Description
Den foreliggende oppfinnelse angår trekonserverings- The present invention relates to wood preservation
Mer spesielt angår oppfinnelsen kreosot-baserte emulsjoner og derivater, agents (in the following part of the description referred to as preservatives) and methods for producing these. The agents can be used when preserving timber and other substrates. The agents according to the invention can uniquely show intra-component interaction and substrate-preservative-atmosphere interaction. More particularly, the invention relates to creosote-based emulsions and derivatives,
The agents of the present invention exhibit novel substrate interactions with other known preservatives of a similar or a completely opposite group, resulting in a complementary increased preservative efficacy, and unique substrate morphology processing.
Creosote has been in use for over 300 years, with British Patent No. 214 being granted to Becker, J. and Serie, H. in 1681. Its primary use has been in wood and textile preservation with forays into the fields of medicine, pharmacy, dyes, chemicals, carbon black and fuels.
The diverse and colorful history of creosote preservative utilization and benefits has been hampered only by inherent problems of odor, skin irritation, and related product handling problems.
Disadvantages that have become apparent in the use of creosote in recent times are the heating costs for plant use, flammability, odor, pollution and unacceptable oily, tarry or "crud" coated deposits on the surfaces of treated wood. Some or all of the above limit the use of creosote to treating timber that is not likely to come into contact with people or livestock. The inherent properties of raw creosote prevent its use in residential applications and building or manufacturing timber where an aesthetically satisfactory wood preservative treatment could play an important role in the preservation and improvement of a versatile and desirable building resource.
The present invention makes it possible to use creosote as a preservative for lignocellulosic substrates and other substrates in simple and complex designs, treatments and/or unique broad-spectrum or highly specific complementary preservative roles that significantly minimize the disadvantages of black, wet, bleeding , staining, tarry, oily, "crud"-forming surfaces, skin irritation, odor irritation, flammability, pollution and high energy costs. The potential advantages that lie in a cleaner creosote-based preserving/preserving treatment are far-reaching and as varied as the variations in methods of treatment and preserving manipulation that lie in the invention.
Complaints of handling difficulties associated with high-temperature-creosote-treated (HTC) products were made in Australia shortly after the introduction of HTC in 1969. Many piles "bled" heavily in hot weather and developed tough, greasy or viscous tarry glossy surfaces called "crud ". HTC caused tactile skin sensitization, irritation and burning in many individuals handling the treated timber. Other countries have had similar experience with creosote-treated products. Despite expensive work in various parts of the world to elucidate the mechanism of "bleeding" and "crud" formation, scientists have not been able to produce a commercially acceptable improved creosote, and problems persist.
In the 1970s, ultrafine pigmented HTC emulsions, which were called "pigmented emulsified colored creosote" and hereinafter called "pigment-emulsified-creosote", were developed in Australia. The emulsions consist of HTC, water and pigment together with a small amount of emulsifiers and stabilizers. The result was a wood preservative based on creosote which provides a clean, aesthetically pleasing product.
Australian Patent No. 514,897 describes the oil-in-water. emulsions of creosote containing predispersed micronized pigments, which emulsions were produced under ultra-high shear conditions. Such emulsions do not have the stability of the agents according to the present invention in the presence of wood extractives. In use under strict conditions with high temperatures and pressure and continuous shear force, the present means are better than those according to patent 514 897. The means according to the invention are far less sensitive to contamination than those according to patent 514 897.
I begynnelsen ble kreosot-emulsjonen ifølge patent At first the creosote emulsion was according to patent
514 897 used for brushing, spraying or dipping treatment for general private domestic applications, such as for fences and outdoor furniture. In 1975 the State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV) together with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) tested the former emulsion in a pilot plant by pressure treating round eucalyptus pile stumps. When the treated samples were removed from the cylinder, they were very wet and showed a sludge-like pigment coating. However, the surface emulsion separated quickly after exposure to air, and the stumps dried quickly.
