No entanto, oste processo á complexo e caro.

Outra microestrutura preferida é a microestrutura dupla ferrite-bainite.

Description of the object of the invention
THE RSGENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, North American, industrial, with headquarters at 2199 Addison Street Berkeley, California 94720, United States of America, intends to obtain in Portugal for "PROCESS FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF DUAL PHASE STEEL WIRE AND WIRE WITH SMALL DS CARBON CONTENT AND GREAT RESISTANCE ".

The present invention relates to a process for the manufacture of steel rods and wires having a low carbon content, high ductility and high strength by means of the cold extraction of double phase steels. At present, the term "double phase steels" refers to a type of steels that are treated by continuous annealing, batch annealing, or conventional hot rolling to obtain a ferrite matrix with a second phase dispersed as martensite bainite and / or austenite r-etid. The second phase is regulated so as to be a strong, hard and deformable phase, different from the strong and non-deformable carbide phase, found in rods and pearlitic wires. This phase must be adequately dispersed and in sufficient volume fraction, ie, greater than 10%, to provide a substantial contribution to the strength in the heat treated state and to increase the rate of hardening during the yarn extraction. Various heat treatment routes may be used to create the double phase microstructure and the morphology depends on the thermal treatment used in each case. A preferred heat treatment is the intermediate quenching method, i.e. to sand-proof and season up to 100% martensite before annealing in the field * + g of two

phases and tempering for a martensite ferrite structure.
The present invention also relates to the yarns, bars and rods with high strength and high ductility produced by the process according to the present invention.
The steel wire has many known uses, for example in the manufacture of cables, chains and springs. Also used to fabricate steel straps and flange wire for pneumatic tires, and steel strands are included in the multi-colored electric wire to increase the strength of the wire. traction. In these applications, the diameter requirements range from 0.127nm to over 6.35mm with resistance requirements ranging from
1722.5 mpa to 2756 mpa in the smaller diameters, it is important to provide a steel wire with a high tensile strength and good ductility in the required diameter.
The oldest and most commonly used process for the production of very resistant and very ductile yarn is to patent a pearly steel of almost eutectic composition. However, this process is complex and expensive. Another drawback of the patenting process is an inherent limitation of the maximum wire diameter that can be produced at a given strength level.
There is a need for steel wire and rods with a higher tensile strength and higher ductility than those of the steel wires and rods produced by the known processes, as well as an economical inhalation process for the production of very strong steel rods and rods . The present invention would supersede the conventional patenting process of pearlitic steel to produce yarn by a process wherein an alloy of relatively simple composition is cold drawn into yarn or rods in a single multi-pass operation, i.e. will be intermediate heat treatments of annealing or patenting. The elimination of patent heat treatments in the production of highly resistant steel wire would reduce the production cost of highly resistant steel wire especially taking into account the present situation of fuels,
The cold extraction process requires a low alloy steel composition with a micro-structure and morphology which provides great initial strength, large ducti-25.5Ό & Ο. - File FA-10 / AJT / RJS
fastness hardening in operation β good cold formability. The steel shall be capable of being cold drawn without intermediate annealing or patenting heat treatments with the desired diameter, tensile strength and ductility.
A specific group of steels with a chemical composition specifically engineered to provide supercritical mechanical values is known in the technical language as HSLA (high strength, low-alloy Steel). These steels contain carbon as an element that increases strength, in an amount reasonably compatible with weldability and ductility. Various amounts of various types of carbide alloying agents are added to obtain the mechanical properties characterizing these steels. However, the high tensile strength and ductility required in many wire and rod applications do not appear to be achievable with the use of HELA steels.
71 · 2500 - 05-63
The factors that determine the properties of steels with low carbon content are mainly their carbon content and microstructure, and secondarily the residual alloy. In general, carbon-containing steels contain silicon, manganese, or a combination of silicon and manganese. In addition, carbide-forming elements may be added, for example vanadium, chromium, niuba, molybdenum.
The low carbon steels and microstructures in uupla, characterized by a strong second blunt phase in a soft ferrite matrix, have the potential to meet the tensile strength, ductility, flexibility and diameter requirements of steel wire with large resistance. On the other hand, they have the potential to achieve a level of cold formability that allows cold extraction without patenting or intermediate heating. In particular, a double ferrite-martensite steel with low content of carbon, described in U.S. Patent N c .4.067,756, published on 10 January 1978, has an interest in the present invention because it has good characteristics of high strength and high ductility and consists of inexpensive elements. However, as generally manufactured, it has a tensile strength of about 827 MPa, which is much lower than the resis-355

