, which changes its chemical composition. As a result, the mechanical characteristics of the obtained ceramics increase with a relatively small technological cycle in time and energy consumption. Compared with the known method, the reduction of time occurs due to the activation of the sintering process due to the flow of electric current through the sample and due to the chemical interaction of the material with nitrogen. The energy intensity is reduced, since in the proposed method the heat release occurs directly on the sintered sample, therefore, the heat loss for heating the installation for the implementation of the method and the environment is minimal.
The invention is further illustrated by the description of specific examples of its implementation.
The proposed method for producing zirconium ceramics is that the zirconia-based powder material is heated to a predetermined temperature and held for a period sufficient for sintering. Heating and aging are carried out in a nitrogen-containing gas discharge plasma.
The essence of the proposed method consists in using an electric field in the working space of the sintering chamber, which is formed due to the application of a potential difference to the anode and cathode, on which a sample is pressed, pressed from a source powder material based on zirconia, for example, pure zirconia, zirconia with oxide additives aluminum, yttrium oxide, magnesium oxide and the like. Ammonia entering the chamber dissociates into nitrogen-containing ions forming a gas discharge. Due to the bombardment of the sample by ions accelerated in an electric field, intense surface heating of the sample occurs. This ensures the appearance of ionic conductivity in the sample material and its heating by volume. The process is controlled by changing the potential difference between the anode and cathode and the pressure in the working space of the chamber. Thus, the principle of obtaining zirconium ceramics in a gas discharge plasma is as follows: at the initial stage, the sample is heated by bombardment with accelerated nitrogen-containing ions, as well as due to heat transfer from other parts of the cathode assembly. After heating the sample to 300-400 o C, the latter becomes conductive (ionic conductivity), an ion current occurs and further heating to the temperature of the isometric holding occurs mainly due to this current.
The following are specific examples of the preparation of zirconium ceramics of the proposed method.
Example 1. A sample pressed from zirconia powder material with the addition of 3 wt.% Yttrium oxide was fixed to the cathode of the sintering chamber. Then a potential difference was applied to the anode and cathode, forming an electric field in the working space of the chamber. At the same time, ammonia entered the chamber, which dissociated into nitrogen-containing ions forming a gas discharge. Due to the bombardment of the sample by ions accelerated in an electric field, intense surface heating of the sample to a temperature of 300-400 o C occurred. This ensured the appearance of ionic conductivity in the sample material and heated it in volume to a temperature of 1450 o C. At this temperature, the sample was kept for 1 h. As a result, sintering of the sample material occurred.
Zirconia ceramics with mechanical characteristics was obtained: density 5.6 g / cm 3 ,
1650oC.Example 2. Zirconia ceramic was obtained in the same way as in example 1, but was kept for 1 h at a temperature of 1650 o C.
The resulting zirconia ceramic had a density of 6.1 g / cm 3 , a density of 19 GPa and a crack resistance of 13 MPa m 0.5 . The technological cycle takes 1.75 hours.
1850oC.Example 3. Zirconia ceramic was obtained in the same manner as in example 1, but was kept for 1 h at a temperature of 1850 o C.
The obtained zirconia ceramics had a density of 5.8 g / cm 3 , a hardness of 19 GPa and a crack resistance of 6 MPa m 0.5 . The technological cycle takes 2 s.
The table below shows the mechanical characteristics of zirconium ceramics obtained by the proposed method and the known method, taken as a prototype.
As can be seen from the table, the ceramic obtained by the proposed method has a higher level of mechanical characteristics compared with the mechanical characteristics of ceramics obtained in a known manner. All this occurs due to the activation of the sintering process during heating by ion bombardment and the passage of electric current through the sample and due to the saturation of the sample material with nitrogen when it is bombarded with charged nitrogen-containing particles, which improves the quality of the sintered material, reduces the energy consumption of sintering and reduces the process time.
