Abstract

Systems and methods are disclosed for reducing noise induced in certain regions or levels of signal bandwidth. By redesigning this data to create a buffer area adjacent to an area having little or no data therein, the area is separated from the rest of the signal data. The signal is then sent to the output device, where all data in the buffer area is thought to be the result of noise and is remapped to a preset level. The signal data is inversely redesigned to move the data back into the buffer area. In this way, rather, the data entered at the preset level will also be behind the preset level, thereby correcting the noise induced at that level by a noise-induced transmission technique such as JPEG compression.

The following patents or patent applications filed by the applicant or assignee of the present invention are incorporated herein by reference.
Electronic signal processing will usually introduce some noise level into the output signal. In the transmission of signals, the noise induced is often due to a 'lossy' transmission method. Ordinary workers will understand that 'lossy' refers to a processing technique that moves some signal data to an approximate data value.
Multiloss signal compression techniques make transmissions faster and more efficient, but introduce noise when the transmitted signals are compressed. This noise level can be controlled and limited to levels that are acceptable for most transmissions. However, there are examples where signal data at one or more specific levels within a bandwidth is more important than others. Instead, noise at a particular level of bandwidth has a more harmful effect than when it is at another level of bandwidth. Activation of the compression technique can be set to allow noise in these critical parts to be acceptable, but at this time most of the bandwidth is just lightly compressed and the data size is still large. Maintaining a large data size tends to frustrate the purpose of compressing the signal first of all.
연속 계조(contone) 이미지 데이터의 JPEG(Joint Photographic Experts Group) 압축은 다손실 신호 압축 기술의 일 예이다. Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) compression of continuous tone image data is an example of a multiloss signal compression technique. Noise caused by JPEG compression in certain portions of the bandwidth can cause artifacts that are particularly visible in the decompressed image. Because of the relevance to the present invention, the detailed description is directed to localized noise reduction in compression and decompression of image files. However, it will be understood that this is purely illustrative and that the present invention encompasses other forms of signal transmission.
JPEG compression of image data uses one of a set of standard algorithms to reduce data size for faster transfer and more efficient storage. The quality of the image as a result is determined by the level of compression. Aggressive compression greatly reduces file size but results in high levels of noise. Light compression reduces noise but the data size is still relatively large. Thus, an optimal level of compression is one tradeoff between image quality and data size, taking into account the characteristics of the output device (printer or monitor), processing power and resolution requirements.
During JPEG compression, the image is analyzed into blocks of 8x8 pixels. Depending on the compression level chosen, the details in each block are reduced. In more aggressive compression, 8 × 8 blocks can be visualized in the final image. Compression should be at a level where no noise in the final image can be detected. Unfortunately, there are often some constructs in the image that are much lower than the rest of the image for the decompressed artifact. In these cases, noise cannot be detected for most images, but produces artifacts in some parts.
Noise dip regions are clear edges between strongly contrasting colors, such as text on a white background. 1 is an image of a