the tensile strength required for many applications of high tensile steel wire. The process according to the present invention is directed to the production of a high strength steel wire having a tensile strength of at least about 827 mpy. A preferred range of tensile strength is from 827 mpa to 2687 mpa, but resistances above 2756 mpa can be achieved.
An object of the present invention is therefore to provide an improved process for the manufacture of high strength and high ductility steel wires and rods and for the production of steel wires or rods having the desired diameter with greater resistance to traction, ductility and flexibility.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a process for manufacturing steel wires or rods with high strength and high ductility, which comprises the extraction and cooling phase of a double phase steel composition, in the desired strength and ductility, will be treatments thermal annealing or patenting, thereby providing complete flexibility in the choice of yarn diameter.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a process for the manufacture of high strength and high ductility steel wires or rods which eliminates the intermediate patenting phase used in the current process of manufacturing pearlitic steel wire, thereby reducing complexity, cost and energy consumption of the process for the manufacture of high strength steel wires and rods.
Yet another object of the present invention is to provide a process for the manufacture of high strength steel wires and rods which is versatile, allowing a wide range of diameters, strength and non-wire ductility properties or ultimate steel rod, based on choice of the initial double microstructure and in the manipulation of microstructure by appropriate heat treatment.
Yet another object of the present invention is to provide high strength and ductile steel wires or rods having a tensile strength of at least about 827 MPa.

become apparent from the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings.
In general, the present invention relates to steel wires or rods of low carbon content, with high strength and high ductility, and the process for their manufacture. The process includes friction extraction and a low carbon content double phase steel, in the desired diameter, in a single multiple pass operation. The steel is characterized by a double cross-structure essentially constituted by a strong second phase dispersed in a soft ferrite matrix and a microstructure and morphology with sufficient cold formability to allow reductions of cross-sectional area to about 99.9%
A preferred embodiment of the present invention is a steel rod or wire having a low carbon content, high strength and high ductility, produced from a steel composition characterized by an appropriate double ferrite-martensite microstructure, as shown for example in Figure 1, and the process for its manufacture. The process includes cold extraction of the double ferrite steel in the desired diameter in a single multiple pass operation. In high strength steels with a double ferrite-martensite microstructure, the second, strong and deformable phase consists predominantly of martensite but may contain retained bainite and austenite. The second strong phase is dispersed in a matrix, ductile and soft ferrite; martensite provides strength in the composite, while ferrite provides ductility.
Figure 1 is an optical micrograph showing a typical low carbon double-phase ferrite-martensite microstructure prior to cold extraction.
Figure 2 is a scanning electron micrograph of stripped martensite transmission comprising the second strong phase in a double phase steel in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 3 β is a graphical exemplification which makes a typical comparison between a friction extraction curve for dual microstructure steel wire according to the present invention and an extraction curve for pearlitic steel wire

