석곡은 난초과(orchidae)에 속하는 다년생초본으로 학명은 Dendrobium moniliforme Sw이다. 뿌리줄기에서 여러 개의 굵은 뿌리를 내리고 여러 개의 줄기가 높이 20cm 정도로 모여 자란다. 줄기는 퉁퉁하고 마디가 있다. 잎은 2~3년생으로 어긋나고 피침 모양이며 광택이 있다. 표면은 진녹색이고 기부는 엽초와 연결된다. 오래된 줄기에는 잎이 달리지 않는다. 5~6월에 오래된 줄기의 위쪽 마디에서 1~2개의 흰색 또는 연분홍색의 향기가 있는 꽃이 달린다. 중앙부 꽃받침 잎은 피침형 예두이고 꽃잎은 꽃받침과 길이가 비슷하다. 꽃 색이 변화가 많은 편이다. 남부지방의 바위 겉이나 노출된 고목 표면에 붙어서 자라는 상록다년초이다. 중국, 일본, 대만 등지에 분포한다.Gingko is a perennial plant belonging to the orchidaceae (orchidae).
