Abstract

The arrangement is intended for ensuring the buoyancy of an inflatable fender such as used to protect a pier etc from impact damage by a mooring vessel. A number of (much) smaller inflatable buoyancy members are inserted in the fender so that they are freely movable therein. These members maintain buoyancy in the event pressure in the fender is lost through damage. The members may be inflated to a lightly higher pressure than the fender. They, or the fender, may be contained in a net to prevent any members escaping through a tear in the damaged fender. The arrangement ensures that the fender can be recovered when damaged.

Method for rendering a gas or air-filled fender unsinkable.

The invention relates to rendering the gas or air-filled fenders unsinkable by means of insertable and freely movable gas-or air-filled elastic floats.

Floating fenders may consist of a regular or irregularly shaped outer jacket containing one or more air chambers or chambers filled with porous material.

It is also possible to make an entirely solid fender from EPDM, up to a specific gravity of just under 1 filled with CF carbon black, as known from Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company patent application NL-A-7416836, or a total microporous fender with a specific gravity of less than 1.

Fenders in which the buoyancy is obtained by reducing the specific gravity by installing relatively large cavities have the great advantage over the aforementioned types of better transportability, the more so since folding is possible.

However, air-filled or gas-filled fenders will sink if a strong collision causes both cracks and the attachment to be broken.

The invention now provides the possibility to provide a guarantee for a permanent buoyancy in a simple manner, and using conventional, as already existing equipment, so that this type of fender is less limited in terms of its applicability.

The invention is characterized in that inflatable plastic or rubber bags or spherical bladders are introduced into existing or new to be manufactured inflatable fenders, which are pressurized before or afterwards with air or gas which slightly exceeds the operating pressure of the fender.

The amount of floats to be introduced is related to the weight of the fender and the fittings, but leaves enough space in the fender for free movement of these floats.

For a sufficient anti-sinking protection of an EPDM fender with a length of 5 meters and a diameter of 2.5 meters and with a wall thickness of 1.5 cm, where the fender is externally provided with a net, a filling with 250 to 350 liters of bladders to be introduced, enough to keep the fender above water after the fender has turned 45, so that storage is possible.

Only about 1.4% of the space in the fender is occupied by these bladders.

In the event of a collision, the blows generated by the generated 50 pressure wave are ejected to a less stressed place and 81 02 833 -2-3 * * * * '* * will not be damaged or only for a small number of the total of the blows.

The pressure in the bladders, even with slight porosity of the bladders after aging, cannot fall below the pressure in the 5 fender, approximately 0.5 ATO, so that the operation of this device can be guaranteed over a long period of time.