according to a patenting process.
According to the present invention, high strength and high ductility steel wires or rods are produced by a process whereby a steel composition with a small carbon content, characterized by a double microstructure essentially consisting of a strong second phase dispersed in a soft ferrite matrix is cold drawn into the desired diameter in a single multiple pass operation. The starting steel composition, prior to cold extraction, must have a double microstructure and morphology sufficient to provide a level of cold formability which allows cross-sectional area reductions to 99.9% during cold extraction,
The process according to the present invention provides an advantage compared to known processes because it eliminates the intermediate heat treatments and patenting steps used in the processes known for manufacturing pearl steel and thereby reduces the complexity, cost and energy consumption of the process. In addition, a broader range of rod and wire diameter measurements can be produced by the process of the present invention than in the patenting process. In the patenting process, there is an inherent limitation of the maximum wire diameter that can be produced at a given strength level.
Referring to Figure 3, the differences between the process of the present invention and the patenting process are shown. The solid line represents the cold draw chart of a double carbon steel wire having a low carbon content according to the present invention θ the tensile strengths which can be achieved in the different diameters. The dashed lines indicate the extraction graph of a perlite steel wire according to the patenting process, which includes the intermediate heat treatments. In the graph of perlite steel wire, intermediate heat treatments are required to achieve the ultimate tensile strength which the process according to the present invention can achieve in various diameters. These intermediate heat treatments increase the process complexity and cost for the manufacture of high strength steel wire. The prccessc according to the pre-

The present invention does not include intermediate thermal treatments and thus provides a significant improvement over the known process.
The process according to the present invention can produce steel wires and rods with a great diversity of tensile strength, ductility and diameter. The physical properties of the steel wire or rod in a given diameter are determined by a combination of the initial microstructure, the properties of the starting steel and the amount of subsequent reduction of the cross-sectional area during the cold extraction process. Since the microstructure of the steel is easily manipulated by appropriate heat treatment, the properties of the drawn wire can be obtained to the specifications required by the desired application. The choice of alloying elements such as silicon, aluminum, manganese and carbide forming elements, such as molybdenum, niobium, vanadium, etc., is determined by the microstructure and desired properties. Thus, a wide variety of alloys, including many simple and inexpensive alloys, may be used, provided they can be subjected to heat treatment to the desired double phase microstructure.
A preferred double microstructure is the ferrite-martensite microstructure. Another preferred microstructure is the double ferrite-bainite microstructure. In both cases, the second strong phase, either martensite or bainite, is dispersed in a ductile soft ferrite matrix.
In a preferred embodiment of the process according to the present invention, the starting steel composition is essentially composed of iron, from about 0.05 to 0.15% by weight of carbon, and from about 1.0 to 3.0 $ under silicon. In another preferred embodiment, the initial steel composition consists essentially of from about 0.01 to 0.15% by weight of carbon, about 1 to 3% by weight of silicon, and about 0.05% C, 15% Vanadium weight. In both preferred embodiments, the steel composition is thermally treated to form a double ferrite martensite backbone in a fibrous morphology. Briefly, the preferred process comprises the steps of austenitizing the steel composition, quenching the

steel to transform the austenite into practically 100% martensite, heating the resulting steel compound to an annealing temperature for a sufficient time to provide the desired austenite and ferrite ratio, rapid quenching of the austenite ferrite composition to transform the austenite into martensite, and cold extraction of the resulting double phase steel which is characterized by a double ferrite-martensite microstructure in a fibrous morphology at the desired diameter in a multi-pass operation.
More specifically, the starting steel compound is heated to a temperature, Tp above the critical temperature at which the austenite is formed. The range of temperature is from about 10 ^ 8 0 8 C to 1170 C. The composition is held at that temperature for a period of time sufficient to essentially completely austenize steel. The resulting composition is tempered to transform the austenite into essentially 100% martensite. The composition is then heated again to the quenching temperature, T ^, in the range of two stages + *) The temperature range <= <+ κ 800®C is from about 8 to 1000 C. The composition is maintained at this temperature for a period of time sufficient to transform the martensitic steel composition into the desired volume ratio of ferrite and austenite. After the final tempering, the austenite is transformed into martensite, producing a strong second phase of martensite dispersed in a matrix of soft or ductile ferrite,
The steel composition at this point is characterized by a unique microstructure which is a thin, isotropic and acicular martensite in a ductile ferrite matrix. The microstructure is formed as a consequence of the combination of the double heat treatment and the presence of silicon in the amount specified above. The unique microstructure maximizes the potential ductility of the ferrite soft phase and also fully exploits the strong martensite phase as a charge carrier constituent in the double microstructure. The structure, together with the morphology of the steel composition, allows the steel to be cold drawn into the desired wire or rod diameter in a multi-pass operation.
Any double-phase steel may be used in pre-855Ò8 pre.

