Abstract

The present invention discloses a twin tube type shock absorber comprises an outer shell (1) having a closed end portion (2) and an open end portion, a cylinder (4) disposed coaxially within the outer shell (1) to provide an annular space (5) between the cylinder (4) and the outer shell (1), a base valve (7) fixed to an open end portion of the cylinder (4) adjacent the closed end portion (2) of the outer shell (4), a piston (8) slidably housed in the cylinder (4), a rod (9) connected to the piston (8), extending from the piston (8) through the open end portion of the outer shell (1), a rod guide (15) disposed between the outer shell (1) and the rod (9), having a bushing (16) in contact with the rod (9), and a seal (10) disposed at the open end portion of the outer shell (1) for sealing around the rod (9) so as to prevent oil/gas leakage and foreign particular from entering the shock absorber, and wherein the seal (10) includes a first sealing means having an upwardly (12) and a downwardly (11) extending annular protrusion which sealingly engages the rod (9) and a second sealing means having an annular projection (13) which sealingly engages the inner surface of the outer shell (1), characterised in that the seal has no means for retaining the protrusions (11, 12) onto the rod (9) and the internal diameter of the seal (10) at the tip of the protrusions (11, 12) is less than the external diameter of the rod (9) by an amount between 0.18mm to 0.7mm.
