Description
The present invention relates to a positive electrode active material for lithium secondary batteries and a method of manufacturing the same.
Lithium secondary batteries, which can be repeatedly charged and discharged, are attracting attention as an alternative to fossil energy. Lithium secondary batteries have been mainly used in traditional handheld devices such as mobile phones, video cameras, and power tools. However, recently, its application fields are gradually increasing, including electric vehicles (EV, HEV, PHEV), large-capacity power storage devices (ESS), and uninterruptible power supply systems (UPS).
A lithium secondary battery consists of an electrode assembly that gathers unit cells with a structure in which a positive electrode plate coated with an active material on a current collector and a negative electrode plate are arranged with a separator in between, and an exterior material that seals and stores this electrode assembly together with an electrolyte solution, that is, a battery case. is provided. Lithium composite transition metal oxides are used as cathode materials for lithium secondary batteries, and among them, lithium cobalt oxide of LiCoO 2 , lithium manganese oxide (LiMnO 2 or LiMn 2 O 4 , etc.), lithium iron phosphate compound (LiFePO 4 ), or LiNiO 2 and the like are mainly used. In addition, as a method to improve the low thermal stability of LiNiO 2 while maintaining its excellent reversible capacity, a nickel-manganese-based lithium composite metal oxide in which part of nickel is replaced with manganese, which has excellent thermal stability, and NCM-based lithium in which manganese and cobalt are substituted. Complex transition metal oxides, NCA-based lithium complex transition metal oxides substituted with cobalt and aluminum, and NCMA-based lithium complex transition metal oxides substituted with cobalt, manganese, and aluminum are used.
The cathode active material currently in use is usually a cathode active material coated solely with boron (B). Coating the surface of the positive electrode active material with boron is intended to suppress side reactions with the electrolyte solution by protecting the surface of the positive active material with Li-B-O material, but there is a limitation in that it cannot be completely suppressed. Moreover, for high-Ni cathode materials with a high Ni content of over 80%, long-term life stability due to side reactions with electrolyte is an issue that must be overcome, so a solution is required.
Preferably, the lithium source is LiOH·H 2 O and the precursor may be Ni 0.88 Co 0.05 Mn 0.07 (OH) 2 + Al(OH) 3 .
More preferably, the lithium source may be LiOH·H 2 O and the precursor may be Ni 0.88 Co 0.05 Mn 0.07 (OH) 2 + Al(OH) 3 + ZrO 2 .
The water washing step may be performed by mixing the fired product:water content at a weight ratio of 50 to 200% and stirring.

1 is a flowchart of a method for manufacturing a positive electrode active material according to the present invention. A method for manufacturing a positive electrode active material for a lithium secondary battery according to the present invention will be described with reference to FIG. 1 as follows.
The positive electrode active material powder for coating must first be prepared. This positive electrode active material powder may have a composition represented by the following formula (1).
1][Formula 1]
LiaNibCocXdYeZfO2 Li a N i b Co c X d Y e Z f O 2
0.9≤a≤1.12, 0.8≤b≤1.0, 0.0≤c≤0.2, 0.0≤d≤0.2, 0.0≤e≤0.2, 0.0≤f≤0.2, a+b+c+d+e=1이다.)(In Formula 1, Contains one or more selected from the group consisting of P, S and La, 0.9≤a≤1.12, 0.8≤b≤1.0, 0.0≤c≤0.2, 0.0≤d≤0.2, 0.0≤e≤0.2, 0.0≤ f≤0.2, a+b+c+d+e=1.)
This positive electrode active material powder can be manufactured and prepared through the following steps.
먼저 리튬 소스와 전구체를 혼합 후 열처리하는 1차 소성 단계를 수행한다(가소성, 단계 S10).First, a first calcination step is performed in which the lithium source and the precursor are mixed and then heat treated (plastic calcination, step S10).
For example, LiOH·H 2 O in the form of hydrate can be used as the lithium source.
The precursor may be prepared by mixing and reacting an aqueous solution and a basic solution of a nickel compound, a cobalt compound, a manganese compound, etc. as raw materials to obtain a reaction precipitate, followed by drying and heat treating the precipitate. For example, the precursor is a high-content Ni-based lithium transition metal oxide, and the nickel content of the precursor may be 80 mol% or more based on the total number of moles of transition metal. As an example, the positive electrode active material for a lithium secondary battery can be manufactured as an NCM-based lithium composite transition metal oxide.
