Abstract

Aeration of a liquid, e.g. effluent, with small air bubbles by (a) setting up a flow of liq. in a pipe to which a stream of gas is added to produce a two-phase fluid stream with a linear velocity approaching sonic velocity as determined by the volume ratio of the gas and liq. and the static pressure, (b) constricting the stream of two-phase fluid near the place where the gas is introduced, by means of a Venturi pipe, to a sufficient extent to achieve sonic velocity at the zone of maximum constriction, (c) gradually expanding the two-phase stream downstream from the zone of max. constriction so as to increase the velocity and bring about supersonic flow and an associated shock wave in order to disintegrate the gas phase and form small bubbles.
