Description
The present invention relates to a method for improving the survivability of a partially submersible drilling vessel of the type which floats when in operational condition and whose stability depends on a change in its waterline area, as well as such a vessel which has a deck structure, a plurality of columns projecting down from the deck structure, pontoon devices on at least one of the columns, the deck structure, the columns and the pontoon devices forming a fixed, permanent configuration relative to each other, and a buoyancy modifying element on at least one of the columns.
Recent accidents or near-accidents with ocean-going partially submersible drilling rigs have led to the safety of hitherto accepted rig constructions being called into question. However, because the rigs are so functional in form with their pairs of slender columns providing little waterline area, it has been difficult for the ship's engineer to improve the survivability of the rigs without harming their drilling function.
Two main economic factors govern the construction of semi-submersible drilling rigs, namely the amount of variable deck load (VDL, which is the weight that can be carried, typically about 1.5 m above the pipe racks) and the weather window (WW, which is the average number of days per year in which the rig can perform drilling due to sufficiently small wave-induced motions). There is a conflict in the requirements for large VDL and WW, because VDL is limited by the stability requirements, while a large waterline area is definitely unfavorable for the movement properties, even if it contributes to satisfactory stability.
Prosedyrene for denne operasjon betinger at tilstrekkelig ballast og konsumvarer må tømmes over bord i denne forbindelse. As a result, drilling rigs are designed to drill at draft in moderate weather conditions and to have the ability to significantly reduce the draft and top deck load in a relatively short time to withstand severe storm conditions. The procedures for this operation stipulate that sufficient ballast and consumables must be emptied overboard in this connection.
Det vil forstås at en betydelig forbedring av den delvis nedsenkbare riggs konstruksjon kan oppnås dersom: It will be understood that a significant improvement in the construction of the partially submersible rig can be achieved if:
(a) VDL økes uten uheldig innflytelse på WW, (a) VDL is increased without adverse influence on WW,
(b) the necessity of dumping ballast and consumables to change operating conditions between drilling and survival drafts is reduced or eliminated.
For the purpose of increasing the VDL capacity of partially submersible drilling units, one or more of the following modifications are usually used: additional columns; outgrowths on the connections between pillar and pontoon to improve transit stability; outgrowths on the columns at operational draft; and increase in pontoon displacement.
The addition of columns and/or outgrowths on the columns in the operational draft adversely affects the forces exerted on the vessel by waves and currents during use and can lead to a significant increase in the price of the construction.
Økning av pongtongdeplasement vil ikke påvirke den totale stabilitet dersom den ikke medfører en tilsvarende økning av ballastmengden, og derfor utgjør den ikke noen effektiv måte Increasing the pontoon displacement will not affect the overall stability if it does not lead to a corresponding increase in the amount of ballast, and therefore it does not constitute an effective way
Moreover, it can also be expensive. Growths on the connections between column and pontoon do not influence the stability during drilling and survival dredging, although they may be important for the transit condition.
From NO 749/73, a partially submersible drilling vessel is known whose stability is essentially achieved by the center of gravity in the construction being below the center of buoyancy, in contrast to more common partially submersible drilling vessels where the stability depends on a change in the waterline area. In this known construction, the columns which support the deck construction are kept very slim to give little wave influence. On the other hand, this causes problems with large changes in draft when the vessel e.g. takes on board cargo, and to counteract this change in draft, the vessel's columns are equipped with movable ring-shaped buoyancy elements which are placed in the waterline in normal working position when there will be a sudden and relatively large change in the vessel's apparent weight. These buoyancy elements are not suitable for improving the vessel's survivability under difficult weather conditions, as its stability does not depend on the waterline cross-section, but on the location of the center of gravity.
The present invention seeks to improve the survivability of a partially submerged vessel such as a drilling rig by providing a variable geometry of the buoyancy volume. This is achieved according to the invention by means of a method as defined in claim 1. In the case where the vessel is mostly in the form of a single column, a method as defined in claim 3 is used.
The invention also relates to partially submersible vessels with changeable stability characteristics as further defined in claims 4 and 15. Further advantageous features of the invention are indicated in the independent claims.
In the following, an embodiment of the invention as it can be applied to drilling rigs will be described as an example, below

Fig. 3 is a detail in ground plan and schematically shows a means for translational movement of the sleeve element on the column; Fig. 4 is a detail similar to fig. 3, but showing another form of buoyancy modifying element; and Fig. 5 is a schematic view of a single cylindrical buoy to which a sleeve-like element is mounted.
Reference should then be made to the drawings, where 10 generally denotes a partially submersible drilling rig which has a drill deck structure 12 with a plurality of columns 14 projecting down from this. The columns can conveniently have a circular cross-section, but it will be understood that they can have other shapes, e.g. rectangular cross-section. Pontoons 16 of conventional shape are attached to the bottom of the columns 14 of conventional shape, and to that extent this is a standard construction. 18 denotes the transit water line, i.e. the water level when the drilling rig is towed or propelled forward and is at its transit draft with the top of the pontoon hulls as far clear of the water as possible, and 20 denotes the drilling water line, which in practice can also be considered the survival water line, even though this water line may be different. Due to the relative movements between the vessel and the waves, the distance of the deck 12 above the waterline in survival mode should not be reduced below certain limits if the vessel is to be able to survive a storm or avoid damage.
