In the following, reference is made to the drawings: Figure 1 is a vertical section of the burner mounted in a melting furnace; Figure 2 is a vertical section of part of a preferred burner body; Figure 3 is a horizontal section taken along the line 3-3 in Figure 2.
Air is supplied at a suitable excess pressure to the individual burner bodies 4 through pipe 29; Fuel, preferably gaseous fuel, is delivered by means of pipe 36 from distribution pipe 35 under a suitable excess pressure to the individual burner bodies 4.
In Figure 1, a burner body 4 is shown as an example inserted into a side wall opening 7 in an oven which has a refractory lining 5 surrounded by a shell 6, said burner body being held in position in the opening by means of bolts 38 which hold the mounting plate 39 for each burner body close to the shell 6 to provide an approximately gas-tight assembly. This assembly, together with the closed construction of the burner bodies, prevents the entry of air from the outside into the oven through the burner opening 7.
The burner body 4 comprises a section 50 where a stream of fuel and a stream of oxygen-containing gas are combined into a unit stream which is introduced into the ignition section 51. The burner body is also equipped with a combustion section 52 prepared from a suitable refractory material and mounted on an annular flange 53 against a shoulder 54 of the ignition section 51. The ignition section is also provided with an annular refractory ring 56 and an annular refractory sleeve 57 which is adapted together with the ring 56 to form a constriction 55 in the section 51. The rod 58 can be arranged in the constriction and a conventional electric spark plug 59 for igniting the unit current may be mounted on the side of the section 51 with the inner end of the spark plug disposed adjacent the rod 58 as shown. The combination of the constriction and the rod 58 is particularly beneficial for maintaining combustion of the unit flow in section 52, particularly when the unit flow is passed through the burner body at a high rate. The section 51 is also provided with openings 69 and 70 for taking samples of the unit flow; these openings are normally closed with plugs 71. Instead of using ignition means such as spark plugs 59, the unit current can be ignited inside the furnace, although such a method is not preferred. When starting up the oven, a fire made of wood can be lit in the oven, for example. When the combustible unit stream is blown into the furnace at a low blowing rate, the unit stream will ignite and burn back to the normal ignition point in the burner, at which point ignition means are arranged, after which the burner can be operated at the intended firing rate.
The section 50 has an annular distribution zone 60, a sleeve 61, a bend or elbow 62, a mouth plate 63 and an observation opening 64 provided with a transparent eyepiece 65. The sleeve 61, which rests on the shoulder 66 and the left end of the section 51, cooperates with the annular part 60 so that a distributor is obtained for the introduction of the smaller of the two streams to be united (as a rule the fuel stream) from the line 36 through the openings 67 into the unification chamber 68; the size and distribution of the openings 67 around the periphery of the sleeve are chosen so that the supply of fluid to the chamber is regulated. The largest flow (as a rule the air or the oxygen-containing gas) is introduced into the chamber 68 from the line 29 through the mouth in the plate 63 and the elbow 62.
During operation of the burner, it was found that the total oxygen content of unit flow samples taken at different points in the plane A—A through openings 69 and 70 were not the same. It was also found that the difference in total oxygen content for samples of the unit flow taken at the same or different points in the plane A—A could be increased or decreased by displacing the position of the orifice plate 63 in the plane of the plate across the air stream at the inlet end of the elbow 62 (see figure 3) in order to thus change the location of the mouth 72 and bring the air to strike the elbow 62 at a different angle. However, when the orifice plate 63 was moved to a position at the outlet end of the elbow 62 immediately in front of the left end of the sleeve 61 with the orifice plane perpendicular to the axis of the sleeve, relatively large differences in total oxygen content were again found in the plane A—A in the unit flow, but displacement of the orifice plate across the flow path of the largest flow had no appreciable effect on the difference in total oxygen content in the plane A—A in the unit flow. Furthermore, it was found that an existing pattern of variation in the oxygen content across the plane A—A continued to persist in the unit flow as it passed through the rest of the burner body 4.
During operation of the burner, the larger of the two streams which are to be united to the burner body is consequently led through an orifice into an elbow which leads to the unification chamber, said stream impinging on a curved surface in the elbow whereby it is deflected into the unification chamber, and the position of the mouth is displaced, in order to change the angle of impact of the stream against the curved surface and thereby regulate variations in the total oxygen content across the flow path of the unit stream blown out from the burner. It has been found that the least variation in said total oxygen content is achieved when substantially all of the largest current passing through the mouth 72 strikes the curved surface of the elbow 62 under such conditions that the smallest angle between the flow path of said current and one which preferably tangent to the part of the curved surface against which the current strikes is over 45°, and whereby the smallest angle with a bang to the part of the curved surface against which a larger part of the current strikes is over 35°. Thus, as shown in Figure 2, the line 73 drawn from the left side of the orifice 72 parallel to the longitudinal axis 74 of the inlet portion of the elbow 62 represents the left side of the flow path for the largest current. As shown, the angle between the line 73 and the tangent to the curved surface where the latter is cut by the line 73 is greater than 45° (shown by the angle B), and the angle C between the muzzle axis 74 and the tangent to the curved surface where the latter is cut by the muzzle axis 74 is greater than 65°. Furthermore, it was found that the distance between the openings 67 for the supply of fuel and the mouth plate 63 affects the sensitivity of the regulation achieved by displacing the mouth plate 63, whereby when this distance is increased, said sensitivity is reduced. Preferably, all openings 67 are placed within a distance of approx. 30 cm from the muzzle plate, measured along the line 77 drawn along the largest inner radius of the elbow, and preferably as close to the muzzle plate as possible.
As shown in figure 1, each of the lines 29 which lead the largest current (air) to the burner bodies 4 is provided with a valve 80 for regulating the amount of air which is released to the burner body under excess pressure. Likewise, each of the lines 36 which carry the smallest current (fuel) to the burner bodies is provided with a valve 81 for regulating the quantity of fuel which is delivered to the burner body under excess pressure. Also, as shown in figure 1, each of the lines 36 can be provided with a conventional diaphragm-regulated valve 85 regulated by a conventional diaphragm member 86 which is provided with a diaphragm 87. Each of the diaphragm members is also provided with a pipe 88 which leads from the inside of the line 29 to the space above the diaphragm in the diaphragm member so that it transfers the pressure of the air in the line 29 to the diaphragm. Such an arrangement, which uses excess pressure on fuel and air which is delivered to the unification chamber 68, is preferred as it is thereby achieved that the fuel in the line 36 in front of the valve 81 is kept at the same pressure as the air in the line 29 in front of the orifice plate 63, whereby the ratio delivered to the burner between fuel and air, in particular by changing the burner's degree of firing, can more easily be regulated to a desired value than by the regulation achieved by an arrangement where the smallest current is introduced into the chamber 68 by blowing in. Thus, when, for example, the degree of firing of the furnace is to be increased, the pressure of the air in the line 29 in the flow in front of the mouth plate 63 is increased by opening the valve 80. The diaphragm member 86 automatically gives the same pressure in the line 36 in the flow in front of the valve 81 so that the same ratio between fuel and air is maintained in the unit flow without changing the position of the valve 81.
