Description
BACKGROUND OF THE
Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) optical communication systems have provided a very important technical solution for handling ever-increasing Internet traffic capacity. When data of 10 Gigabits per second can be transmitted at one wavelength, data can be generated using 40 wavelengths, multiplexed, and transmitted through one optical fiber. In the WDM optical communication system, 400 Gigabits of data can be transmitted And has the ability to transmit in one second. In a WDM optical communication system using several different wavelengths, it is desired to increase data transmission speed by using a plurality of light sources having different wavelengths. In order to extract data having different wavelengths, a wavelength A filter is required.
The most commonly used components for wavelength filters are flat panel filter parts made by periodically stacking dielectric materials with different refractive indices. However, this part has the drawback that it can be used only when it is collimated in free space to form light which does not spread. When the optical waveguide structure is used, the light emitted from the optical fiber is directly incident on the optical waveguide device, and the desired function can be performed. Optical waveguide devices such as Arrayed Waveguide Grating (AWG) have a function of outputting the input light of various wavelengths divided by wavelength. However, the AWG device has a complicated structure and is not suitable for the purpose of filtering only a single wavelength. It is also very difficult to implement a variable wavelength filter capable of changing the wavelength to be extracted by filtering.
The polymer optical waveguide device can excellently accomplish the object of controlling and modifying the light transmitted through the optical fiber in various forms within the device to output. The waveguide mode of the polymer optical waveguide can be basically matched with the waveguide mode of the optical fiber and the refractive index can be similarly adjusted so that no additional loss occurs when the optical fiber is connected. In addition, polymer optical waveguide devices are suitable for fabricating basic devices for optical signal control such as optical switches and optical attenuators, and thus provide a suitable platform for integrating various functional optical devices together with them. In addition, polymer optical devices are well suited for optical signal control using heat due to their excellent thermal insulation and high thermo-optic properties. In addition, since the magnitude of thermo-optic effect is 10 times or more larger than that of silica or other materials, efficient optical signal control can be achieved by using less heat.
When a wavelength filter element is fabricated using a polymer optical waveguide, it is necessary to raise the reflectance of the Bragg grating to be close to 100%. However, since the Bragg grating is formed by a method of periodically changing the thickness of the core portion of the optical waveguide, the reflectance of the Bragg grating is determined by the difference in effective refractive index between the thick portion and the thin portion of the core portion. Therefore, if the thickness difference of the core portion due to the lattice is made large, the reflectance becomes large. However, since the Bragg grating has a pattern size of only about 250 nm, and the grating must be arranged at an accurate cycle of several thousand or more, it is very difficult to make a large difference in the thickness of the core part.
In order to increase the reflectance of the Bragg grating without increasing the thickness difference of the core part, it is necessary to increase the refractive index difference between the core and the cladding. However, in this case, if the refractive index difference is too large, the optical waveguide has a problem of supporting the multi-mode. Therefore, in order to increase the refractive index difference of the optical waveguide, the size of the optical waveguide must be reduced. However, when the size of the optical waveguide is reduced, the waveguide mode is reduced accordingly, which causes a very large connection loss when connected to the optical fiber.

The micro-heater may further include a micro heater disposed on the cladding layer and capable of changing the refractive index by transmitting heat to the Bragg grating pattern portion.
According to the present invention, it is possible to fabricate a Bragg grating having a short reflectance while having a short length by using a small core, high refractive index optical waveguide, and by using an optical waveguide mode converter of a tapered structure, It is possible to reduce the coupling loss. Through this structural change, a compact optical waveguide type wavelength filter having a high reflectance can be manufactured. If the wavelength filter is implemented through the optical waveguide technology, the productivity of the product can be improved to be very high, so that it can be made cost competitive, and it is advantageous to mass produce the same quality products. Through this, it is possible to implement a product that can replace the conventional thin film type wavelength filter.

1 to 4, the
The
A first core formed inside the cladding layer and having a Bragg grating pattern formed in a part thereof, and a second core formed inside the first core, The waveguide mode of the first core is converted into the waveguide mode of the second core. In order to increase the reflectance of the Bragg grating, it is advantageous to make Bragg reflection by the localized wave while forming a small mode in the second core manufactured by using the polymer having a large refractive index difference. However, if the optical fiber and the second core structure are directly connected to each other, a difference in the mode size becomes severe and the optical coupling loss becomes large. To prevent this, the optical fiber is connected to the first core having the large waveguide mode, and then the first core mode is converted into the second core mode using the taper structure.

As described above, the
The
At this time, the
Accordingly, the
The
After forming the
After forming the
The completed
As described above, when light is incident on the fabricated device through the optical cable, light can be propagated through the
Light having a specific wavelength to be filtered by the
In addition, when the light travels as described above, the optical waveguide mode is deformed in the course of passing through the
In particular, referring to FIG. 4, FIG. 4A is a portion A in FIG. 1, FIG. 4B is a portion B in FIG. 1, Is a contour line representing the intensity of the light in the portion. At this time, the distribution of the intensity of light passing through the
In addition, the reflectance can be increased through the
Therefore, the
In particular, by implementing the
5 is a plan view of an optical waveguide device according to another embodiment of the present invention.
The
The micro-heater 270 may be fabricated by aligning with a Bragg grating pattern on the upper part of the
The
