Abstract

A lactam-contg. sulphuric acid medium is first mixed with (NH4)2SO4-contg. aq. soln. which are obtained as by-products in known synthesis of hydroxyl-ammoniumsulphate (I) on basis of reduction of NH4NO2 with SO2, and in working-up of such solns. of (I) in oximation of ketones to ketoximes; whereupon the lactam-free aq. acidic soln. of (NH4)2SO4 is split by heat-treatment, after extraction and opt. further concn., and SO2-contg. gas is recovered. Formation of (NH4)2SO4 as undesirable by-product is avoide. SO2 as by-product is advantageous for use in mfre. of H2SO4 and (I).
