Abstract

A rigid riser pipe extending from an offshore wellhead passes through a surface vessel and is supported by a number of constant tension winches whose cables pass over idler pulleys on respective towers on the vessel. At one point where the riser pipe extends through the vessel it is restrained against lateral but not longitudinal movement. The idler pulleys are upwardly biased.