For å produsere store volumer av emulsjonen ifølge patent A further trial in a pilot plant was then carried out in which 200 transmission poles were treated with the emulsion according to patent 514 897. The good results in this trial not only showed the stability of the emulsion, but provided treated poles which were dry and aesthetically satisfactory. On the basis of this result, a contact was made for the treatment of 3,000 full-size eucalyptus poles, and this commercial trial began in 1979. To produce large volumes of the emulsion according to patent
514,897 for this experiment, a new emulsion plant was built. Unfortunately, the emulsion was contaminated with residual Tanalith C solution left in the treatment plant, and this led to an unstable emulsion that deteriorated after 14 treatments. The emulsion was found to be a coarse dispersion of water/creosote mixture and not an ultrafine emulsion as originally used. The trial was terminated after less than a third of the proposed bars had been treated, because the emulsion could not be reconstituted.
Mer nylig har intensiv forskning ført til utviklingen More recently, intensive research has led to its development
Et eksperiment er blitt utformet for å sammenligne oppfinnelsen med HCT med hensyn til vektreten-sjon, penetreringsevne, fordeling, eksudasjon, våthet, overflate-tørking, renhet og lukt. of the present invention which provides a far more stable emulsion. An experiment has been designed to compare the invention with HCT with respect to weight retention, penetrability, distribution, exudation, wetness, surface drying, cleanliness and odor.
According to the invention, a preservative is provided which is ultra-stable in the presence of wood extractives, which agent comprises an emulsion of a wood preservative creosote grade, from 5 to 95% water and one or more pre-dispersed micronized pigments, which emulsion has been produced under ultra-high shear conditions, characterized in that said agent contains from a trace to 2.5% by weight of a rheology-structuring agent, from 0.25 to 10% by weight of an alkali metal salt of a three-derived resin, from 0.1 to 5% by weight of a surfactant, from 0.25 to 5% by weight of a lignin sulfonate and from 0.25 to 2% by weight of a pigment-modifying resin, which percentages are based on the total weight of said emulsion.
Vann-i-olje-emulsjoner foretrekkes. The emulsions according to the invention can be water-in-oil or oil-in-water depending on the proportions of components present. Water-in-oil emulsions are preferred.
The agents according to the invention are suitable for continuous use at temperatures exceeding 100°C under pressure, corrected or uncorrected for component composition within predetermined limits and able to withstand significant contamination with inert materials, opposing ions and chemicals and acid extractives from the timber substrates .

The preservatives according to the invention are chemically processed under conditions of high shear so that they exhibit thixotropic behavior after standing and Newtonian behavior when their yield stress is exceeded by shear forces or pumping and application above 60°C.
While effective previously known creosote preservation of timber required high pressure and high temperature, the creosote product according to the invention can be used by any of the known methods for applying a coating to, or impregnating a surface or sapwood in transmission line poles, natural round posts and piles, and softwood and hardwood. Liquid preparations according to the invention can be applied to porous substrates, by impregnation at ambient or elevated pressure and at ambient or elevated temperatures. The viscosity of the product can be regulated so that the products have the consistency of a liquid paste, wax or gel. When the products according to the invention are in those forms, they can also be applied to surfaces by rubbing. When heat setting materials are incorporated into the products according to the invention, as mentioned above, the coatings can be made stronger after application by applying heat.
Lignocelluloseholdige substrater og andre substrater, Lignocellulosic substrates and other substrates,
kan preserveres ved at det på nevnte substrater påføres et preserveringsmiddel som er ultrastabilt i nærvær av tre-ekstraktiver, hvilket middel omfatter en emulsjon av en tre-preserverende kvalitet av kreosot, fra 5 til 95 % vann og ett eller flere for-dispergerte mikroniserte pigmenter, can be preserved by applying to said substrates a preservative that is ultrastable in the presence of wood extractives, which agent comprises an emulsion of a wood-preserving grade of creosote, from 5 to 95% water and one or more pre-dispersed micronized pigments ,
Oppfinnelsen tilveiebringer således en fremgangsmåte til behandling av tømmer til standard-spesifikasjoner som kreves over hele verden, ved langt lavere temperaturer enn hittil på-krevet under anvendelse av høytemperatur-kreosoter og lignende oljebaserte preserveringsmidler, for i høy grad betydelig energi-besparelser i anlegg-prepareringstid og utstyr-slitasje og skader. which emulsion has been produced under ultra-high shear conditions, characterized in that said agent contains from a trace to 2.5% by weight of a rheology-structuring agent, from 0.25 to 10% by weight of an alkali metal salt of a three- derivative resin, from 0.1 to 5% by weight of a surfactant, from 0.25 to 5% by weight of a lignin sulfonate and from 0.25 to 2% by weight of a pigment modifying resin, which percentages are based on the total weight of said emulsion. The invention thus provides a method for treating timber to standard specifications required worldwide, at far lower temperatures than hitherto required using high-temperature creosotes and similar oil-based preservatives, for highly significant energy savings in plant- preparation time and equipment wear and damage.