도 3은 도 1이 JPEG 압축되고 압축해제된 후의 도 1의 이미지를 보여준다. 압축 동안에 손실된 상세는 흑색 형상(10)의 주변 둘레에 랜덤 그레이 스케일 인공물들(14)로 나타난다. 그레이 스케일 인공물들은 또한 흑색 형상(10) 내에 존재하지만 주변의 흑색에 의해 가려진다. 인공물들(14)은 상기 형상과 백색 배경 사이의 경계선을 넘는 8×8 픽셀 블록들로 한정된다. 이러한 인공물들은 JPEG 'ringing'으로 지칭된다.3 shows the image of FIG. 1 after FIG. 1 is JPEG compressed and decompressed. 도 4는 도 3에 대한 히스토그램을 보여준다. 대부분의 픽셀들이 레벨 0 또는 255(백색 또는 흑색)인 반면, 노이즈는 두 개의 말단(16,18) 근처의 레벨로 나타난다. 압축이 픽셀 색상 레벨에 있어서 단지 작은 이동만을 야기하는 경향이 있기 때문에 노이즈는 히스토그램의 양끝으로 제한된다. 통상적인(normal) 사진 이미지에 있어서, 각 색상 평면에서의 농도 레벨의 모두는 아니라 할지라도 대부분은 약간의 픽셀들을 갖는다. 압축으로부터의 노이즈는 색상 레벨을 최초의 레벨로부터 아주 멀리 이동시키지 않고, 다른 색상 평면과 혼합하며, 그래서 인공물들이 높은 공간 주파수에서 발생한다. 눈은 작은 색상 레벨 변화로 이루어진 고주파 노이즈에 둔감하다. 인공물들이 가시화될 수 있는 장소는 오직 강하게 대비되는 색상들 사이의 선명한 에지들 뿐이다.4 shows a histogram for FIG. 3. 따라서 본 발명은 신호 데이터를 출력 장치에 의한 사용을 위해 처리될 입력 신호의 대역폭 내에 미리 설정된 레벨로 보존하는 방법을 제공하며, 그 방법은, 적어도 얼마간의 신호 데이터를 상기 미리 설정된 레벨에 인접한 대역폭의 버퍼 영역(buffer section)의 외부로 이동시키기 위하여 상기 신호 데이터를 상기 미리 설정된 레벨과 다른 레벨로 재설계하는 단계;The present invention thus provides a method of preserving signal data at a predetermined level within a bandwidth of an input signal to be processed for use by an output device, the method comprising at least some signal data of a bandwidth adjacent to the preset level. Redesigning the signal data to a level different from the preset level to move out of a buffer section;
출력 장치에 의한 사용을 위해 상기 신호 데이터를 처리하는 단계;Processing the signal data for use by an output device;
Reallocating any data in the buffer area to the preset level; And
Redesigning the signal data to a level different from the preset level to move data back into the buffer region.
Inaccuracy in signal processing changes some signal data from its initial level in the input signal to another level in the output signal. This change in data produces noise in the output signal. If the data is changed due to signal processing, it is highly likely that it will only change to the level of the neighbor immediately within the bandwidth. If a particular level of signal data is more important with respect to most other levels (signal data), then the present invention provides that such data is preserved at its initial level, even if very little, if not affected by noise. Allow.
By redesigning the input signal, most or all of the data at a level near the critical level can be moved away. This effectively creates a buffer on one or both sides of the critical level to isolate data at this level from the rest of the signal data. Any noise caused in the data from the critical level is limited to (possibly) empty buffers and can therefore be easily corrected. By rearranging all the data in the buffer back to a critical level, the induced noise is removed. Once the data in the buffer is rearranged back to the critical level, the initial redesign of the input signal can be reversed to distribute the signal data over the full bandwidth.
Optionally, the input signal is image data for the color plane of one image and the output device is a printer. In the present embodiments, the signal data is the pixel density value for the color plane quantized to many individual density levels such that the number of levels is the bandwidth of the input signal. In a more preferred form of the embodiments, the preset level is a density level corresponding to 'white (or zero color intensity)'. Optionally, the method preserves the data at a second preset level, the second preset level being the maximum concentration level in the bandwidth.
Advantageously, said signal processing comprises multiloss transmission of signal data. In a more preferred form, the signal processing includes lossy compression of the signal data. In a still more preferred form, the signal processing includes multilossy compression of the image. In a particularly preferred form, the signal processing comprises JPEG compression.
Optionally, the input signal is redesigned by quantizing the image data to a smaller number of individual density levels except the image data at the or each preset level. In a preferred form, the image data is redesigned to the flow point value and then rounded up to the nearest value of the concentration level.
In a particularly preferred form, the method further comprises converting the image data from the first color space to the second color space. Here, the redesign of the input image data is performed simultaneously with the color space conversion. Optionally, redesigning the image data back to the or each buffer area after JPEG compression is performed by adjusting the threshold in the dither matrix via a dither matrix.
