Abstract

The centrifugal pump has one or more impellers mounted on a shaft, and means for counteracting thrust loads on the shaft using a component fixed to it and subjected to the pressure of the medium handled. A bearing (3) accurately locates the shaft (1) in the axial direction, while the sleeve (8) has one side in a chamber (15) in which there is high pressure, this chamber being pref. openly connected to the high-pressure side of the last impeller. The other side of the sleeve is in a lower-pressure chamber (16) pref. openly connected to the chamber in front of the first impeller or to atmosphere. The high-pressure chamber is sealed off from the low-pressure one by a slipring-type seal (12-14) and the surface area of the sleeve is such that the pressures acting on its working faces counteract the thrust loads on the impellers or nearly so.