The agents according to the invention exhibit greatly reduced steam emission at temperatures up to 95°C, immediately after the autoclave door is opened by pressure impregnation of timber and in the immediate vicinity of the treated timber which is removed hot from the autoclave. The vapors spread quickly and are different creosote bases. When brushing, spraying, dipping, rolling or soaking at ambient or elevated temperatures, the vapors are likewise reduced and are of a less irritating nature than HTC at the same temperature.
The agents according to the invention show greatly reduced skin irritation when freshly treated timber sections are non-greasy, far safer to handle and dry quickly in the open atmosphere. Reduced leaching occurs during storage and the surface of the PEC treated timber dries to an aesthetically pleasing 'powdery' dry rustic appearance with further exposure, regardless of high surface temperatures of up to 65°C. No creosote seeps from the surface of the treated timber after the drying reaction is complete.
Eksempler på lignocellulose-holdige substrater er Examples of lignocellulose-containing substrates are
tømmer, kryssfinér, trefiber-plater, Scrimber® timber, plywood, fibreboard, Scrimber®
(rekonsolidert ved) og hardpapp. Andre substrater er eksempelvis metall og murverk da midlene ifølge opp- (reconsolidated wood) and hardboard. Other substrates are, for example, metal and masonry, as the funds according to
finnelsen også er egnet som marine anti-groingsmidler og kan anvendes som belegg for svømmebasseng-vegger og gulv for å minimalisere vekst av alger. the invention is also suitable as marine anti-fouling agents and can be used as a coating for swimming pool walls and floors to minimize the growth of algae.
At known densities, timber or other substrate treated with the agents according to the invention absorbs more total liquid (approx. 30% mass per unit volume) than corresponding samples treated with high-temperature creosote under identical conditions and setup. Overall clean uptake of high temperature creosote is similar.
Used as a timber preservative, the agents according to the invention are meant to penetrate the cell walls and thereby introduce creosote and/or broad-spectrum and/or very specific toxins into the most vulnerable microstructure of the wood. Toxins that are carried into the cell wall and possibly into the capillaries within the cell wall in the PEC water phase are deposited when the emulsion is broken in the acidic substrate inside the cells, providing <p>reservation of the ultrastructural area.
In timber, the agents according to the invention penetrate the enclosed pores due to the natural affinity for water that was transported in the living wood from cell to cell via the enclosed pores which act as valves in the goat in the living trees. The closure of these "doors" in the partially dried goat ready for treatment is restrictive for high-temperature creosote penetration, but accessible to PEC, which emulsion is broken into the substrate immediately after treatment, thereby depositing toxins and creosote in the cells sealed against loss of creosote or added poison by depositing pigment and/or fillers in these "doors". The same unique function of the invention prevents bleeding with time and temperature.
Used in timber preservation <p>the agents according to the invention with or without additives penetrate easily from the jets into the tracheids in goat tissue, can wash over and/or emulsify resins and gums and thus expand conductive elements for the liquid and after the emulsion has been broken by the acidic medium and time, toxins are deposited that are trapped in the treated timber by the deposition of pigment and/or fillers that prevent bleeding.
The agents according to the invention can be varied to a degree that allows orderly regulation of the distribution of preservatives and additives within the structure of penetrable softwood and hardwood, the whole further influenced by heat and/or pressure and/or time due to the arranged chemical conditions and the stability of the emulsions.
