Description
The invention relates to a method for producing ingots of aluminum or its alloys, which ingots are intended for remelting, for e.g. production of molded parts, where a starting melt is added to a grain-finishing agent, such as e.g. boron, titanium or similar,
i form av en forlegering eller som et i smeiten reagerende salt. in the form of a prealloy or as a salt that reacts in the smelting.
It is known to refine the grain size of aluminum or aluminum alloys by adding insoluble, finely divided compounds to the aluminum melt, such as e.g. titanium, boron, titanium boride or the like, or by providing such compounds in the aluminum melt of the elements. The addition can e.g. is carried out by using prealloys containing titanium and/or boron, or by means of salts that split off titanium and/or boron, or by means of salt mixtures. It is also known that the melt must stand for a certain time after the addition of the grain-refining agent in order to achieve an optimal effect of the grain fineness. This incubation time for grain refinement is approx. 30 minutes. For this reason, casting is usually not done until these 30 minutes have elapsed. If the melt is cast before the end of this incubation period, the maximum grain fineness will not be achieved. After the maximum grain fineness of the grain-refining agent is reached, the grain-refining effect in the smelting decreases. In practice, you are therefore forced to cast as soon as possible after the end of the incubation period, as any delay results in a coarser casting structure. This is usually not possible for foundry technical reasons in the mold foundry, so that one is forced to carry out a refinishing of the forging, which, however, declines accelerating in its activity. In addition, by repeated melting of the remains from the foundry, there is a further increase in the grain size. When producing ingots intended for remelting in the smelter, it is therefore technically possible to produce unrefined ingots and deliver them to the consumer, who then carries out a grain-finishing process himself, or one produces according to the usual methods grain-refined ingots whereby one includes in the purchase that by the remelting of this material, e.g. in foundries, is not always a sufficient grain-refining effect, so that post-treatment with grain-refining agents must be carried out.
K. Strauss describes in "Applied Science in the Casting of Metals" 1970, on pages 272 - 283, a method for obtaining fine metal crystals, i.e. a refinement of the grain size. The procedure according to this article consists in cooling the casting melt immediately after the addition of fining agents for the grains in order to achieve a fine grain distribution (page 273, 4th section). It is true that with certain grain size refinement agents the effect already appears after a short time. However, upon reheating, this casting material will lose the refining effect of the grains, as is also described on page 274 in the second section.
I "The Journal of the Institute of Metals", 1951 - 1952, sidene 1-15 vises i en artikkel av A. Cibula "Grain Refinement of Aluminium Alloys by Titanium and Boron" at ved en gjeninnsmelting av støpestykker med fingjorte korn vil korn-størrelsen vokse (fig. 2, side 12). In "The Journal of the Institute of Metals", 1951 - 1952, pages 1-15 it is shown in an article by A. Cibula "Grain Refinement of Aluminum Alloys by Titanium and Boron" that in a remelting of castings with refined grains, grain- size grow (fig. 2, page 12). The relatively constant particle size in Cibula's experiments must be attributed to special experimental conditions (page 12, left column, 3rd paragraph). In normal cases, an undesired increase in particle size appears.
Furthermore, in an article by Wolfgang Thury "Bei-trag zur Kornfeinung von Aluminium" in "Zeitschrift fur Metall-kunde", 1955, pages 488 - 490, a method is indicated where the metal is heated slowly to 700 - 740°C and cast in a form of sand or cast iron after a grain finishing agent has acted for 10 minutes. In this article, however, no information has been made with regard to remelting. It is true that with the aforementioned grain finishing agents, relatively short holding times of approx. 10 minutes to achieve a complete structural improvement. However, you will still have the problem that arises from a remelt.
The task underlying the invention is to provide a method in which the above-mentioned disadvantages do not occur. According to the invention, this is achieved by grain refining agents being added to the melt immediately before or during the casting of the ingots, which grain refining agent has an incubation time for achieving the maximum grain fineness that is greater than the time required for casting, and that the casting of ingots ends before the end of the incubation period.
The advantage of the method according to the invention is that the provided ingots, even when processed by remelting, remelting or after a temperature treatment, are not exposed to any increase in grain size, but retain a very favorable structure with fine grains. In addition, the production of grain-refined ingots is simplified. The grain finishing that must be carried out after the melting of the non-pretreated ingots as well as the post-finishing of the already conventionally grain finished ingots can thus be dispensed with.
Surprisingly, it has also been shown that the grain fineness once achieved remains maintained over a longer period of time, whereby the mold foundries obtain the opportunity to extend the casting process over hours without running the risk of having to expect a significantly coarser grain structure in the casting. In addition, a significantly finer grain is generally achieved in the casting.
Sammenligningseksempel Comparative example
In an electrically heated crucible furnace with a 50 kg absorption capacity, an aluminum alloy with 3% manganese was melted, and the alloy was treated in the usual way with a grain refining agent. The grain refining agent was added as a prealloy containing 5% titanium and 1% boron in an amount of 3 kg per ton. After the incubation period had expired and the optimum grain size had been achieved, the treated aluminum alloy was cast as a green ingot. The grain size in these raw ingots was 0.3 mm. After remelting this material, an average grain size of 0.4 mm was found in the casting produced from it.
An aluminum alloy of the same composition was melted and treated with the same master alloy. Immediately after the grain refinement, i.e. within the incubation period, the alloy was cast into ingots. The grain size in these raw ingots was on average 1 mm. After the remelting of this material, the average grain diameter in the castings produced therefrom was initially measured at 0.1 mm and increased during casting within 24 hours to 0.2 mm.