As another example, the lithium source may be LiOH·H 2 O and the precursor may be Ni 0.88 Co 0.05 Mn 0.07 (OH) 2 + Al(OH) 3 . As another example, the lithium source may be LiOH·H 2 O and the precursor may be Ni 0.88 Co 0.05 Mn 0.07 (OH) 2 + Al(OH) 3 .
Preferably, the positive electrode active material is an NCM-based lithium composite transition metal oxide, but any positive electrode active material used in lithium secondary batteries can be used.
Heat treatment during the first firing can be performed in an oxygen concentration range of 21 to 100%. When the first calcination is performed under an oxygen atmosphere, lithium can easily enter the interior of the precursor, and the formation of residual lithium on the surface of the finally manufactured positive electrode active material can be suppressed. In addition, surface defects can be suppressed, and electrochemical and cycle characteristics can be improved.
The heat treatment temperature during the first firing is lower than the heat treatment temperature during the second firing performed later. For example, the heat treatment temperature during the first firing may be 0.75 to 1 times the heat treatment temperature during the second firing. The appropriate heat treatment temperature may vary within the above range depending on the NCM element content. For example, heat treatment during the first firing may be performed at 500 to 900°C. Below 500°C, sufficient reaction may not occur. If the temperature exceeds 900°C, there is a risk of performance degradation due to thermal decomposition of the positive electrode active material. For example, it can be carried out at 600 ~ 700℃. When the temperature during the first sintering satisfies the above range, lithium ions can diffuse smoothly into the transition metal hydroxide, and moisture and/or gas, which are reaction by-products, are removed during the first sintering process, resulting in an increase in the sintered product compared to the reactants. The volume decreases and the true density increases. By increasing the true density of the fired product through the first firing, a larger amount of reactant can be contained in a reactor of the same volume during the second firing, thereby significantly increasing production volume.
Next, a second firing step is performed in which the fired product from the first firing is heat treated at a higher temperature (main firing, step S20).
Before performing the secondary firing step, a step of non-grinding and mixing the fired product from the primary firing may be further included. Finely pulverizing the fired product by the primary firing may be done using a general fine pulverizing method known in the art, for example, ball mill, jet mill, ACM (air classify milling) using an internal hammer, or It can be performed through sieving, etc., but is not limited to this. In the fired product obtained after the first firing, agglomeration of particles may partially occur. Therefore, the quality uniformity of the finally obtained positive electrode active material can be improved by performing fine grinding and homogenization of the aggregated particles.
Heat treatment during the secondary firing can be performed in an oxygen concentration range of 21 to 100%. When the secondary calcination is performed under an oxygen atmosphere, lithium can easily enter the inside of the precursor, and the formation of residual lithium on the surface of the final manufactured positive electrode active material can be suppressed. In addition, surface defects can be suppressed, and electrochemical properties and cycle characteristics can be improved.
The heat treatment during the secondary firing may also be performed at 500 to 900° C., similar to the heat treatment during the primary firing. For example, it can be carried out at 700 ~ 800℃. The heat treatment temperature during the second firing is higher than the heat treatment temperature during the first firing performed previously. When secondary firing is performed in the above temperature range, the crystal structure of the positive electrode active material is well developed, and a positive electrode active material with excellent capacity characteristics, lifespan characteristics, and high temperature characteristics can be manufactured.
S30).The fired product from the secondary firing is washed with water (step S30).
Unreacted residual lithium may exist on the surface of the fired product due to secondary firing. In the water washing step (S30), unreacted residual lithium is removed.
Since lithium compounds, such as LiOH, may remain in the positive electrode active material, a water washing step may be required. The washing step may be performed by mixing the fired product:water content at a weight ratio of 50 to 200% and stirring. When washing with water, additives such as LiOH and NaOH can be added. After stirring, filtration can be performed.
For example, wash the fired product with water in a 1:1 ratio. The temperature of the water may be 5°C to 80°C, preferably 10°C to 60°C. Through the water washing process, lithium by-products on the surface of the positive electrode active material are dissociated into the water washing solution and can be easily removed from the surface of the positive electrode active material. After washing with water, drying can be carried out at an appropriate temperature. For example, drying can be performed at 100 to 200°C.