The agents according to the invention provide an ultra-stable emulsion which can be modified by the addition of inert fillers, specialized chemicals and non-flammable organic liquids and complex solutions, colloids and/or other emulsions, whereby the preservative-treated timber acquires fire-retardant properties. Particularly significant is the range of fire-retardant organic liquids that can be dissolved in and/or emulsified with the creosote to form a fire-retardant preservative that does not exhibit any of the vapor problems associated with some of the organic liquids alone. A number of fire-retardant chemicals that can be emulsified by the invention show inherent preservative effectiveness and will be able to complement the agents according to the invention.
Fire-retardant materials according to the invention can be used to treat timber suitable for indoor and outdoor building timber, whereby colored fire-retardant preserved timber construction materials are obtained which are maintenance-free within a wide range of architectural or industrial end products.
The agents according to the invention exhibit natural fire retardancy contributed by the timber substrate which has been treated with PEC by dipping, diffusion, soaking or pressure impregnation.
PEC can be used in conventional pressure impregnation systems at far lower temperatures than HTC or conventional oil-based preservatives to achieve standard charges, a clean dry surface and maintain environmentally acceptable plant, equipment and product. The vapor pressure is low, organic vapors are negligible and any residues can be reused in the process. The heat supply is minimal and the heat losses to the surroundings negligible.
The agents according to the invention are exothermic during pumping and recycling, so that heating times are short and energy-saving.
Midlene ifølge oppfinnelsen oppviser naturlig affinitet The agents according to the invention exhibit natural affinity
for tanalitt og annet tømmer behandlet med uorganisk salt som preserveringsmiddel og muliggjør en lang rekke forskjellige opplegg for dobbelt preserveringsmiddelbehandling som skal utføres for tømmer for marint miljø såvel som tømmer for kjemisk eller risikabelt miljø. for tanalite and other timber treated with inorganic salt as a preservative and enables a wide range of different arrangements for double preservative treatment to be carried out for timber for marine environments as well as timber for chemical or hazardous environments.
All grades of creosote are considered to fall within the scope of the invention, but the preferred creosotes are those derived from high-temperature coal-tar distillates, especially crystal-free oils and clear oils; e.g. those that satisfy the American Wood Preserver's Association's standard AWPA P 1-69
og også ASTM D390, AS K55, AS 1143, BS3051, BS144 og SABS 538/ 539/540. and also ASTM D390, AS K55, AS 1143, BS3051, BS144 and SABS 538/ 539/540.
An important contribution of the invention is that a true wood preservative paint which can be applied by the home owner and which dries to a clean surface has been provided; such a product was not previously available. If it was desired to coat timber in an existing installation such as a house or fence, the choice was between a preservative that did not dry completely and had an unattractive finish, or a paint that had an attractive finish and was not a true timber preparation. serving medium. Building timber and other substrates treated with agents according to the invention can be used in domestic, industrial and agricultural fabrications or prefabricated products.
Applications for the preservative according to the invention extend from specialized applications such as pressure impregnation of telegraph poles and mining, fencing, vineyard and oyster stake timbers and on to indoor and outdoor residential building products. Creosote has been used for line marking on the grass on football pitches, but this has had the disadvantage that the grass dies. The agents according to the invention can be used for this purpose, especially those containing casein, which agents do less damage to the grass than pure creosote. The agent is applied to such products by spraying, brushing, oiling, rubbing, polishing, soaking-dipping and all forms of industrial pre-preservation treatments. It is particularly important that the agent according to the invention can be applied by high-pressure, high- or low-temperature autoclave treatment.
A suitable apparatus for mixing the emulsion under ultra-high shear conditions is the "Ultra Turrax" or "Dispax-Reactor" manufactured by Janke und Kunkel K.G.

The following comparative example illustrates the difference between the agents according to the present invention and those produced according to Australian patent no. 514 897.
SAMMENLIGNINGSEKSEMPEL. COMPARISON EXAMPLE.
The preparation according to example 1 in Australian patent 514 897 (preparation A) was compared with the preparation according to example 1 (preparation B) with regard to stability against heat, addition of wood extractives, cation additions and freezing/thawing.
1. Stabilitet mot oppvarmning. 1. Stability against heating.
(i) 3 sets of 1L samples of preparation A and preparation B were placed in 1 ovens at temperatures of 50°C, 70°C and 90°C for 4 days.