in accordance with the present invention, provided that a microstructure and double morphology with sufficient cold formability can be produced to allow reductions of the cross-sectional area to about 99.9% when the composition is cold extracted. In particular, double phase ferrite martensite steels have a higher continuous yield behavior, higher tensile strength, and better ductility than commercial high alloy steels with high strength, including micron and fine grain steels. In addition, the large proportion of yield traction and the high strain rate in the ferrite-martensite double phase steel provides excellent formability.
The exact temperature Tj at which the steel composition in the first phase of austenization is heated is not decisive as long as it is higher than the temperature at which complete austenisation takes place. The exact temperature TL, in the second heating step, in which the composition is transformed into the two ferrite and austenite phases, depends on the desired volume and volume of ferrite and austenite, which in turn depends on the volume ratio In general, the desired volume ratio of ferrite and martensite depends on the desired final properties of the steel rod. In general, 10 to 40% of the martensite volume in the ferrite-martensite microstructure allows the steel composition to be cold-drawn in diameter which represent reductions up to 99.9% cross-sectional area and will continue to give good result in yarns and steel rods with a tensile strength of at least about 827 mpa. Tensile strengths in the range of 827 MPa to 2687 MPa are generally obtained, but tensile strengths of 2756 MPa and larger may also be obtained.
The following examples more clearly describe the process according to the present invention, the resulting properties of the wires and rods produced by this process, as well as the flexibility of the process as to the range of choice of alloys, tensile strengths, ductility and diameter.

A high ductility to meet the requirements of the rim wire used in the manufacture of automotive tires. The bead wire requires a tensile strength of 5% by weight and a tensile strength of 1488 mpa. The collar wire should be about 0.94 mm in diameter with ductility sufficient to pass a torsion test requiring 58 axial torsions in a 203 mm extension.
A steel rod having a diameter of 5.6 mm with a composition consisting essentially of iron, 1% by weight of carbon, 2% by weight of silicon and 0.1% by weight of vanadium was austenitized and tempered rapidly to give a composition practically 100% martensitic. 0 man was then heated again at a temperature of 95 C in the range 6 two-feee s' 4 -t II quickly and tempered to produce a ferrite-martensite microstructure dual about 30 $ by volume martensite and by $ 70 volume of ferrite, the needle-like character, acicular microstructure of ferrite-martensite can be seen in the optical micrograph of Figure 1.
The thermally treated bar was then cold drawn through bevelled conical dies to a diameter of 0.94 mm in 8 passes of approximately 3b% area reduction
per passage. After a short quenching slowdown at 425 ° C, analogous to that of ordinary practice, a final tensile strength of 1902 MPa was obtained, thus satisfying the tensile strength requirement of the flange wire.
The ductility of the steel wire was sufficient to satisfy the requirement of the torsion test.
Example 2
A steel rod consisting essentially of iron, 0.1% by weight of carbon and 2.0% by weight of silicon was hot rolled to a diameter of 6.4 mm. 0 man was then heated to a temperature of about 115 ° C for 8 minutes to about 30 austenize composition. The steel was then quenched in ice cold sodium chloride saturated solution to transform the austenite into almost 100% martensite. 0 rod was then rapidly reheated to a temperature of 95o C 8 to transform the structure 7θ approximately $ $ 3θ ferrite and austenite. The barrel was then quenched in ice cold sodium chloride solution to convert the austenite to martensite.

Finally, the bar was cold drawn to a diameter of 0.76 mm where its tensile strength was 24.0 mbar, and also drawn in a 0.6 mm diameter in which its tensile strength was 248 mpa. Continued cold extraction may allow tensile strengths of 2758 mpa or greater to be achieved.
