Abstract

In the manufacture of metal working and like tools, a layer of powdered tungsten carbide or other high melting point carbide is melted on to a foundation metal. The foundation metal may be heated to red heat and a mixture of tungsten carbide and a flux such as calcium fluoride applied to the surface in a layer of about 3mm. A flame such as the metallic hydrogen flame having a temperature of not less than 3000 DEG C. is employed to melt the surface of the foundation metal and to melt the carbide, a homogeneous layer thereby being formed. The carbides may be nitrogenized before the operation, preferably by the action of ammonia at a temperature of 500 DEG C. for about 100 hours, and are preferably previously sintered and again disintegrated. In a modification of the process, pieces of sintered carbide may be placed at intervals on the surface, and the spaces therebetween filled with molten carbide.
