Description
The invention relates to a process for transferring graphene (monolayer or multilayer grown by a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) type process) from a copper substrate directly to another substrate of interest (for example SiO 2 / Si, Au/Cr/Si, glass), to allow further processing to develop different types of applications.
A method for transferring graphene coated with polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is known from patent US8906245 (B2), the transfer of graphene can be performed on a wide variety of substrate surfaces, comprising steps of covering graphene with a layer of PMMA, placing coated graphene with PMMA on a polymer; the deposition of this PMMA-coated graphene polymer is carried out in deionized water.
Also known from patent application US2012298619 (A1) is a method of making a graphene/carbon nanotube composite structure that includes providing a metal substrate including a first surface and a second surface opposite the first surface, growing a graphene film on the first surface of the metal substrate by a CVD method, providing at least one carbon nanotube film structure on the graphene film, coating a polymer layer on the at least one carbon nanotube film structure, and combining the polymer layer with at least a carbon nanotube film structure and graphene film.
Since 2004, when it was possible to isolate graphene with a monoatomic layer thickness, it is known that graphene is a 2D material in the form of flat sheets arranged in a hexagonal honeycomb network, formed by atoms of sp 2 hybridized carbon. Graphene is an allotropic form of carbon, endowed with a unique portfolio of properties (mechanical properties - being considered the hardest material, even harder than steel, vibrational properties - responsible for high thermal conductivity, optical properties - good transparency, surface ratio :large volume, inert material, etc.) that allow it to be used in different types of applications (mechanical protection, gas barriers, thermal barriers, biocompatibility, solar cells, LCDs, OLEDs, nanocomposites, etc., the applications of this material being open to any suggestions).
A procedure is known by which the operations of gluing the layers involved in the transfer are carried out in an enclosure at 300-350°C and by applying pressures of 8050...9000 mbar, for 1...10 min. The heat treatment is carried out in an inert atmosphere, such as helium, argon and/or nitrogen. The process has the disadvantage of using special facilities, special conditions of pressure, atmosphere and high temperature, which implies increased production costs.
There are known procedures for the wet removal of the copper substrate that involve the use of solutions such as: ammonium persulfate, aqueous solutions of ferric chloride, aqua regia solutions consisting of hydrochloric acid and nitric acid - in the case of aqua regia, both acids are in concentrated form, usually in a volume ratio of 1:3 or 1:4, hydrofluoric acid, ferric nitrate, copper chloride, copper sulfate solution - hydrochloric acid, etc.
There are known processes for chemical corrosion of copper that previously require treatment in oxygen plasma, roll-to-roll processes used to transfer graphene from copper to another flexible substrate. Such a process involves metallization of the graphene layer with various metals (nickel, cobalt, gold, iron, aluminum), followed by exfoliation of the copper foil and lamination of the deposited metal/graphene film using a PET-type foil, chemical corrosion of the metal layer deposited (eg using ferric chloride for a nickel layer).
Graphene deposited on 1 copper is protected by depositing a metallic or polymeric layer, and by applying an electrolysis potential, hydrogen bubbles appear at the metal/graphene interface that act as 3 a force separating the graphene from the copper layer. Different solutions of potassium sulfate, potassium persulfate, sodium hydroxide, etc. can be used as electrolytes. 5
13Such procedures are cumbersome, requiring long processing time, specialized equipment, not excluding the chemical corrosion or fishing stage. Although some7 authors support the reuse of the copper foil after such processes, the quality of the graphene grown on the reused foil is poor. The processes that use the corrosion solutions listed9 previously present the disadvantage of toxic vapor emissions (for example nitrogen oxides), the possibility of sample contamination (for example by inserting iron ions into the transferred film) and 11 breaking the transfer film, as well as working at relatively high temperatures in the actual corrosion step and long reaction time. 13
The technical problem that the invention seeks to solve, consists in the transfer of graphene from one substrate to another through a non-polluting process, without the emission of toxic vapors 15 and without contamination or destruction of the transparent film, with a short corrosion time, which reduces the contact of graphene with the corrosion solution, thus eliminating the possibility of contamination with ions from the corrosion solution.
