Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a solid oxide fuel cell having excellent surface pressure uniformity and durability.
Solid oxide fuel cells generally operate at the highest temperatures of any fuel cell, and because all components are solid, they are simpler in structure than other fuel cells, and there is no problem of electrolyte loss, replenishment and corrosion, and precious metal catalysts. No fuel is required and fuel is supplied directly through internal reforming. In addition, it has the advantage that thermal combined cycle power generation using waste heat is possible because the high-temperature gas is discharged. Due to these advantages, researches on solid oxide fuel cells are actively conducted.
Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) is an electrochemical energy conversion device composed of an oxygen ion conducting electrolyte, an air electrode and a fuel electrode located on both sides thereof. In the air electrode, oxygen ions generated by the reduction reaction of oxygen move to the fuel electrode through the electrolyte and react with hydrogen supplied to the fuel electrode to generate water. At this time, electrons are generated in the fuel electrode and electrons are consumed in the air electrode. When the electrodes are connected to each other, electricity flows.
However, since the electric power generated in one unit cell based on the air electrode, the electrolyte and the fuel electrode is considerably small, a large amount of electric power can be output by constructing the fuel cell by stacking (stacking) a plurality of unit cells, And can be applied to various power generation systems. For lamination, it is necessary that the air electrode of one unit cell and the fuel electrode of another unit cell be electrically connected, and a separator is used for this purpose. Further, a current collector is provided between the air electrode or the fuel electrode and the separator plate so that the air electrode or the fuel electrode can electrically and uniformly contact the separator plate. In addition, upper and lower ends of the stack are provided with upper and lower end plates, respectively, and the upper and lower end plates are connected with fastening bars to be fastened through bolts / nuts to manufacture a fuel cell.
On the other hand, in the case of fuel cells, in particular, large area flat fuel cells, uniform distribution of pressure is a factor that greatly affects performance and stability during stack pretreatment and operation, and requires precise control thereof. 1 is a schematic diagram of a fuel cell using a hydraulic cylinder, (a) is a case using the upper hydraulic cylinder, (b) is a case using the lower hydraulic cylinder. As shown in FIG. 1, in the case of a
Meanwhile, in order to solve the problems caused by the above-described thermal expansion, in the case of the electrolyte fuel cell (PEMFC), which is a low temperature fuel cell, a surface pressure is adjusted by using a string at a bolt / nut region. In addition, a molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC), which is a kind of high-temperature fuel cell but has a lower operating temperature than a solid oxide fuel cell, uses a special spring. However, the spring functioning at the operating temperature of the solid oxide fuel cell is difficult to manufacture, there is a problem that it is difficult to commercialize the high production cost even if possible.
Accordingly, there is an urgent need for the development of a fuel cell capable of solving the above-described thermal expansion problem while having a low manufacturing price.

2 is a perspective view showing an example of a solid oxide fuel cell using a fastening rod and a bolt / nut. Hereinafter, the present invention will be described with reference to Fig.
As shown in FIG. 2, the solid
As described above, in the case of a low-cost commercial fuel cell that does not have an active surface pressure control device such as a hydraulic or pneumatic cylinder, the length of the fastening rod connecting the upper and lower end plates is changed and the height inside the stack is changed. At this time, due to the difference in thermal expansion between the components according to the change in temperature, a difference occurs in the change in the length of the fastening rod and the change in the height of the stack. This is soon manifested as a change in surface pressure, making it difficult to maintain the desired level of surface pressure.
3 is a cross-sectional view showing the concept of the surface pressure change of the fuel cell due to thermal expansion, (a) is a case where the proper surface pressure is maintained, (b) is a case where the surface pressure is insufficient, (c) is a case where the surface pressure is excessive. As shown in FIG. 3 (a), in order to achieve stable driving of the fuel cell, an appropriate surface pressure must be maintained uniformly. However, there is a difference in the change due to thermal expansion between the stack and the fastening rods. In this case, when the length of the fastening rods is larger than the stack, the surface pressure acts on the stack as shown in FIG. The electrical contact between the elements is bad, or the sealing material is damaged due to tensile stress, which causes a problem of poor gas sealability. On the contrary, when the length of the fastening rod is changed less, the surface pressure is excessively applied to the stack, which causes problems such as damage to components inside the stack.
In order to solve the above problems, the present invention provides a solid oxide fuel cell having a buffer layer in at least one position between the lower end plate and the stack and between the upper end plate and the stack. The buffer layer is to overcome the difference in length change due to the difference in the coefficient of thermal expansion of the fastening rod and the stack when the solid oxide fuel cell is driven.
4 is a schematic diagram showing the correction effect of the height change difference between the fastening rod and the stack by the insertion of the buffer layer, (a) is a case where the fastening rod has a higher coefficient of thermal expansion than the stack, (b) is a fastening rod is lower than the stack The case of having a thermal expansion coefficient is shown. As mentioned above, when the fastening rod has a higher coefficient of thermal expansion than the stack, the fastening rod deforms more than the stack due to the difference in height, resulting in insufficient surface pressure and lowering the surface pressure uniformity. However, in the present invention, as shown in FIG. 4 (a) by inserting the
That is, in the fuel cell provided by the present invention, the thermal expansion coefficient K1 of the fastening rod, the thermal expansion coefficient K2 of the stack, and the thermal expansion coefficient K3 of the buffer layer of the components must satisfy the following equations (1) and (2).

