Abstract
Cracks or holes in cast-iron parts are repaired by (a) decarburising or Fe-plating the part, at least in the area to be repaired; (b) Sn-plating this area; (c) fixing a metal plate tinned on both sides to the area to be repaired; (d) heating the part to ca. 160 degrees C and filling the gap between the metal plate and the cast-iron part with Pb or a Pb/Sb alloy; and (e) filling the crack or hole with Pb or Pb/Sb alloy. This process is esp. useful for repairing exhaust gas chambers of turbine-compressor systems for marine diesel engines. The cracks or holes are sealed without impairing the heat-transfer properties of the cast-iron part; the corrosion resistance of the repair is better than that of the original cast iron.
