Description
Chain saw
The invention relates to a chain saw for sawing through an object, in particular an object located in or under water such as a ship, drilling platform, bridge, pipeline, etc.
5 Such a chain saw is known from WO 01/76797.
The known chain saw has links that are provided with a machining surface coating that comprises a hard phase of carbides, nitrides and/or borides and a binder of Co and/or Ni.
10 The machining surface coating of the chain saw of the prior art is applied by brazing, hard soldering or welding.
It is an object of the invention to provide a chain saw in accordance with the preamble, which is easy to manu-15 facture at low costs and which endures the harsh circumstances at which the chain saw of the invention may be employed in sawing operations which primarily take place under the water level. It is known that sawing for instance part of a shipwreck is a laborious task which imposes high demands on 20 the chain saw that is used for this purpose. It is an object of the invention further to improve the known chain saw in that it is capable to better withstand the conditions that are prevalent when sawing such a shipwreck.
The chain saw of the invention is characterized by 25 one or more of the appended claims.
In a first aspect the chain saw of the invention is characterized in that the machining surface coating is selected to comprise tungsten-carbide granules that are melted and subsequently solidified on the chain saw. Surprisingly it 30 is possible to work with a chain saw that is made of standard steel, although it is of course also possible to apply high grade steels of high strength and durability.
To promote the chain saw's effectiveness, it is preferable that the tungsten-carbide granules are melted on 35 the chain saw in the presence of metal additives. It is particularly useful that the metal additives are selected parti- 2 cles from the group comprising nickel, chromium, borium.
A further advantageous aspect of the chain saw of the invention is that the chain saw is a link chain with links that hook transversely into one another, and wherein 5 the machining surface coating is provided on said links.
With the chain saw of the invention it is possible to apply sawing cuts that are provided with a notable bend, which may be advantageous in particular circumstances.
The invention will hereafter be further elucidated 10 with reference to a drawing.
In the drawing a single figure is shown of a chain saw of the invention that is provided with interconnected chain links.
Fig. 1 shows a part of a chain saw 1 for sawing 15 through an object, in particular an object which is submerged in the water, such as a sunken ship or another object. The chain saw 1 has chain links 2 that are provided with a machining surface coating 3 that comprises a hard phase of carbides, nitrides and/or borides. Said machining surface coat-20 ing 3 in particular is selected to comprise tungsten-carbide granules 4 that are melted and subsequently solidified on the chain links 2.
The tungsten-carbide granules 4 are melted on the chain links 2 in the presence of metal additives, which are 25 selected particles from the group comprising nickel, chromium, borium.
Preferably the chain saw 1 has chain links 2 that hook transversely into one another, as is clearly shown in fig. 1.