3) .. Buoyancy modifying elements 22 of a sleeve-like shape are mounted around the end columns 14 on guides 24 (see fig. 3) ..
The sleeve-like elements 22 are largely ring-shaped in cross-section and are mainly cylindrical in shape. The thickness Ar of the annular cross-section of the elements 22 and the height H of the cylindrical portion of the element 22 are selected to give the drilling rig 10 the desired increase in volume or buoyancy at the survival water line 20 when the elements 22 are locked in position at the survival water line 20, as shown in fig. 1. The height H is chosen so that it enables a sufficient displacement area in relation to the water surface as a result of the vessel's movements and/or wave movements as indicated at 30. The elements 22 are terminated at their lower end in a cuff 32, which has reduced outer diameter to provide an inwardly tapering surface 31, e.g. as it showed, inverted truncated cone shape, or possibly an inward curved shape. This inwardly tapered or curved end of the sleeve reduces impact effects when the sleeve-like element is immersed in water.
1 for å gi mulighet for å variere operasjonsbetingelsene. As can best be seen from fig. 3, the longitudinal guides 24 on the columns 14 cooperate with corresponding means in the form of rollers 38 arranged in grooves 40 arranged between segments 42 of the annular wall of the element 22. Suitable means of movement, here schematically shown as a pulley system 44, are also arranged in the slot 40 and operated by winches (not shown) on the deck 12 to move the element 22 along the column 14 between the lower position or the transit position, as shown in fig. 1, and the upper position or survival waterline position. It will be understood that the element 22 will be locked firmly to the column in both of the two positions, and under certain conditions precautions may have been taken to lock the element to the column in other positions than that shown in fig. 1 to allow for varying the operating conditions.
When the drilling rig is initially towed or driven to the drilling site, the element 22 will be locked to the column at pontoon level, and if a larger sea is encountered during the towing, the element 22 will serve to increase the buoyancy volume of the structure by contributing to the buoyancy at the pontoon level. The design of the cuff 32 absorbs the shock of the waves and/or movements that seek to submerge the pontoon and the height H of the element 22 serves to provide an increased area of stability improvement during the towing condition.
On arrival at the drilling site, the pontoons are filled to the necessary extent to submerge the drilling rig to the drilling water line 20, where it is anchored. During this operation, the element 22 remains locked to the column in its lower position and is thus underwater.
During drilling, the relatively thin columns 14 with radius r (Fig. 2) give the drilling rig minimal waterline area and therefore minimal wave-induced movements under acceptable drilling weather conditions. However, when a storm warning is received, the element 22 is released from its lower position on the column and moved up to the survival waterline condition, where it is locked again.
Etter at stormen er løyet kan taljeelementene 44 betjenes In this condition, it increases the waterline area of the column and changes the vertical distribution of the buoyancy volume. Since the thickness Ar of the ring and the height H of the elements 22 are calculated to give it the necessary increase in volume and necessary height to be able to accept the large relative movements, and since the vessel's movements are no longer a factor, the drilling rig can be allowed to follow the waves, i.e. .pounding and rolling with the waves to keep the drill deck structure 12 at a safe distance above the wave crests 28. After the storm has subsided, the hoist elements 44 can be operated
1. Elementet 22 låses på nytt i denne stilling, og boringen kan fortsette mens søylen 14 på nytt inntar sitt lille tverrsnittsareal i vannlinjen for å gi de reduserte bøl-geinduserte bevegelser som er en forutsetning for boringen. to force the elements 22 down along the guides 24 back to an underwater position, preferably the lower position shown in fig. 1. The element 22 is re-locked in this position, and the drilling can continue while the column 14 again occupies its small cross-sectional area in the waterline to provide the reduced wave-induced movements which are a prerequisite for the drilling.
Although the elements 22 are not shown here on all the columns connected to the pontoons, it will be understood that under certain conditions the elements 22 may be arranged on all the columns, or special columns may be arranged to support the elements 22. It will also it is understood that although the elements 22 are shown with a mainly cylindrical shape, they may have other shapes, e.g. they can be toroid-shaped, or they can be divided into segments so that they only extend over part of the circumference of the column, as shown at .42 in fig. 4. These segments 42 can advantageously be mounted on a circular carriage 46 which cooperates with the guides 24 (in a similar manner as described in connection with Fig. 3), to hold the segment 42 positively in place. However, the segments should be constructed to provide good safety against punctures, and to avoid punctures and filling, the elements 22 can be filled with concrete or another suitable material so that in the event of damage to the skin of the element 22, water will not be able to penetrate an empty internal cavity in the element and flow freely in and out of this.
One further imagines that a plurality of elements 22 can be replaced by a single element on a central column through which the drill string passes, and of course any suitable form of movement device, control device and locking device can be used.
In fig. 5, a somewhat different application 5 of the invention is shown. Here, a cylindrical buoy 47 has a single column arrangement 14. In this case, no pontoon is attached to the column arrangement. A buoyancy modifying element such as the sleeve-like element 22 is movably mounted on the column 14 and is movable so that it can be placed in a first position at the vessel's waterline, as indicated on the right in fig. 5, and in a second position at the bottom of the column 14, as will be seen on the left in fig. 5. Here too, the element 2-2 will be locked to the lower end of the buoy when minimal wave-induced movements in the buoy are desired. When maximum clearance of the upper end of the buoy above the water surface is required, the element 22 is locked at the waterline.
