1286427 Purifying lactams FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER AG 19 April 1971 [26 March 1970] 24018/71 Heading C2C In a process for the removal of at least one oxime from at least one oxime-containing lactam obtained by the catalytic rearrangement of an oxime in the gaseous phase, sulphur dioxide is introduced at a temperature of from 70‹ to 170‹ C. into the lactam until the concentration of the sulphur dioxide is at least 1 mol. per mol. of the oxime; and on completion of the reaction, the excess sulphur dioxide is removed and the lactam is recovered by distillation. Sodium hydroxide is preferably added before the distillation.