Further, when the height of the stack at room temperature is referred to as H 0 , and the height of the buffer layer at room temperature is referred to as H, the height H of the buffer layer for maintaining a constant surface pressure at elevated temperature for a given K3, or the height H of the given buffer layer. The thermal expansion coefficient K3 of the buffer layer for maintaining a constant surface pressure at elevated temperature can be obtained as in
[식 3] K3>K1>K2일 경우, H = H0(K1-K2)/(K3-K1), 또는 K3 = K1 + (K1-K2)H0/HWhen K3>K1> K2, H = H 0 (K 1 -K 2 ) / (K 3 -K 1 ), or K 3 = K 1 + (K 1 -K 2 ) H 0 / H

Fastening rods or stacks that can be applied to the present invention may have a variety of types, and thus the fastening rods or stacks may have various coefficients of thermal expansion. Therefore, the buffer layer that can be applied to the present invention may be used without any limitation as long as it satisfies the relationship of
On the other hand, compared to a fastening rod which is usually processed in a single material, that is, thermal expansion is linearly proportional to the temperature change, a thermal expansion due to temperature change may occur nonlinearly in a stack having a stack structure of several components. In order to cope with such a nonlinear thermal expansion structure, the present invention may include two or more buffer layers between the lower end plate and the stack, between the upper end plate and the stack, or both regions, wherein the buffer layers are different from each other. May have coefficients. As such, by inserting a buffer layer having a multi-layered structure having different thermal expansion rates, it is possible to compensate for the difference in height change between the stack and the fastening rod. For example, when the type and size of the stack and the fastening rod for constituting the fuel cell are determined, the buffer layer to be inserted may be determined according to the difference in the coefficient of thermal expansion of the stack and the fastening rod. However, there is a disadvantage that a buffer layer that can completely compensate for the height change due to the difference in thermal expansion coefficient of the stack and the fastening rod does not exist or may be expensive. This is because the thermal expansion coefficient of the buffer layer is also determined by the inherent properties of the material. In the present invention, as described above, two or more buffer layers are provided. By having a coefficient, it is possible to further improve the correction effect of the height change according to the difference in the thermal expansion coefficient of the stack and the fastening rod. Of course, even if two or more buffer layers having different thermal expansion coefficients are applied, it is preferable that the buffer layer satisfies the above-described conditions of
As described above, in the solid oxide fuel cell provided by the present invention, the surface pressure can be kept constant by correcting the difference in height change due to the difference in thermal expansion coefficient between the fastening rod and the stack by inserting a buffer layer, thereby providing stable driving and durability. Can be secured. In addition, since it is not necessary to use a surface pressure maintaining device such as a hydraulic pressure or a pneumatic cylinder, manufacturing cost can be reduced, and a wide range of material selection can be provided, thereby allowing diversity in the design of a fuel cell during mass production.
