Abstract
Description
Polymeerfolie met verbeterde radiometrische eigenschappenPolymer film with improved radiometric properties
The invention relates to polymer films with improved radiometric properties, consisting of one or more layers, at least one of the layers being provided with an additive.
Such films are particularly suitable for use in agriculture and horticulture, for example as a tunnel film or as a covering for greenhouses. However, they can also be used for covering halls, storage areas, sports fields, etc.
In agriculture and horticulture and in particular in horticulture, people are increasingly using foils. The crops are covered with foil to ensure a better microclimate, in order to achieve better, faster and more balanced plant growth. The ultimate goal is a better yield in an economically responsible manner.
Temperature and light intensity are two important factors that play a role in obtaining the right microclimate.
If the temperature is too great during the day and night, as a result of too much sunlight during the day and too much cooling during the night, the plants will grow less favorably due to a resistance built up by the plant against the temperature changes. The result of this is that the plants remain behind in growth.
It is certain that light in the growth process in plants fulfills a key function.
In addition to light, growth also depends on a number of other factors, such as temperature, humidity, nutrition and carbon dioxide.
If we take a closer look at the light with regard to plant growth, it turns out that the light from the sun can be distinguished in three important areas, i.e. the ultraviolet light, visible light and infrared light.
The infrared light can be divided into the near infrared, middle infrared and far infrared.
The near infrared is primarily responsible for global warming. Part of the generated heat is released back into the environment and this with a lower energy, i.e. with a longer wavelength.
It is known from Plastic Culture, No. 59, September 1983, pp. 3-12, Raviv and Allingham, that diffuse light is beneficial for regular plant growth. Moreover, it appears that diffuse light also has the advantage that the plants are not damaged, which may be the case with too high light intensity.
It is further known from Plastic Culture, No. 79, 1988 / -3, pp. 4-14, Hancock, that certain additives in low-density polyethylene have a favorable effect on the microclimate in greenhouses with regard to obtaining diffuse light and producing a favorable thermal effect in the greenhouses.
According to the aforementioned article, the additive is aluminum silicate in the form of calcined kaolin, calcium carbonate, talc and kaolin clays.
Surprisingly, it has been found that when a polymer film as an additive contains mica, it produces an excellent polymer film with good radiometric properties. In this case, radiometric properties are understood to mean absorbing long-wave I.R. radiation, reflecting nearby I.R. and scattering the incoming visible light. This basically means that the incoming light is optimally utilized with regard to the climate under the foil.
(polyte-trafluoretheen), P.V.D.P. (polyvinylideenfluoride) en P.V.C. (polyvinylchloride).Such a film is particularly suitable for use in agriculture and horticulture and especially when the film is prepared from a low-density polyethylene or a vinyl ester copolymer such as EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer). Other examples of polymers that can be added according to the invention are fluoropolymers such as P.T.E.F. (polytetrafluoroethylene), P.V.D.P. (polyvinylidene fluoride) and P.V.C. (polyvinyl chloride).
When mica, i.e., potassium aluminum silicate (KAl2 [AlSi3O10] (OH) 2), which is an inorganic crystalline substance, is used, the incident sunlight is evenly diffused into the polymer with the special feature, thereby practically no loss of total light transmittance occurs.
It is noted that mica is a natural product which is incorporated into the polymer in finely ground form. For this purpose, the polymers and mica are first mixed, for example, in a mixer, after which the mixture is transferred to an extruder, in which the polymer is melted in a first step. Usually, however, both components are dosed simultaneously in an extruder. In addition, a thorough mixing takes place between the solid (mica) and the molten polymer mass. Due to the screws of the extruder, pressure is applied to the mixture to promote good distribution of the mica in the polymer. The virtually homogeneous mixture obtained in this way is then pressed through a special mold, after which the mixture is cut into granules of about 2 to 5 mm after cooling. The polymer granules thus obtained, which are considered to be concentrates, consist of a polymer with a certain concentration of mica. This concentrate is then diluted with a known concentration of mica to the desired concentration, after which the mixture is processed into foil in another extrusion line. In specific cases, the mica can be added directly to the film extrusion line as a powder.
To obtain good radiometric properties, it is advantageous if mica has been treated with at least one metal oxide. Due to interference, such a metal oxide appears to reflect part of the near infrared, so that the temperature under the foil will rise less high. Such treated micas have been found to retain the thermal effect of the untreated mica, while also generating even greater scattering of the incoming light.
Suitable metal oxides for the mica are TiO 2, Fe 2 O 3, Cr 2 O 3, SnO 2, ZrO 2 and other suitable metal oxides, the mica being provided with one metal oxide or with more than one of the aforementioned metal oxides.
To obtain good radiometric properties, the film contains from 0.1 to 30% by weight of the additive and preferably between 0.5 and 2.5% by weight.
Verrassenderwijs is gebleken, dat bij toepassing van een folie die ca. 1 gew.% behandelde mica bevat, van het type IRIODINr 9231 een verbetering van het thermisch effect tussen 7 en 25 μ van 25% optreedt bij een verstrooiing van het licht van 55%.Surprisingly, it has been found that when using a film containing approximately 1% by weight of treated mica, of the type IRIODINr 9231, an improvement of the thermal effect between 7 and 25 μ of 25% occurs with a scattering of the light of 55%. .
Various IriodinR-type treated micas are commercially available using the aforementioned oxides in various proportions.
If the concentrations of treated mica in the film are too great, the total light transmission of the film decreases, because the treated mica also reflects the visible light, which may be unfavorable for certain applications.
For optimum effect, it is important that the additive is distributed homogeneously in the polymer.
It has been found that with some types with the correct interference, the light transmission in the part important for plant growth is little or not affected.
In addition, it appears that mica treated with a Ti02 layer ensures permanent UV absorption up to 360 μ, which has a favorable effect for certain crops.
Foils containing metal oxide-treated mica lead to a better controlled microclimate, as they both partially reflect the incoming heat and avoid excessive temperatures, while also absorbing the reflected heat, preventing excessive cooling in the greenhouses.
Depending on the treatment, certain colors can be filtered out from the spectrum by interference, which offers prospects for stimulating certain plant species or stimulating a growth process of a certain plant culture.
This stimulation of the growth process can also be obtained if the treated mica is incorporated in a bottom cover or substrate foil. In such a case, the reflected light spectrum, which is obtained after interference, has a positive effect on the crop.
The invention is further illustrated by the following non-limiting examples, wherein untreated mica is used in example I and mica treated in example II.
VOORBEELD IEXAMPLE I
Onbehandelde micaUntreated mica
Research has shown that untreated mica in a polymer film absorbs an important part of the reflected heat and thus keeps the heat in the greenhouse. It has been found that a 1.7% mica content in, for example, low-density polyethylene gives an improvement in thermal effect of 28.5% between 7 and 25 μ. Such a foil can scatter the light for 39%.
VOORBEELD IIEXAMPLE II
Behandelde micaTreated mica
When using a low-density polyethylene film incorporating about 1 wt.% Treated mica of the type IRIODINr 9231, a 25% improvement in the thermal effect between 7 and 25 µ occurs at a light scattering of 55%.
The above examples show that when a mica treated with a metal oxide is used, a greater light scattering takes place than when using untreated mica.
