Description
Sigarettpapir. Cigarette paper.
The present invention relates to the production of paper and aims at the production of a paper which is particularly suitable for use as a wrapper for cigarettes.
With some of the types of paper currently used in cigarettes, small particles of partially burnt paper, so-called fly ash, will fall from the burning cigarette at frequent intervals. Often these particles are not completely burned, and may still be glowing or burning when they land on carpets, upholstered furniture, clothing or the like.
It has been proposed to treat or impregnate cigarette paper with various materials to produce a paper which, when used for cigarette paper, will burn without forming fly ash or embers. It has also been claimed that some of the proposed impregnation agents will reduce the amount of irritating and harmful gases in cigarette smoke. Research has, however, shown that many of the proposed materials neither improve the paper's combustion properties nor produce a more pleasant smoke. Many of them actually produce unpleasant smoke and smoke, which does not occur in smoke from cigarettes made with other paper.
It has been found that paper, which is particularly suitable for cigarettes, can be produced by treating the paper with sodium chloride, preferably in connection with a combustion-retarding component, e.g. carboxymethyl cellulose. In the past, it has been proposed to treat cigarette paper with various materials containing inorganic salts to regulate the flammability of the paper. See "Wochenblatt fur Papierfabrikation" 1941, pp. 464 and 466. But when sodium chloride is added to the paper in an amount between 0.5 and 2 percent of the paper's weight, this increases the burning rate of the paper. This increase, although not sufficient to exclude the use of sodium chloride, is unpleasant enough, and it is therefore proposed to add another material to the paper, which addition will offset the increase in the rate of burning produced by the addition of salt, without affecting the beneficial effects of its additions. In accordance with the invention, approx. 0.2 percent carboxymethyl cellulose to the sodium chloride.
The carboxymethyl cellulose can be added in amounts from 0.1 to 1.0 percent by weight. Other materials that will offset the acceleration of the burning rate when sodium chloride is added to the paper in the aforementioned ratios are gum arabic, hydroxyethyl cellulose, locust bean gum, tragacanth, sodium alginate, Methocel x 2602 (a water-soluble hydroxypropyl methylcellulose ether) and carboxymethylhydroxyethyl cellulose. These can be added in the proportion stated above, i.e. from 0.1 per cent to 1.0 per cent.
The aforementioned materials can be added to the paper in any suitable way. They can thus be applied to the paper after it has been prepared by making a solution of sodium chloride and the retarder and adding this to the paper in any suitable manner.
This can be done by e.g. to pass the paper through a bath containing the additives, or the impregnation can be added to the pulp before the paper is manufactured, after which the pulp is made into webs or sheets in the usual way.
In one embodiment of the invention, paper for cigarette production was impregnated with approx. 1 percent sodium chloride and approx. 0.2 percent carboxymethyl cellulose using rollers placed approximately in the middle of the paper machine's drying section. The solution is applied to one roller by passing it through a container of solution, and the paper is then fed between the moistened roller and the other roller. With all methods of addition, the concentration of sodium chloride and the retardant can be regulated by changing the strength of the solution. When the paper is fed between a pair of rollers, one of the rollers is covered with felt. In that case, the concentration of the additive can be further regulated by regulating the roller pressure.
Paper treated in the ways described above produces, when burned, a white ash which contracts or shrinks around the tobacco case and forms a solid band. This paper gives a more appealing appearance than that obtained from the dark gray ash that is formed when a paper that has not been specially treated is used for the cigarettes. The shrinking of the paper ash enhances the entire ash formation at the end of the cigarette and almost completely prevents the fallout of fly ash and embers.
In many cases the slight increase in the burning rate of the paper caused by the addition of sodium chloride is not noticeable. But where this increase is noticeable, the addition of the retarder will give a burning rate that corresponds to the burning rate of untreated paper. The amounts of sodium chloride and carboxymethyl cellulose indicated as examples have proven satisfactory for a particular paper type. If other types of paper are used, the amount of carboxymethyl cellulose or other retardant must be varied accordingly to give the desired burning rate.
In the final product, i.e. the cigarette, the improved combustion properties are the only thing that is noticeable between cigarettes made with paper according to the present invention and cigarettes made with other paper. In some cases, the addition of sodium chloride in an amount between 0.5% and 2% will not increase the burning rate so much that the addition of a retarder is required. But if the speed is increased, then the retarder must be used in an amount necessary to reduce the burning rate to that corresponding to untreated paper. In some cases, cigarettes made with paper impregnated with sodium chloride will produce a milder and more pleasant smoke than a similar cigarette made with untreated paper.
