Description
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION 1. Field of the Invention The present invention relates to a plasma display panel, and more particularly, to a high frequency plasma display panel which reduces leakage current and reduces cross talk between cells in a high frequency plasma display panel that generates sustain discharge by a high frequency signal.
Recently, flat display devices such as liquid crystal displays (hereinafter referred to as LCDs), field emission displays (hereinafter referred to as FEDs), and plasma display panels (hereinafter referred to as PDPs) have been used. Among them, PDP has the advantages of being easy to manufacture due to its simple structure, excellent brightness and luminous efficiency, memory function and having a wide viewing angle of 160 ° or more and a large screen of 40 inches or more.
Referring to FIG. 1, a conventional AC PDP includes a lower substrate 14 on which an address electrode 2 is mounted, and a lower dielectric thick film formed by coating a predetermined thickness on an upper portion of the lower substrate 14 to form wall charges. 18) and a sustain electrode pair 4 formed transparently on the upper substrate 16 to sustain and drive the discharge, and coated on the upper substrate 16 and the sustain electrode pair 4 to a predetermined thickness. And an upper dielectric thick film 12 which forms wall charges. The conventional PDP structure will be described in detail. A stripe-shaped partition wall 8 is formed between the lower substrate 14 and the upper substrate 16 to divide each discharge cell. In addition, the sustain electrode pairs 4 are arranged side by side on the upper substrate 16. In this case, a bus electrode 19 is provided below the sustain electrode pair 4. On the upper dielectric thick film 12, a protective layer 10 is applied to protect the upper dielectric thick film 12 from sputtering by plasma discharge. On the other hand, the address substrate 2 is disposed on the lower substrate 14 so as to be orthogonal to the sustain electrode pair 4. A partition 8 is formed at a predetermined height above the lower dielectric thick film 18. The phosphor 6 coated on the partition 8 and the lower dielectric thick film 18 is excited by vacuum ultra-violet (UVU) to generate visible light. On the other hand, the PDP displays an image or an image by ADS (Address and Display Seperated) in which address discharge and sustain discharge are distinguished as follows. When a predetermined driving voltage Va is applied between the address electrode 6 and the sustain electrode pair 4, the corresponding discharge cell is addressed. Subsequently, when a predetermined driving voltage Vs is applied between the sustain electrode pairs 4, plasma discharge is caused by electrons emitted from the sustain electrode pairs 4 of the addressed discharge cells. The vacuum ultraviolet rays generated in this process excite the phosphors of red (hereinafter referred to as R), green (hereinafter referred to as G) and blue (hereinafter referred to as B) and emit light emitted from the phosphor. The upper substrate 16 is transmitted through the silver protective layer 10, the upper dielectric thick film 12, and the sustain electrode pair 4. The step brightness required for displaying an image, that is, gray scale, is implemented by adjusting the number of sustain discharges. Accordingly, the number of sustain discharges is recognized as an important factor for determining the brightness and discharge efficiency of the PDP. In fact, in the AC type PDP, a pulse signal of 10 to 100 kHz is normally applied periodically to perform sustain discharge. The sustain discharge only occurs once at a very short moment per sustain pulse. Accordingly, in the AC-type PDP, the actual discharge time during the sustain discharge is very short, and most of the other time is consumed in the preparation of the wall charge and the preparation for the next discharge.
In order to solve the poor discharge efficiency in the AC PDP as described above, a high frequency plasma display panel (hereinafter referred to as "RF PDP") has been proposed to generate a sustain discharge by a high frequency signal of several MHz to several hundred MHz.
