Description
The present invention relates to a technology for producing high-quality titanium and titanium alloy at low cost, using titanium scrap and using a vacuum vertical centrifugal casting apparatus to which an induction skull melting method is applied to produce high-quality titanium and titanium alloys at low cost. It relates to a technique for manufacturing a titanium alloy.
Titanium is a lightweight metal and is a new material with very high specific strength and corrosion resistance. It usually exists as a mineral in the form of a compound with oxygen. To separate this oxygen, a complicated process is required, and toxic elements must be used, so safety facilities are absolutely essential. Therefore, despite the excellent properties of titanium, the manufacturing cost is very high compared to other structural materials. Therefore, there is a need for a technology for producing titanium and titanium alloys using titanium scrap that can overcome disadvantages such as high melting point, high reactivity, and difficult machinability. However, in spite of a lot of effort to develop scrap recycling technology, in Korea, the technology for producing titanium and titanium alloy from titanium scrap is insignificant in technology for producing titanium and titanium alloy from titanium scrap. In addition, as there is currently no place that mass-produces and manufactures titanium castings in Korea, it is one of the technological developments that must be achieved on the road to advanced materials. .
Traditionally, vacuum arc melting furnaces (VAM) and vacuum induction melting furnaces (VIM) have been applied as melting furnaces for casting metal alloys.
A vacuum arc furnace uses a tungsten electrode to arc metal placed within a water-cooled copper crucible in an inert atmosphere. This crucible can melt alloys such as iron, nickel, cobalt, titanium, and zirconium, but the melting cycle must be repeated several times for uniform melting.
Vacuum induction melting furnaces use a refractory crucible located within an induction coil to melt metals without interaction with air. As a commonly applied metal, iron, nickel, cobalt, or a copper-based alloy is melted and cast in a circular or slab mold, so it is necessary to manufacture a refractory crucible. The high vacuum and fire resistant systems used minimize the amount of oxides, nitrides and other harmful substances.
Therefore, in the present invention, in order to compensate for the disadvantages of the traditional melting method, almost all types of metal materials can be used, and an Induction Skull Melting (ISM) that does not use a refractory crucible is applied to the production of titanium and titanium alloys. We want to develop a technology that can cast a casting product at a low cost by using titanium scrap with a higher yield than the existing casting system.
The present invention induces uniform melting during casting of titanium and titanium alloy, and the absence of a refractory crucible reduces the reaction between molten metal and oxygen, so the properties of the casting can be improved, and low-cost titanium and titanium alloy casting technology using titanium scrap is to develop
The present invention utilizes inexpensive titanium scrap compared to the conventional titanium sponge.
In addition, the present invention melts a solid metal in an induction skull melting furnace (Induction Skull Melting (ISM)) method. Induction skull melting is a method of melting metals in a segmented, water-cooled copper vessel under vacuum or controlled atmosphere using an induction coil. The magnetic field generated by the coil passes through the crucible and induces heat of the metal charge, stirring the molten metal in a certain pattern. Agitation promotes a very uniform molten metal and effectively evenly distributes the high-density alloy components throughout the casting during casting.
The application of the induction skull melting furnace is a method of dissolving metal in a copper crucible metal-to-metal in a copper crucible without a refractory material in a vacuum, and the reaction of the molten metal with oxygen is suppressed by the absence of a refractory material.
The molten metal in contact with the crucible is solidified by the water-cooled segment, and a thin metal boundary layer is formed between the crucible and the molten metal due to the generated skull. to extend
The molten metal is pushed inward with the side facing away from the inner sidewall of the crucible. This avoids electrical shorting of the crucible segment due to no physical contact with the sidewall and reduces heat loss to the crucible.
In addition, in the present invention, although vertical and tilt-type vacuum centrifugal vertical devices can be applied, it is preferable to use a tilt-type vacuum centrifugal vertical device in terms of efficiency.
By applying the pre-treated titanium scrap to casting, it is possible to cast titanium and titanium alloys that are economical and have high properties compared to conventional titanium materials.
By using an induction skull melting furnace, the raw material cost is greatly reduced due to the use of various materials.