The process according to the invention presents the advantage of a non-polluting graphene transfer process 19, safe for operators, without the emission of toxic vapors and without the contamination or destruction of the transparent film as a result of the use of dilute solutions, and the realization of the corrosion step at room temperature, with a short etching time, which reduces the contact of the graphene with the etching solution, thereby eliminating the possibility of ion contamination from the etching solution.
The process according to the invention does not require special operations for the preparation of the copper foil 25 for a total corrosion of the copper foil. The process according to the invention involves lower production costs compared to other graphene transfer methods, the consumption of 27 chemical reagents being reduced.

1-Depunere film de PMMA pe grafenă/Cu1-Deposition of PMMA film on graphene/Cu
1.3). Pentru depunerea PMMA pe substratul de cupru se setează parametrii de centrifugare conform datelor din tabelul 1.On a copper substrate on which graphene has been grown by CVD methods (fig. 1.1) (the method according to the invention lends itself both to CVD graphene grown within IMT Bucharest and to commercial graphene) it is deposited by centrifugation (spin coating fig. 1.2 ) using a spinner, a PMMA film (fig. 1.3). To deposit PMMA on the copper substrate, the centrifugation parameters are set according to the data in table 1.
Tabelul 1Table 1
1.4).5 µL of PMMA is used for a 1 cm 2 area of copper foil on which graphene is deposited. The film thus obtained is subjected to a heat treatment in the oven preheated to 120°C for 2 min (fig. 1.4).
2-Corodare substrat de cupru2-Corrosion of copper substrate
The process according to the invention involves the use of a freshly prepared corrosion solution, having the volumetric composition HCI:H 2 O:H 2 O 2 = 1.4:3.6:1. In a vessel with as large an opening as possible (for example: a petri dish) add the corrosion solution and nhexane, in a volumetric ratio of corrosion solution:hexane = 30:1. The copper substrate on which the PMMA/graphene layers are deposited is inserted into the vessel with the corrosion solution so that the copper is in contact with the corrosion solution, floating (fig. 1.5). It waits until the removal of copper due to corrosion of the metal is observed. The corroding solution takes on a blue-green hue. Corrosion time is 30...40 sec/cm 2 . To remove traces of the etching solution, wash the PMMA/graphene film in deionized water.
The main problem is the transfer of the transparent PMMA/graphene film from the corrosion solution into deionized water, which has a strong tendency to fold, stick, etc. In order to avoid this problem, the method according to the invention involves the use of a watch glass of appropriate dimensions so as to allow the film to be taken together with a certain amount of liquid so that the transparent film of PMMA/graphene remains suspended in the liquid (fig. 1.6). . Wash the transparent film by immersion in deionized water, and successive dilutions (fig. 1.7), until the washing water has a neutral pH or until it remains colorless.
3-Transfer film de PMMA/grafenă pe substratul de interes3-Transfer film of PMMA/graphene on the substrate of interest
The actual transfer to the substrate of interest is done on a cleaned substrate according to standard technologies for the preparation of different substrates. The transparent film is "fished out by inserting the substrate on which the transfer is desired, under the PMMA/graphene film, which is in the last washing water, and it rises together with it (fig. 1.8) obtaining a PMMA/graphene film deposited on a another substrate (fig. 1.9). The process according to the invention involves a thermal treatment at 120°C for 2 h (fig. 1.10) to remove water and ensure good adhesion to the substrate.
4-Îndepărtarea filmului de PMMA și eliberarea grafenei14-Removing the PMMA film and releasing the graphene1
1.14).7The process according to the invention aims to remove the PMMA layer by immersing the substrate on which the transparent PMMA/graphene film was transferred, in heated acetone3 at 30°C for 10 min (fig. 1.11). Remove the layer with transferred graphene and insert it into water heated to 40°C, this step is repeated 3 times (fig. 1.12). Finally, the graphene film5 transferred to another substrate (fig. 1.13) is subjected to a thermal treatment at 180°C for 2 h (fig. 1.14).7