Referring to FIG. 2, the RF PDP includes an upper substrate 72 on which a high frequency electrode 74 is formed, a lower substrate 60 on which a scan electrode 66 and a data electrode 62 are orthogonal to each other, and a lower substrate. A partition wall 68 extending vertically on 60 is provided. The high frequency electrode 74 is supplied with a high frequency signal for high frequency discharge during sustain discharge. The dielectric layer 73 is formed on the upper substrate 72 on which the high frequency electrode 74 is formed. The dielectric layer 73 serves to protect the high frequency electrode 74 from discharge and to accumulate wall charges. Data is supplied to the data electrode 62 in the address period. The first lower dielectric layer 64 is formed on the lower substrate 60 on which the data electrode 62 is formed. The first lower dielectric layer 64 electrically insulates the data electrode 62 from the scan electrode 66 and accumulates wall charges. The scan electrode 66 is formed on the first lower dielectric layer 64 in a direction parallel to the high frequency electrode 74 to cause an address discharge with the data electrode 62 in the address period and together with the high frequency electrode 74 during the sustain discharge. It will cause a high frequency discharge. The second lower dielectric layer 65 is formed on the entire surface of the first lower dielectric layer 64 on which the scan electrodes 66 are formed. A protective layer 67 is formed on the second lower dielectric layer 65 to lower the discharge voltage by emitting the dielectric layer protection and secondary electrons during discharge. Discharge gas is injected into the discharge space 76 provided by the upper substrate 72, the lower substrate 60, and the partition wall 68. The partition wall 68 is formed in a lattice form to divide the discharge space in units of cells. The phosphor 70 is applied only to the partition wall 70 so as not to interfere with the address discharge between the scan electrode 66 and the data electrode 62 and to transmit visible light through the upper substrate 72.
In the RF PDP, a case of displaying an image or an image by the ADS method will be described below. First, an AC signal is applied to the data electrode 62 and the scan electrode 66 of a cell to be selected during the address period, so that address discharge occurs in the corresponding cell. At this time, video data is supplied to the data electrode 62, and a scan pulse is synchronized with the video data to the scan electrode 62. By this address discharge, charged particles are generated in the discharge space 76. On the other hand, since the high frequency signal is always applied to the high frequency electrode 74, among the charged particles formed during the address discharge, electrons vibrate in the discharge space 76 according to the electric field of the high frequency signal. The vibrating electrons excite the discharge gas continuously, and the ultraviolet rays generated at this time emit the phosphor 70. In order to cancel this high frequency discharge, a positive erase pulse signal having a level less than a voltage capable of causing a discharge is applied to the scan electrode 66 and the data electrode 62. Then, the electrons vibrating in the discharge space 76 move toward the scan electrode 66 and the data electrode 62 by the erase pulse and lose energy due to recombination with the positive charge or collision with the lower dielectric layer 65. do.
The RF PDP has a high discharge voltage because the thickness of the dielectric layers 64 and 65 between the scan electrode 66 and the data electrode 62 is thick. In addition, since the dielectric layers 64 and 65 are applied by a number of screen printing processes, the surface is uneven and the thickness of the dielectric layer is uneven. This leads to poor discharge uniformity.
According to the method disclosed in Korean Patent Application No. 99-21877 filed by the present applicant in order to solve the problem of the RF PDP, as shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, the data electrode 62 and the scan electrode 66 are separated from each other. By patterning the first lower dielectric layer 84 in a line form, it is possible to lower the discharge voltage and improve discharge uniformity. The first lower dielectric layer pattern 84 is patterned in a line shape in a direction orthogonal to the data electrode 62, and a scan electrode 66 is formed on the first lower dielectric layer pattern 84. The second lower dielectric layer 65 and the passivation layer 67 are stacked on the lower substrate 60 on which the data electrode 62, the first lower dielectric layer pattern 84, and the scan electrode 66 are formed. Since the thickness of the dielectric layer on the discharge path becomes thin due to the first lower dielectric layer pattern 84, the discharge voltage can be reduced, and the first lower dielectric layer pattern 84 can be used in consideration of the reliability of the dielectric layer and the reduction of leakage current without increasing the discharge voltage. The thickness of the lower dielectric layer pattern 84 may be increased. That is, since the leakage current caused by the dielectric layer is inversely proportional to the thickness of the dielectric layer, the thickness of the first lower dielectric layer pattern 84 can be reduced to reduce the leakage current. It doesn't work.
On the other hand, if the dielectric layer is patterned in the form of a line as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 there is a problem that it is difficult to form a high partition wall 68 required for high frequency discharge. In general, it is difficult to form the high partition wall 68 by the method of extending from the lower substrate 60. Accordingly, after the high partition wall 68 is formed separately from the upper plate and the lower plate, the partition wall 68 is joined to the lower substrate. However, since a step exists on the lower substrate 60 by the first lower dielectric layer pattern 84, a gap 90 exists between the partition wall 68 and the lower substrate 60 as shown in FIG. 5. Through this gap 90, the charged particles or charges 92 generated at the address discharge or the high frequency discharge are diffused toward the adjacent discharge cells. Accordingly, electrical and optical crosstalk is generated between adjacent discharge cells during discharge, resulting in uneven discharge.
