Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a carbon nanotube pellet having excellent physical properties and a method of manufacturing the same.
Depending on the shape of the material, carbon nanomaterials include Fullerene, Carbon Nanotube (CNT), Graphene, and Graphite Nano Plate, of which carbon nanotubes are 1 Hexagonal honeycomb-shaped graphite faces with three carbon atoms bonded to three other carbon atoms are macromolecules rolled into nano-sized diameters.
Because carbon nanotubes are hollow, they are light and have electrical conductivity as good as copper, thermal conductivity is as good as diamond, and tensile strength is as good as steel. Depending on the rolled shape, it is also classified into Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube (SWCNT), Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube (MWCNT), and Rope Carbon Nanotube.
Due to its excellent physical properties, these carbon nanotubes are in the spotlight as a filler for various polymer composite materials such as antistatic polymer composite materials, electromagnetic wave shield polymer composite materials, heat dissipation polymer composite materials, and high-strength polymer composite materials. There is a lot of research and development in progress for commercialization of polymer composite materials.
On the other hand, in the conventional case, carbon nanotubes were manufactured in the form of powder or were manufactured in the form of pellets and transferred and used, but in the case of the powder form, there is a problem that the powder is scattered, and the diameter of the pellets is increased even when manufacturing in the form of pellets In this case, there is a problem that the physical properties of the carbon nanotube pellets themselves are deteriorated, and when the pellets are manufactured with a small diameter, productivity is degraded, and there is a problem that a large amount of metallic foreign matter remaining in the pellets acts as an impurity in the subsequent use.
An object of the present invention is to provide a carbon nanotube pellet that can be used in various fields because it has a large diameter and has high productivity, has similar or improved physical properties to the conventional carbon nanotube pellet, and the residual amount of metallic foreign matter is also small. .
The present invention provides carbon nanotube pellets containing carbon nanotube particles having an average particle diameter of 200 to 800 μm, not containing a solvent, and having a pellet diameter of 7 to 20 mm.
In addition, the present invention is a method for producing the above pellets, including the step of preparing carbon nanotube pellets by introducing carbon nanotube particles having an average particle diameter of 200 to 800 μm into a rotary tablet press, and applying pressure. It provides a method for producing tube pellets.
The carbon nanotube pellets provided by the present invention have a small residual amount of metal foreign matter, so that they can be easily used in various applications without a separate metal removal process, and can be produced in large quantities, which is economical and has excellent physical properties of the manufactured pellets. It can be used as a substitute for nanotube pellets.

2 is an SEM observation of the surface of carbon nanotubes that cannot be used to manufacture the carbon nanotube pellets of the present invention.
Hereinafter, the present invention will be described in more detail.
The terms or words used in this specification and claims should not be construed as being limited to their usual or dictionary meanings, and the inventor may appropriately define the concept of terms in order to describe his own invention in the best way. It should be interpreted as a meaning and concept consistent with the technical idea of the present invention based on the principle that there is.
In the present invention, the "average particle diameter" may be a value measured as a weight average value D50 (particle diameter or median diameter when the cumulative weight becomes 50% of the total weight) in the particle size distribution measurement by laser light diffraction method.
Carbon nanotube
Prior to describing the carbon nanotube pellets of the present invention, the carbon nanotubes used to manufacture the carbon nanotube pellets of the present invention will be described.
The carbon nanotube particles contained in the carbon nanotube pellets of the present invention may have an average particle diameter of 50 μm or more, preferably 200 μm or more, more preferably 200 to 800 μm, and particularly preferably 400 to 600 μm. have. In addition, the carbon nanotubes may have a bulk density of 20 to 40 kg/m 3 and a specific surface area of 160 to 300 m 2 /g, and the angle of repose of the carbon nanotubes may be 40 to 65 degrees.
If the physical properties of the carbon nanotubes meet this range, the carbon nanotube pellets produced have excellent electrical conductivity, but have the advantage of excellent dispersibility when used after dispersing. If the physical properties of the carbon nanotubes are out of this range, the pellets will be properly It may not be manufactured, or defects in manufacturing may occur.