Through steps S10 to S30 above, positive electrode active material powder can be manufactured.
다음으로 양극 활물질 분체에 B 함유 소스와 F 함유 소스를 섞은 뒤 열처리하여 상기 양극 활물질 분체 표면에 코팅을 수행한다(단계 S40).Next, the positive active material powder is mixed with the B-containing source and the F-containing source and then heat-treated to coat the surface of the positive active material powder (step S40).
The positive electrode active material powder for a lithium secondary battery may include two or more types of positive electrode active materials having different average particle diameters, and may contain a greater amount of the positive electrode active material with a larger average particle diameter among the two or more types of positive electrode active materials.
The B-containing source may use various sources containing B, and the F-containing source may use various sources containing F.
The B-containing source uses one or more of H 3 BO 3 , H 4 BO 4 , B 2 O 3 , LiBO 2 , Li 2 B 4 O 7 , B 4 C, AlBO 2 , and AlB 2 O 4 individually or in combination. It may be. Preferably it is H 3 BO 3 . Preferably the F-containing source is PVDF. PVDF can be dissolved in an appropriate solvent and mixed into the positive electrode active material powder.
The method of mixing the B-containing source and the F-containing source with the positive electrode active material powder may be performed in a solid phase or liquid phase method. As a solid or liquid method, methods such as mixing, milling, spray drying, and grinding can be used.
The heat treatment performed after mixing the B-containing source and the F-containing source can be performed in an oxygen concentration range of 21 to 100%. The heat treatment temperature during the coating is lower than the heat treatment temperature in the first sintering step. The heat treatment temperature during the coating may be performed at 200 to 500°C. Below 200°C, the surface protective layer may not be formed smoothly or uniformly, and capacity may not be developed smoothly. Above 500℃, the positive electrode active material may not maintain its original properties and its high-temperature lifespan may deteriorate. This heat treatment temperature range may vary depending on the NCM element content.
The amounts of the B-containing source and the F-containing source may be such that B weight/positive electrode active material weight = 200 to 5,000 ppm and F weight/positive electrode active material weight = 200 to 2,000 ppm.
If the B weight/positive electrode active material weight is less than 200 ppm or the F weight/positive electrode active material weight is less than 200 ppm, the coating is not effective. If the B weight/positive electrode active material weight exceeds 5,000 ppm or the F weight/positive electrode active material weight exceeds 2,000 ppm, an excessive coating layer may be generated, and such an excessive coating layer is undesirable in terms of capacity and resistance.
The positive electrode active material of the present invention that can be produced by the above production method has the following characteristics. The positive electrode active material according to the present invention includes a coating layer on the surface of the positive active material powder for lithium secondary batteries, and the coating layer includes B and F. By forming the coating layer, contact between the positive electrode active material and the electrolyte solution included in the lithium secondary battery is blocked, thereby suppressing the occurrence of side reactions, and improving the surface safety of the positive electrode active material.
For example, the positive electrode active material may be NCM. Among them, especially in the case of high-nickel NCM with a nickel content of 80% or more, reactivity with the electrolyte solution must be reduced to increase stability in a cycle operation environment. The positive electrode active material according to the present invention includes a coating layer containing B and F. This coating layer can reduce reactivity with the electrolyte solution, thereby reducing gas generation at high temperatures. According to the present invention, stability can be improved and battery performance can be improved by modifying the surface of the positive electrode active material to include a coating layer compositely coated with B and F.
In particular, the coating layer may have an F - /BO 2 - area ratio of 0.05 to 0.19 and an F - /LiB 2 O 4 - area ratio of 0.08 to 0.27 in the ToF-SIMS spectrum.
In other words, the coating layer of the positive electrode active material according to the present invention has a certain relationship with the area ratio between specific components obtained by ToF-SIMS analysis, and when such positive active material is used for the positive electrode of a lithium secondary battery, high output and high stability can be achieved. .
In this way, according to the present invention, the high-temperature lifespan, resistance increase rate, and low-temperature output characteristics of the positive electrode active material can be improved by composite coating B and F.