As discussed in the background of the invention, FIG. 1 shows an
When the image of FIG. 1 is JPEG compressed for efficient transmission and subsequently decompressed at the output device, the edges of the shape (image) 10 are surrounded by
5 shows a setup for histogram extension to remove most of the noise. Those skilled in the art will understand that histogram expansion redesigns input data by reducing the number of levels in the bandwidth. In FIG. 5, levels 1-16 are placed down to
It will also be appreciated that the buffers do not have to be the same size or located symmetrically in the signal bandwidth. It should also be noted that the buffers need not be at both ends of the bandwidth. For example, if the signal is image data in the YCC-style color space (luminance, chroma red, chroma blue), the important data in the chroma channel is the mid-level of the bandwidth (8-bit color values). 128). Important data in the luminance channel is located at both ends.
While the image of FIG. 1 only has data at levels '0' and '255', most images have a much wider data distribution, usually covering the entire bandwidth. 7 is a schematic diagram of a histogram corresponding to a continuous grayscale image such as a photograph. The image has some pixels at all levels of 0-255 bandwidth. For storage and transmission, images are typically JPEG compressed and then decompressed at the output device. Depending on the quality of the JPEG compression chosen, the number of pixels at the output levels should be approximately equal to the number of pixels at the corresponding input levels. Some errors that occur will probably push pixels directly into neighboring levels, which occur at high frequencies such that noise cannot be detected. The exception to this is the components of the clear edge of the image, such as text on a white background or line art. The eye tends to record noise generated in 8x8 pixel blocks that span or include the edges.
In these areas, all pixels at level '0' in the input image should be preserved as pixels at level '0' in the output image to avoid visible spreading. Likewise, pixels at level '255' in the input image should remain at that level in the output image, even though this is usually a less visible artifact.
The quality of the JPEG compression is known, so the area on the bandwidth where most noise is caused in
8 shows image data moved out of
Lr = Ll + Li(Lh - Ll)/((Lmax -1) - Lmin) (식 1)L r = L l + L i (L h -L l ) / ((L max -1)-L min ) (Equation 1)
여기서:here:
Lr은 입력 레벨의 픽셀들이 맵핑된 재설계된 레벨이고;L r is the redesigned level at which pixels of the input level are mapped;
Ll은 대역폭의 하단부에서의 버퍼 영역의 경계(threshold)이며;L l is the threshold of the buffer area at the bottom of the bandwidth;
Lh는 대역폭의 상단부에서의 버퍼 영역의 경계이고;L h is the boundary of the buffer area at the top of the bandwidth;
Li는 재설계될 입력 레벨이며;L i is the input level to be redesigned;
Lmax는 대역폭의 상부 말단이고;L max is the upper end of the bandwidth;
L min is the lower end of the bandwidth.
In the example shown in Figures 7-10, L max = 255, L min = 0, L l = 16, and L h = 239. Therefore,
Lr = 16 + 0.878Li L r = 16 + 0.878L i
L r can be rounded to the nearest integer or left as a floating point value to more accurately invert the redesign process when the input data is redistributed over the entire bandwidth.
9 shows a histogram corresponding to the image data after the image data has been JPEG compressed, transmitted to the output device, and subsequently decompressed.
Once the noise at
It should also be noted that manipulation of such image data can be accomplished in a quantitatively efficient manner by combining it with existing data processing steps. The redesign of the signal for moving data out of the buffer area can be done when the image data is a color space converted from RGB to CMY (K). Furthermore, redistribution of data over the entire bandwidth can be done by adjusting the threshold value used in the dither matrix during halftoning. Applicant's pending USSN (KIP001US), incorporated herein by reference, will explain how histograms can be expanded (or shrunk) using a dither matrix. In this respect, the quantitative cost of preserving data at one or more levels in bandwidth is relatively inexpensive, but nevertheless significant image quality improvement is significant. Thresholds within the compressed range in the second dither matrix are determined using equation (2).
Tnew = Ll + Told(Lh - Ll)/256 (식 2)T new = L l + T old (L h -L l ) / 256 (Equation 2)
Here, T new is a compressed threshold in the second dither matrix and T old is a compressed threshold in the first dither matrix.
The adjusted dither matrix will not affect data at both ends of the bandwidth. Because
As discussed above, noise on a white background with a clear edge is more visible than noise in the entire color gamut along the edge. This is especially true when the output device is a printer. In this regard, only
In other embodiments, the input signal is redesigned in a manner different from that described in