Accordingly, an object of the present invention is to provide an RF PDP which reduces leakage current and reduces crosstalk between cells.

In order to achieve the above object, the RF PDP according to the present invention includes a first and second electrodes causing an address discharge, and a dielectric layer pattern patterned in islands between the first and second electrodes.
Other objects and features of the present invention other than the above object will become apparent from the description of the embodiments with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Referring to Figures 6 to 8 will be described a preferred embodiment of the present invention.
6 and 7, the RF PDP according to the present invention includes a lower dielectric layer 102 in which a portion covered at the intersection of the data electrode 62 and the scan electrode 66 is raised. A dielectric layer pattern 106 patterned in a rectangular island shape is formed on the data electrode 62 at the intersection with the scan electrode 66. The dielectric layer pattern 106 electrically insulates the scan electrode 66 from the data electrode 62. Due to the dielectric layer pattern 106, only the lower dielectric layer 102 and the protective layer 104 exist on the discharge path between the data electrode 62 and the scan electrode 66. Can be lowered by more than%. The thickness of the dielectric layer pattern 106 can be adjusted to minimize leakage current by the dielectric layer. In this case, since the thickness of the lower dielectric layer 102 existing on the discharge path between the data electrode 62 and the scan electrode 66 does not become thick, the discharge voltage does not increase. The scan electrode 66 is formed on the dielectric layer pattern 106 and the lower substrate 60 in a direction orthogonal to the data electrode 62. The lower dielectric layer 102 and the protective layer 104 are stacked on the lower substrate 60 on which the scan electrodes 66 are formed. Accordingly, the lower dielectric layer 102 and the protective layer 104 are raised by the thickness of the dielectric layer pattern 106. The raised portion 100 is positioned at the intersection of the scan electrode 66 and the data electrode 62, that is, at the bottom center of the discharge space 76 in a rectangular island shape by the dielectric layer pattern 106. On the other hand, the upper plate of the RF PDP shown in FIG. 6 is substantially the same as that of the RF PDP shown in FIG. 2, so that the high frequency electrode 74 and the upper dielectric layer 73 are formed on the upper substrate 72. The partition wall 68 is formed in a lattice form to prevent diffusion of electric charges and charges between adjacent discharge cells during high frequency discharge. The partition wall 68 is formed high so as to provide a vibrating motion section of the electron during high frequency discharge and then bonded. Since no step exists in the bonding surface of the partition wall 68 on the lower substrate 60, there is no gap between the lower substrate 60 and the partition wall 68. Accordingly, diffusion of charged particles or charges between adjacent discharge cells is blocked by the partition wall 68 during discharge, thereby preventing crosstalk between adjacent discharge cells. The phosphor 70 is coated on the partition wall 68. Discharge gas is injected into the discharge space 76 provided between the upper substrate 72, the lower substrate 60, and the partition wall 68.
The dielectric layer pattern 106 may be formed by a photolithography process or a screen printing process in which a dielectric layer is entirely coated on the lower substrate 60, and then a mask pattern is formed and then etched.
8A through 8D illustrate a method of manufacturing a lower plate of the RF PDP shown in FIG. 6 in steps.
First, as illustrated in FIG. 8A, the data electrode line pattern 62L is formed on the lower substrate 60 by a screen printing or photolithography process. On the substrate 60 on which the data electrode line pattern 62L is formed, a mask pattern is formed as shown in FIG. 8B, and screen-printed a dielectric layer material to form an island-shaped dielectric layer pattern 106. Subsequently, a scan electrode line pattern 66L is formed on the dielectric layer pattern 106 so as to be orthogonal to the data electrode line pattern 62L as shown in FIG. 8C. Finally, as shown in FIG. 8D, the lower dielectric layer 102 and the protective layer 104 are sequentially coated on the lower substrate 60 on which the data electrode line pattern 62L and the scan electrode line pattern 66L are formed.
As described above, the RF PDP according to the present invention forms an island patterned dielectric layer pattern between the data electrode and the scan electrode at the intersection of the data electrode and the scan electrode to reduce the leakage current between the data electrode and the scan electrode. In addition, it is possible to reduce the crosstalk between the cells by removing the step between the junction surface of the substrate and the partition wall. Furthermore, the RF PDP according to the present invention can lower the discharge voltage by making the thickness of the dielectric layer on the discharge path thin.