Titanium alloy, a metal that is difficult to melt and cast, can manufacture parts with gaseous impurity quality levels that are at least automotive-grade.
It can promote the localization and overseas expansion of titanium castings that can be applied not only to automobile parts but also to space parts and aircraft bodies.
In addition, by localizing high-performance/high-efficiency parts, it is possible to raise the national status and secure price competitiveness with other countries.

In the present invention, the melting of a metal material forms a molten metal using an induction skull melting furnace. 3 is a schematic schematic diagram of an induction skull melting furnace applied in the present invention.
The induced skull dissolution of step (S-3) induces agitation of the four quadrants generated by the induction field. This promotes a uniform alloy composition, allows the alloy components to be uniformly dissolved and dispersed, and can melt more complex alloys, eliminating the need for double melting.
In the step (S-3), since the voltage and frequency of the induction coil change according to the type and size of the alloy, the range is not limited in the present invention.
The thickness of the skull generated by the water-cooled segment in step (S-3) changes depending on the type of alloy and the temperature of the coolant, so the range cannot be predicted. However, less than 10% by weight of the initial fill weight of the skull is produced.
In addition, the generated skull is created with a constant thickness, and unlike a vacuum arc melting furnace, the thickness is not thickened.
The molten metal in contact with the crucible is solidified by the water-cooled segment, and a thin metal boundary layer is formed between the crucible and the molten metal due to the generated skull. to extend
Induction skull melting furnace is a method of dissolving metals in a copper crucible in a metal-to-metal manner in a vacuum without refractory materials. The absence of refractories prevents the reaction of molten metal with oxygen.
The molten metal is pushed inward by the sides from the inner sidewall of the crucible, which has no physical contact with the sidewall to prevent electrical shorting of the crucible segment and reduce heat loss to the crucible.
When the molten metal is injected while rotating the cylindrical mold at 300-3000 rpm in the step (S-4), the molten metal is compressed and solidified on the inner surface of the mold by centrifugal force. Centrifugal casting also has a drawback in that it tends to segregate, so the solidification rate must be appropriately adjusted for injection conditions such as rotation speed, injection speed, and injection temperature.
Hereinafter, a manufacturing process of a titanium alloy using an induction skull melting furnace will be described in detail with reference to FIG. 1 .
Example]
For titanium alloy manufacturing, 10 kg of iron scrap, 5 kg of titanium 6-4 bulk scrap, and 35 kg of titanium 6-4 turning chip scrap are prepared. The prepared scrap was first subjected to a rotary kiln process, followed by pretreatment of dehydration washing (100 o C, repeated twice) and ultrasonic washing (50 o C, 20 minutes). After that, 5 kg of titanium 6-4 bulk scrap material was charged into the induction melting furnace, and then 10 kg of iron scrap was charged. In an embodiment of the present invention, an induction skull melting furnace was applied to reduce the oxidation reaction of the raw metal. After that, when the molten metal was formed by high-frequency induction, titanium 6-4 turning chips were additionally charged and completely melted, and then a ferro-titanium alloy ingot was manufactured through a tapping process.
Comparative example]

Pipe or cylindrical products are produced by horizontal centrifugal casting, and in the case of short ring-shaped products, products are produced by vertical centrifugal casting. However, in the present invention, a tilt-type vacuum centrifugal casting method is applied. 4 is a simplified schematic diagram of a tilt-type vacuum vertical centrifugal casting apparatus applied in the present invention. Since tilt-type vacuum centrifugal casting is not limited by the amount of molten metal, castings can be manufactured more efficiently.
Figure 5 shows the content of oxygen and nitrogen in the alloy produced by the composition analysis table of the ferro-titanium alloy produced in Comparative Examples and Examples in the present invention. Low content of oxygen and nitrogen components was detected due to the absence of a refractory crucible in the ferro-titanium produced in the example cast by the induction skull melting furnace applied in the present invention.
Currently, there is no place in Korea that mass-produces and manufactures castings by applying titanium scrap and induction skull melting method, so it is a technology development that must be achieved on the road to advanced materials.
