The lubricant compositions described herein provide utility in electric vehicle gear oils, particularly electric vehicle transmission fluids, and provide improved traction coefficient properties in use.
An electric vehicle is a vehicle that is propelled using one or more electric motors. Electric vehicles may be fully electric (also known as pure-electric or all-electric vehicles) or hybrid in nature (in hybrid electric vehicles, propulsion is sometimes provided by hydrocarbon-derived fuel and same can be achieved from alternative means). Electric vehicles also include range-extended electric vehicles, where the vehicle is powered by an electric motor and a plug-in battery, but the vehicle is also used only to assist in charging the battery and is It includes an auxiliary combustion engine that is not used as a source of propulsion. Gear oils are a subclass of lubricants and typically contain lubricant base stock (or base oil) as their main component. The choice of lubricant base stock used in a lubricant can have a significant impact on properties such as oxidation and thermal stability, volatility, low temperature fluidity, solvability of additives, contaminants and degradation products, and traction. More particularly, it is traditionally taught in the industry that traction coefficient is an inherent property of the base stock fluid (i.e., based on the chemical composition of the base oil) and that traction coefficient is not affected by additives. It is widely known in the industry that the viscosity of the base stock fluid determines the traction coefficient of the lubricant in use.
미국 석유 협회(API: American Petroleum Institute)는 현재 5개 그룹의 윤활제 베이스 스톡을 정의한다(문헌[API Publication 1509]).The American Petroleum Institute (API) currently defines five groups of lubricant base stocks (API Publication 1509).
Group I, Group II and Group III are mineral oils classified by the amount of saturates and sulfur they contain and their viscosity index. Table 1 below illustrates this API classification for Group I, Group II, and Group III.
[표 1][Table 1]
Group I base stocks are solvent refined mineral oils, which are the least expensive base stocks to produce. It offers satisfactory oxidation stability, volatility, low temperature performance and traction properties and has particularly good dissolution capacity for additives and contaminants.
Group II base stocks are mostly hydrotreated mineral oils, which typically provide improved volatility and oxidation stability compared to Group I base stocks. The use of Group II stocks has grown to approximately 30% of the US market.
Group III (including Group III+) base stocks are heavily hydrotreated mineral oils, which can be produced through wax or paraffin isomerization. It is known to have better oxidation stability and volatility than Group I and Group II base stocks, but has a limited range of commercially available viscosities. Group III+ base stocks are derived from GTL (gas-to-liquid) fuel streams.
Group IV base stocks differ from Groups I through III in that they are synthetic base stocks, such as polyalphaolefins (PAO). PAO has good oxidation stability, volatility, and low pour point. Disadvantages include the moderate solubility of polar additives, for example anti-wear additives.
Group V base stocks are all base stocks not included in Groups I through Group IV. Examples include alkyl naphthalenes, alkyl aromatics, vegetable oils, esters, polycarbonates, silicone oils, and polyalkylene glycols.
The rapid movement toward electrification of passenger vehicles has surpassed the understanding and specifications of current gear oil specifications by OEMs and regulators. Current generations of hybrid and electric vehicles still use standard automatic transmission fluid (ATF) formulations that are not specifically designed for these applications. Due to the rapid advancements in electric vehicle technology, ATF base fluids and ad-pack, current gear oils do not meet the dynamic requirements of OEMs. Additionally, because EV's electric motors are so efficient, any loss of gear lubricant in the EV powertrain system can be significant. Reduction in energy loss will provide improved battery life in EVs in use, meaning EVs will require less frequent charging as battery range increases.
Additionally, thermal management of components in electric vehicles is becoming increasingly important. In automotive batteries, thermal management is very important to ensure safe driving and use. There is currently a lot of research being done investigating immersion cooled battery systems, which place the battery in direct contact with a dielectric cooling fluid. Therefore, fluids with high thermal properties, such as heat capacity and thermal conductivity, are required for these applications. Cooling of electronic power systems, such as electric motors and transmissions, is also required to make them function effectively without overheating. Removing excess heat from the electronic system also helps reduce electrical resistance and thus improve engine efficiency. Accordingly, the thermal properties of lubricant compositions suitable for use in electric vehicles will differ significantly from those developed for use in automotive combustion engines.
Therefore, despite continued advances in lubricant technology for transmissions and gearboxes in internal combustion engines, hybrids and electric vehicles, there remains a need for lubricant formulations with improved energy efficiency over the life of the lubricant. More particularly, there is a need for lubricant technology optimized and tailored to meet the requirements of electric vehicle gearboxes, whose requirements are different from those of traditional combustion engines. Therefore, new base oils that provide high performance for electric engines (particularly low traction and high thermal conductivity) but are commercially viable for the electric passenger vehicle market are still actively sought.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a lubricant composition suitable for use in gearboxes of electric vehicles, which provides improved low traction forces and thus minimizes energy losses. 1. Example

[표 1][Table 1]
2. 시험2. Test
The following tests were used to evaluate the properties of exemplary base oils:
2.1 Oxidation stability was measured using an Anton Paar RapidOxy machine. A 4 g sample is placed in a pressure vessel, charged with oxygen at 700 kPa and heated to 140°C. The time it takes for the pressure to drop by 10% is measured as Oxidative Induction Time (OIT). This provides a relative measure of the resistance of the tested sample to oxidative degradation; the longer the OIT, the greater the oxidative stability of the sample.