Hver prøve ble så vurdert visuelt. Each sample was then assessed visually.
(ii) The above samples were subjected to further heating at the same temperatures for a further 3 days. The stability of each was again assessed visually.
2. Stabilitet mot treekstraktiver. 2. Stability against wood extractives.
Fresh-wood extractive pressed from "green" stumps of the same kind was used for preparation A and preparation B. 1, 2.5, 5.0, 7.5 and 10% based on mass of extractive were added to fresh emulsion samples and thoroughly stirred. The final mass of each sample was 100g. The contaminated samples were allowed to stand overnight before visual assessment.
3. Stabilitet mot tanalitt- C- oppløsning. 3. Stability against tanalite-C dissolution.
2% by weight of tanalite-C solution was used. The contamination of fresh emulsions was carried out as in 2. above, and the stability of each sample was judged visually.
4. Fryse- tine- stabilitet. 4. Freeze-thaw stability.
1L of fresh preparation A and 1L of fresh preparation B were placed in a freezer at a temperature of -18°C for 7 days.
The samples were allowed to thaw before the assessment of emulsion stability was carried out visually.
EKSEMPEL 103 EXAMPLE 103
1. 1.4m stumps of 8 ash-type eucalyptus stumps (including eucalyptus regnans, E. obliqua and E. eugeniodies) were sawn from the butt end of air-dried 11m logs. For the experiment, each stump was cut into 4 quadrants, numbered and allocated for treatment as shown in fig. 1.
For each quadrant, the thickness of goatwood at both ends at 3 points was determined using methyl orange indicator, and the volume that could be processed was calculated. Each sample was then double coated with impermeable epoxy resin on both sawn surfaces (1) and the top end (2) (see Fig. 1). This was to ensure that end structure penetration of the preservative was limited to the butt end (3) (the unsealed end) as well as the outer curved surface. The surface conditions for each quadrant were noted and photographed.
A Lowry scheme was used for the treatment of all quadrants with 1400 kPa pressure for 100 minutes followed by a final negative pressure of -85 kPa for 30 minutes. The treatment temperatures were 60°C and 90°C for both the emulsion prepared according to Example 1 and the HTC. Quadrant A was treated with the emulsion at 60°C, quadrant B was treated with the emulsion at 90°C; quadrants C and D were treated with HTC at 90°C and 60°C, respectively. In Australia, the commercial treatment of logs with HTC is usually carried out at 90°C or higher. As Hosli and Bosshard have pointed out in Holz als Roh-und Werkstoff 37:445-461 (1979) that there is no significant reduction in the viscosity of creosote when its temperature is increased above 60°C, part of the experiment was carried out at 60° C. Many types of emulsions can be destabilized at elevated temperature, and to test the stability of the emulsion according to example 1, it was thermally tested at 90°C for half of the total number of charges.
For calculation of retentions, the weight of each quadrant was determined before and after treatment. Although some penetration of preservative into the heartwood was observed in some samples, it was assumed that only the goatwood had been fully treated.
Observations were made regarding detachment of the preservatives, especially at the higher temperature, handling of the treated samples, and their surface appearance. Samples were taken of the emulsion before and after each loading and the samples were analyzed for water content, pigment level, pH, viscosity, rheological behavior over many shear rates/temperatures, and the microscopic structure of the emulsion. A disc (4) with a thickness of 25 mm was taken from the mid-length of each treated quadrant (5) (see fig. 2) and stored at -18°C for later visual assessment of the preservative distribution in the transverse surface. The butt section (6) of the transversely cut quadrant (5) was stored at 5°C for later assessment of the longitudinal distribution pattern. The remaining half-length (7) was exposed outdoors to assess the surface condition over a longer period of time.
Fjorten av de seksten kvadranter som var behandlet med emulsjonen, oppnådde høyere retensjoner (basert på emulsjonen) enn de tilsvarende side-tilhørende prøver behandlet med HTC Fourteen of the sixteen quadrants treated with the emulsion achieved higher retentions (based on the emulsion) than the corresponding side-matched samples treated with HTC
ved den samme temperatur (se tabell 3). at the same temperature (see table 3).