It is preferable that the carbon nanotubes contained in the carbon nanotube pellets of the present invention have a bundle structure. When the structure of the carbon nanotubes is a bundle type, it is advantageous for the production of pellets afterwards because the van der Waals attraction on the surface is strong and can be strongly agglomerated with neighboring particles, and is particularly used for producing the carbon nanotube pellets of the present invention having a large diameter. Suitable for
Carbon nanotube pellet
The present invention provides carbon nanotube pellets containing carbon nanotube particles having an average particle diameter of 200 μm or more, not containing a solvent, and having a pellet diameter of 7 mm or more.
The carbon nanotube pellets of the present invention are manufactured using the carbon nanotubes described above, and are characterized in that they do not contain a solvent. In the case of manufacturing carbon nanotubes in the form of pellets in the prior art, in order to improve the bonding strength between carbon nanotubes, etc., the carbon nanotubes are added to a solvent, additives such as dispersants are added, and then extruded through an extruder. However, in this case, there was a problem that additives and solvents remained in the carbon nanotube pellets, which could act as impurities when used later. In terms of process, additional facilities or processes for adding solvents and additives are required, so the overall cost of the process There was a downside to this increase.
On the other hand, the carbon nanotube pellets provided by the present invention do not use a solvent or additives in the manufacturing process, and the finally produced carbon nanotube pellets also do not contain a solvent and do not contain any additives. The process can also be simplified, so it has the advantage of economical production.
In particular, the carbon nanotube pellets of the present invention may have a diameter of 7 to 20 mm, preferably 7 to 12 mm. If the diameter of the carbon nanotube pellet is smaller than this, the amount of metal foreign matter that may occur during the pellet manufacturing process increases, and the productivity of the pellet manufacturing decreases. If the diameter of the pellet is too large, the manufacture of the pellet itself is not easy. Dispersibility may also be inferior in terms of utilization after manufacturing.
In addition, the carbon nanotube pellets of the present invention may have a density of 0.15 to 0.4g/cm 3 , preferably 0.18 to 0.3g/cm 3 . If the density is lower than this, the amount of carbon nanotube particles contained is small compared to the volume of the pellet, so there may be a problem that the pellet is easily broken during transport. If the density is higher than this, the dispersibility in the solvent or polymer substrate is poor, and the carbon nanotube There is a problem that the properties of the tube itself are poor.
Manufacturing method of carbon nanotube pellets
The present invention provides a manufacturing method for manufacturing the carbon nanotube pellets described above. Specifically, the present invention provides a method for producing carbon nanotube pellets comprising the step of injecting carbon nanotube particles having an average particle diameter of 200 to 800 μm into a rotary tablet press and applying pressure to prepare carbon nanotube pellets.
In the present invention, carbon nanotube pellets are manufactured using a rotary tablet press, not an extruder that has been mainly used for carbon nanotube pellets, and accordingly, no separate solvent or additive is mixed with the carbon nanotubes. It is possible to pelletize.
The rotary tablet press used in the manufacturing method of the present invention is not particularly limited as long as it is generally used for pelletizing, and a person skilled in the art can select and use an appropriate rotary tablet press to satisfy the preferable range of properties of the carbon nanotube pellets described above. have.
The rotary tablet press used in the present invention includes a punch with a tip and a die with a hole like a general rotary tablet press, and the carbon nanotube particles injected into the hole of the die are compressed by the tip of the punch to pelletize. Accordingly, the diameter of the carbon nanotube pellet is determined according to the diameter of the tip, and the diameter of the tip may be 7 to 20 mm, preferably 7 to 12 mm, as described above for the carbon nanotube pellet. If the hole diameter is smaller than this, the number of holes in the tip and die of the metal punch increases, and accordingly, the area in which the carbon nanotube contacts the metal surface of the tip and the hole increases, and the amount of metal foreign matter that may occur in the compression process There is a problem with this increasing. In addition, if the diameter of the hole is larger than this, the diameter of the pellets to be produced afterwards becomes too large, and it may be difficult to accurately quantify or compound when used later, and the dispersion uniformity may be poor when carbon nanotubes are dispersed in various solvents or polymer substrates. There may be a downside of being able to.
