Abstract
1,012,341. Discharge lamps. PLASMADYNE CORPORATION. Sept. 7, 1962, No. 34376/62. Heading H1D. A pulsed or continuous arc between electrodes 17 is confined and stabilized in a path 32 by a vortical flow of gas which is admitted tangentially to the arc chamber 21 through an opening 31 and is discharged through an axial passage 24 in one or both of the electrodes. The gas may be argon or helium under substantial pressure and may be discharged to the atmosphere or re-circulated through the arc chamber. The insulating block 12 may be of transparent plastic or may be opaque and provided with a window. The electrodes 17 may be cooled, and the chamber 21 may be other than cylindrical, e.g. conical.