* For emulsion, the retention values are based on actual creosote, i.e. water, pigment, emulsifiers etc. are excluded in the calculation.
There was no significant difference in the retentions of creosote between the emulsion and HTC. The variability in retentions within each preservative and temperature was similar to that obtained in other experiments. There was no correlation between detectable defects in the quadrants and achieved retention rates.
The 30°C increase in treatment temperature did not result in higher retentions for any preservative. If satisfactory treatments can be achieved at the lower temperatures of commercial operations in Australia, the result would be significant savings in energy consumption. All the treated quadrants showed individual weight retentions of creosote far higher than the specified value of 134 kg/m 3 in Australian Standard 2209-1979.
TRYKKANLEGGSBETINGELSER UMIDDELBART ETTER BEHANDLING. PRESSURE CONDITIONS IMMEDIATELY AFTER TREATMENT.
HTC detachment was strong with yellow vapor halos at the cylinder mouth and quadrant surfaces. The HTC smoke persisted on the samples for hours after treatment. Breathing was made difficult and attempts to remove treated samples had to be postponed. Even at 90°C, the detachment of the emulsion in this example was much less than HTC. The smell of the emulsion in the example was not typical of creosote, nor was it particularly unpleasant. Less sludge formation in the cylinder was noted after the treatments at 90 C. The visual stability of the emulsion in this example under such severe conditions was not affected.
OVERFLATETILSTAND AV BEHANDLEDE PRØVER. SURFACE CONDITION OF TREATED SAMPLES.
The quadrants treated with the emulsion of this example appeared almost dry when removed from the treatment cylinder, especially after the 90°C treatments. Little or no grease on the quadrants made manual handling easy and safe. Initially, the quadrant surfaces treated with HTC (in the first few trials) appeared dry, but later treatments produced samples that were wet and oil-coated. This may be due to the fact that some low-boiling components in the HTC
Vann-komponenten i emulsjonen kan ha svellet tømmersubstratet og forårsaket at noen sprekker ble lukket. has evaporated during the initial tests and the oxidation and polymerization of some creosote components during the further pressure treatments have produced the impure surface as observed. The wet and smooth HTC-treated quadrants were unsafe to handle. Too much cracking on the surface of the samples after treatment with HTC was observed compared to the samples that had been treated according to the invention. The water component of the emulsion may have swelled the timber substrate and caused some cracks to close.
In the first few days after treatment, creosote bleeding was evident along large cracks and fissures in both sets of specimens. Some pigment was lost from quadrant surfaces treated according to the invention due to light rain and night frost, but they remained quite dry and of satisfactory appearance. The HTC-treated samples were wet and had an oil coating. Samples were cut from the treated quadrants and the top sections (see Fig. 2) were then exposed on supports in the open. After being exposed to the weather and wind for approx. 8 months, many of the quadrants with the emulsions according to this example showed some "crudding", especially near cracks and fissures. Most of this "crud" remained dry and shiny. Fairly severe "crudding" was observed on most of the HTC samples, and this exudate was soft and sticky in hot weather, much like a tar coating. The surfaces of samples treated according to the invention were still dry, while most of the HTD-treated samples were wet and had an oil coating.
PENETRERING OG MAKRO- FORDELING. PENETRATION AND MACRO DISTRIBUTION.
Cutting and planing creosote-treated timber at normal temperature will mobilize the preservative. Clinging and oozing of creosote on the cut surfaces will give an incorrect visual impression of the preservative's penetration and distribution. In an attempt to overcome this, all cut specimens were kept frozen for many weeks. The frozen slices (see Fig. 2) were then machine planed and immediately photographed for later visual assessment of the treated zone across the fibers. In a similar way, the longitudinal penetration pattern of the treated zone was investigated by first cutting along the frozen butt section (see Fig. 2), and one of the cut surfaces was machine planed and immediately photographed.
Both black and white photographs and color photographs of all the treated quadrants were taken, and there does not seem to be any clear difference in the macrodistribution of the preservatives in
In all samples, except for wound-affected goatwood, the full depth of goatwood penetration was visible.
ANALYSE AV EMULSJONEN IFØLGE DETTE EKSEMPEL OVER 12 CHARGERINGER. ANALYSIS OF THE EMULSION ACCORDING TO THIS EXAMPLE OVER 12 BATCHES.