Holes and tips of the rotary tablet press may be spaced apart by an interval of tolerance. When the hole and the tip are spaced apart by a tolerance, the friction between the hole and the tip is reduced, which is preferable in that the amount of metal foreign matter generated can be reduced, and the tolerance is 10 to 100 μm, preferably 20 It may be to 50㎛. If the tolerance is smaller than this, the friction reduction effect does not appear large, and if the tolerance is larger than this, the hole and the tip are too far apart, so that the compression of the carbon nanotube may not be smooth.
The method for producing carbon nanotube pellets of the present invention may further include removing metallic foreign matter remaining in the carbon nanotube particles before the carbon nanotubes are introduced into the rotary tablet press. In the case of such a step, metal foreign matter remaining on the finally produced carbon nanotube pellet can be further minimized by removing the metal foreign matter remaining on the surface of the produced carbon nanotube particle in advance, and remaining on the carbon nanotube particle surface. Since the metal foreign material may have an adverse effect on the compression process in the rotary tablet press, when such a step is performed, the physical properties of the carbon nanotube pellets produced may be more uniformly excellent.
In the manufacturing method of the present invention, the pressure applied to the carbon nanotube particles in the rotary tablet press may be 40 to 1500 kg/cm 2 , preferably 60 to 700 kg/cm 2 . If the applied pressure is less than this, the pellet itself may not be manufactured well because the force required for compression is not sufficiently applied, and if the pressure is greater than this, the structure of the carbon nanotube particles themselves may collapse.

Experimental Example 1. Checking whether carbon nanotubes can be pelletized
In order to check whether the carbon nanotubes A and B of the material can be pelletized, the tip diameter of the rotary tablet press was varied, and a pressure of 64 kg/cm 2 was applied to confirm whether or not pelletization was possible, and the results are shown in Table 1 below. Indicated.
As can be seen from Table 1, it was confirmed that the carbon nanotubes B having a bundle-type and entangle-type structure and an average particle diameter of 150 μm were not smoothly pelletized through a rotary tablet press, and pelletized through a rotary tablet press. For this, it was confirmed that carbon nanotubes of specific conditions used in the present invention should be used.
Experimental Example 2. Confirmation of physical properties of carbon nanotube pellets according to pressure
Carbon nanotube A was used, the tip diameter was 7 mm, and the pressure was changed as shown in Table 2 to prepare carbon nanotube pellets, and the electrical resistance of the prepared pellet itself was confirmed. In addition, in order to confirm the physical properties in the form of the dispersion, the viscosity of the NMP dispersion prepared by dispersing the pellets in NMP and the resistance when applying the positive electrode slurry was confirmed. The NMP dispersion was prepared by adding 2% by weight of carbon nanotubes, 0.4% by weight of a polymer-based dispersant, and the remaining 97.6% by weight of NMP into a container, followed by stirring for 10 minutes, and the viscosity was first measured immediately after stirring, and twice. The average value was taken as the dispersion viscosity value in Table 2 below. After that, the dispersion was dispersed for 2 passes using a high-pressure homogenizer, and the viscosity was measured again for each pass. Resistance when applying the positive electrode slurry was confirmed by measuring the surface resistance by mixing each dispersion with a positive electrode active material and a binder, coating it on a film, and drying it.

From Table 2 above, it was confirmed that the carbon nanotube pellets of the present invention exhibited a similar degree of resistance as when in a powder state and had excellent conductivity. In particular, when tableting at a pressure of 100 kg/cm 2 or more, the dispersion viscosity was low and the slurry resistance was excellent. Then, it was confirmed that it is suitable for use as a conductive material.
Experimental Example 3. Confirmation of formation of metallic foreign matter in carbon nanotube pellets
The number of metal foreign matters in the 250g sample was counted and confirmed in the case where the tolerance was not the same, but the pellets were manufactured with different diameters and the diameter was the same as 7mm, but the pellets were manufactured with different tolerances. It is shown in Table 3 below. In all cases, the pressure was applied at 64 kg/cm 2 .

From the above results, when the carbon nanotube pellets have the diameter range of the present invention, the number of metal foreign matters generated is small, and when the tolerance is also within the range of the present invention, the number of metal foreign matters generated is small, so that the quality of the carbon nanotube pellets is reduced. I confirmed the excellence.
