Abstract

A machine for producing rods, blocks and other shaped pieces froma dough-like material to be made into potato chips of the French-fried type, etc., has a cylinder in which a plunger is moved up and down. The bottom end of the cylinder is closed by an extrusion plate and below this there is a cutter. There is a feeder for powder into the cylinder as well as a pipe connection from a fluid reservoir, and above the plunger ther is an agitator. This mixes the powder and fluid to a consistency which will flow and which when it is transferred below the plunger hardens to an extrudable dough. The plunger has a mantle on its circumference which as it moves upwards comes away from the cylinder wall, whilst as the plunger moves downwards, it presses, making a seal against the cylinder inner wall. Alternatively the plunger may have >=1 check valves which allow the passage of the dough downwards as the plunger rises and prevent its return as the plunger descends. Machine is more compact and more easily operated than one in which the dough is mixed separately and the cylinder is detached and fitted to the mixer for filling.