(a) Vanninnhold (a) Water content
The water content of all emulsion samples was determined by the Dean and Stark method according to the STPTC CO-2 Standard. Within each charge, the water content decreased after treatment, with a greater difference in the earlier charges. Between some charges it was necessary to add fresh emulsion, and this resulted in an increase in the water content. During 12 cylinder trials, the water content decreased by 3% overall. Although no correction for water was made during these studies, it would be necessary to perform such an operation in commercial treatment plants at a predetermined water content. The change in water content had no apparent effect on the stability of the emulsion, nor the achieved retention levels in the quadrants. This result is particularly encouraging in that 6 of the 12 charges were carried out at 90°C, and it is generally accepted that high temperatures have an unfavorable effect on the stability of emulsions.
(b) Pigment (b) Pigment
There was nothing to indicate that pigment coalescence, separation or sedimentation occurred in the emulsion. The pigment content of the samples was determined by slow evaporation of the preservative in glazed porcelain crucibles followed by annealing for 3 days at 550°C. For all 12 trials, the emulsion showed no progressive loss of pigment.
(c) pH (c) pH
The pH of the alkaline anionic emulsion varied insignificantly during the course of the treatment. The results did not show a consistent decrease in pH during the 12 chargings. This is particularly encouraging since the acidity of the hardwood materials used (which is normally pH 4 - 5) has not drastically affected the alkalinity of the emulsion.
(d) Viskositet (d) Viscosity
Over 60°C viser emulsjonen Newtonsk oppførsel. The viscosity and rheology of each sample was accurately determined and investigated at 20°C, 35°C, 50°C, 70°C and 90°C over a wide range of shear rates. The resulting viscosity/temperature curves and rheograms showed little change for all 12 trials. In consideration of the processing conditions to which the emulsion was exposed, for example high temperature and shearing force under pressure in the presence of timber, its rheological behavior has so far been very satisfactory. The emulsion was designed and processed to exhibit pseudo-plastic behavior with a specific yield strength value. Above 60°C, the emulsion shows Newtonian behavior.
(e) Mikoskopi (e) Microscopy
Several samples of the emulsion were examined under a microscope. The emulsion appeared to be improved in terms of homogeneous appearance by the treatments. No visible signs of coalescence of pigment or water were observed. Fine particle size was predominant with the pigment well distributed in both phases.
EKSEMPEL 104 EXAMPLE 104
More than 300,000 L of the following emulsions produced by Koppers Australia Pty Limited at their Officer, Victoria, processing plant.
This plant has two cylinders (12.0 m x 1.1 m and 15.2 m x 1.8 m) capable of processing articles, in particular posts, up to pressures of 6900 kPa. A prototype plant for the production of creosote emulsions according to the invention has been built to operate the treatment cylinders. The facility has processed approximately 4,000 transmission poles. Furthermore, a number of railway sleepers have also been treated with the emulsion according to this example; air-dried sleepers of various species from northern New South Wales and Tasmania were treated with a Bethel program, while some sleepers were first conditioned by Boultonization and pressure treated in conventional HTC and then pressure treated with the emulsion of this example.
The commercial operations have included both Lowry and Bethel treatment programs with a wide variety of hardwood lumber materials, using a brown-pigmented (preparation A) and a white-pigmented (preparation B) emulsion. The latter provides articles with attractive, light olive colored surfaces. The air-dried sleepers that have been treated with the white preparation have developed a gray color, in no way similar to conventional creosote-treated sleepers.
Odor from both white and brown emulsion-impregnated posts and sleepers is markedly reduced.
The processing details have indicated that the customer's requirements can be met satisfactorily, especially in the case of retention and penetration criteria. A summary of selected data obtained during commercial and pilot plant operations is given in Table 4.
The handling characteristics are acceptable, even considering the small number of bleeding bars that have occurred in a total of several thousand emulsion treated bars to date. In this respect, it appears that the prevailing climatic conditions and the holding time after treatment can influence the surface quality. Also, the post stack configuration has been observed to markedly affect the surface drying properties. Odor is negligible even in hot weather.