As another example, the positive electrode active material powder for a lithium secondary battery may include two or more types of positive electrode active materials having different average particle diameters, and may include a greater amount of the positive electrode active material with a larger average particle diameter among the two or more types of positive electrode active materials. For example, the positive electrode active material may be a mixture of a positive electrode active material with a size of 10 μm and a positive active material with a size of 5 μm at a weight ratio of 8:2.
The average particle diameter of the positive electrode active material is preferably within the range of 2 ㎛ or more and 50 ㎛ or less. If the average particle size of the positive electrode active material is less than 2 ㎛, the positive active material is easy to separate from the current collector during the press process when manufacturing the positive electrode, and the surface area of the positive active material increases, so it is not necessary to increase the amount of conductive material or binder added. This is because the energy density per unit mass becomes small, and conversely, if it exceeds 50 μm, the possibility of the positive electrode active material penetrating the separator and causing a short circuit increases.
Hereinafter, the present invention will be described in more detail through experimental examples.

Referring to Table 1, the life maintenance rate of the embodiments of the present invention is improved compared to Comparative Example 1. From Example 1 to Example 3 of the present invention, that is, as the F weight increases, the charging capacity, discharging capacity, and efficiency decrease, but the life maintenance rate improves.
Monocell characteristic evaluation
Make a positive electrode slurry by setting the ratios of the positive electrode active material, conductive material, binder, and additives to 97.5 / 1.0 / 1.35 / 0.15, respectively. An anode slurry is coated on an aluminum current collector and a cathode counter electrode is prepared by mixing natural graphite and artificial graphite in a specific ratio. The electrolyte solution is prepared with 0.7M salt, and LiFSI (Lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide, 0.3M) is added to maintain the lifespan. The amount of liquid injected is calculated as 100 μL per electrode, and a separator manufactured by the company is placed between the anode and cathode of an appropriate size. ToF-SIMSToF-SIMS (Time of Flight secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry:비행 시간형 2차 이온 질량 분석법) 분석 결과(Time of Flight secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry) analysis results
ToF-SIMS analysis was performed to confirm the composition of the coating layer. XRD measurements are usually used to confirm material composition and crystal structure, but because the coating layer of the positive electrode active material has a thickness of several to tens of nanometers, it is difficult to detect peaks through XRD measurement. In the present invention, the components of a very thin coating layer were confirmed through ToF-SIMS analysis.

[표 4] [Table 4]
The coating layer of Example 1 had an F - /BO 2 - area ratio of 0.05 and an F - /LiB 2 O 4 - area ratio of 0.08 in the ToF-SIMS spectrum. The coating layer of Example 2 had an F - /BO 2 - area ratio of 0.14 and an F - /LiB 2 O 4 - area ratio of 0.21 in the ToF-SIMS spectrum. The coating layer of Example 3 had an F - /BO 2 - area ratio of 0.19 and an F - /LiB 2 O 4 - area ratio of 0.27 in the ToF-SIMS spectrum. On the other hand, the coating layer of Comparative Example 1 has an F - /BO 2 - area ratio of 0.01 and a F - /LiB 2 O 4 - area ratio of 0.02 in the ToF-SIMS spectrum (i.e., there is almost no F - ). In this way, according to the embodiment conditions of the present invention, the coating layer has an F - /BO 2 - area ratio of 0.05 to 0.19 and a F - /LiB 2 O 4 - area ratio of 0.08 to 0.27 in the ToF-SIMS spectrum. If the F - /BO 2 - area ratio is less than 0.05 or the F - /LiB 2 O 4 - area ratio is less than 0.08, the effect of including F in the coating layer is minimal. In other words, the improvement effect in terms of charge capacity, discharge capacity, efficiency, lifespan, and resistance is minimal. If the F - /BO 2 - area ratio is greater than 0.19 or F - /LiB 2 O 4 - area ratio is greater than 0.27, the improved charging capacity, discharging capacity, and efficiency improvement effect will be reduced, so do not exceed the above range.

Although the present invention has been described above with reference to limited embodiments and drawings, the present invention is not limited thereto and various modifications and variations can be made by those skilled in the art within the spirit of the present invention and the equivalent scope of the claims set forth below. Of course it is possible.