2.2 Kinematic viscosity (KV) was measured at 100°C and 40°C using an Anton Paar SVM viscometer. The viscosity index (VI) of the tested material is also provided. Higher VI values make the material more stable over a range of temperatures.
2.3 Thermal conductivity was measured using Thermtest THW-L2 based on the hot wire transient method. To create a reliable average, 10 data points were collected at temperatures of 40°C and 80°C, with a 5-minute interval between each data point to allow the fluid to stabilize. The test power was set so that the measured output power was 70 to 90 mW, the temperature rise was ~3°C, and the test time was set to 1 second.
2.4 Pour point testing was performed on the ISL Mini Pour Point 5G to determine the minimum temperature at which the material continues to flow, which is associated with ASTM D97 and D2500.
2.5 Traction force was measured using a mini traction machine (MTM) and the test was performed on a PCS MTM 1. All components required to set up the MTM, as well as standard test specimens provided by PCS (detailed in Table 2 below), were sonicated three times for 15 minutes in heptane using a Camsonix C940 ultrasonic bath, after each sonication. After discharging the heptane, it was refilled. All parts were dried using nitrogen prior to assembly in the MTM. The test profile runs from 0 to 100% slide to roll ratio (SRR) at 16 N, taking 41 data points at a given temperature to generate a traction curve. This is repeated at 40°C, 60°C, 75°C, 100°C and 120°C to demonstrate performance over a wide range of temperatures. Test parameters are detailed in Table 3 below.
2.6 NOACK volatility at 250°C is measured according to standard test method ASTM D5800. Since electric vehicles do not operate at such high temperatures, a modified test based on ASTM D5800 but at a temperature of 200°C was also performed, providing NOACK volatility at 200°C measurement.
(RR1006).2.7 Hydrolytic stability measured over 15 days (RR1006).
250 g of oil and 25 g of water are mixed in a conical flask and equipped with a water trap (airlock). It is placed in an oven at 90C for 15 days, and the acid value is tested once every few days.
2.8 Seal swell test. Samples are impregnated with seals of various materials and tested at 100°C for two weeks.

3. Test data
The sample materials detailed in Table 1, and commercially available base oils from Group III and Group IV detailed above were subjected to the tests outlined in Section 2 above.
[표 4][Table 4]
Exemplary samples of the present invention have physical properties that make them useful as additives for use in lubricant compositions for use in electric vehicles. In particular, the balance between kinematic viscosity (KV) and thermal conductivity is particularly desirable for use in the powertrain of electric vehicles. More particularly, the sample designated as DE10766 provides a material particularly suitable for use in electric vehicles, comprising a low kinematic viscosity material of only 2.9 cSt at 100°C, an excellent viscosity index (VI) and very low NOACK regarding its viscosity (NOACK data is provided in Table 5 below). The pour point of DE10766 is also acceptable for use in electric vehicle lubricant applications.
[표 5][Table 5]
Sample DE10766 was also tested further to take into account its electrical breakdown voltage, an important consideration for fluids suitable for use in electric vehicles. The breakdown voltage values were lower than expected.
[표 6][Table 6]
The hydrolytic stability of sample DE10766 is excellent and changes by only 0.38 AV units over 15 days; This is surprising for a mono ester, and the use of Guerbet alcohol is believed to provide some resistance to hydrolysis, although the reasons for this are not yet understood.
Compatibility with engine seals is another important characteristic of any additive used in electric vehicle powertrains. Sample DE10766 was also tested to approach seal swelling over a two week period. In general, low viscosity materials are highly polar and will significantly swell the elastomer. As a comparative additive, Priolube 3959 (a commercial lubricant additive diester with a KV at 100°C of 2.5 cSt) was also tested. Since a small amount of seal swelling is desirable, the results are favorable over DE10766, where Priolube 3959 swells the elastomer to a larger, undesirable degree. The result of 1% swelling in FKM means that despite its low viscosity DE10766 can be used at high throughput.
[표 7][Table 7]
At 40°C, both samples tested had significantly lower traction than both Group III and Group IV base oils, and this trend continued at 60°C and 75°C, although the sample rated 731-90 at 100°C had a lower traction than both Group III and Group IV base oils. Slide to roll ratios begin to exhibit high traction coefficients. It is believed that the very low viscosity of the 731-90 sample (KV at 100° C. of 2.2 cSt) is the reason and that the sample is not able to maintain a lubricant film under low slide-roll ratio conditions. Samples marked as 731-84 at 120°C also show an increase in traction coefficient; The reason is unknown as sample 731-84 has a higher viscosity than DE10766 which can maintain low traction levels even at high temperatures, it would be expected that a higher viscosity material would perform better. However, since in any case the operating temperature of electric vehicles is typically less than 100° C., all exemplary samples made therefrom are believed to be useful for use in electric vehicle powertrains. More particularly, DE10766 appears to be an excellent choice for use in reducing traction in electric vehicles. It is low viscosity, low polarity, has excellent thermal properties, low traction properties and elastomer compatibility. Additionally, other exemplary samples tested herein show that samples containing Isofol 12 and Isofol 16 preferably provide very low traction forces.
