Abstract
Provided are a lens for optical communication, an optical communication module using the same, and a molding die that can improve moldability, suppress contamination and the like in a manufacturing process, and further reduce costs. After the material is cooled, the movable mold MM is displaced so as to be integrally moved away from the fixed mold FM. At this time, the mating surface FM3 of the fixed mold FM is at a position of Δ2 = L / 10 to L / 2 in the optical axis direction from the innermost side of the fixed mold FM, so that the molded product is stretched to the movable mold MM side. It is in a state of being attached. Further, even if burrs occur on the parting line, there is little risk that broken burrs will adhere to the lens optical surface. Furthermore, since the mating surface FM3 of the fixed mold FM is set at a position of Δ2 = L / 10 to L / 2 in the optical axis direction from the innermost side of the fixed mold FM, the gate GT can be separated from the optical surface S2. In the cutting of the gate or the polishing process, it is possible to suppress the plastic piece and the polishing portion from adhering to the optical surface S2.
Description
The present invention is used for optical communication and the like, for example, an optical communication lens and an optical communication module for coupling light from an optical element such as a semiconductor laser to an optical fiber or a light receiving element, and a molding die suitable for manufacturing such a lens. About.
In optical communication or the like, a lens for optical coupling is used for efficient optical coupling between a semiconductor laser or a light receiving element and an optical fiber. By the way, in the conventional lens for optical coupling, the structure which mainly supports a glass lens with a stainless steel leg part is widely used. However, a glass lens having an aspheric surface is generally expensive, and there is a problem that a significant cost is incurred due to a process of assembling with a leg portion made of different materials. Therefore, as shown in
By the way, in the leg-integrated lens of
Such a leg-integrated lens is generally cylindrical in order to secure a space for incorporating a light-emitting element or a light-receiving element therein, and light emitted from the light-emitting element can be emitted according to required specifications. In many cases, it is necessary to design a wide space for reaching the lens optical surface or a space for the light collected by the lens optical surface to reach the light receiving element. Therefore, the length of the cylindrical part (referred to as the leg part) is determined by the total length of the light emitting element or the light receiving element and the distance required for the diffusion or condensing of the light. There arises a problem that the releasability from the mold deteriorates.
Further, since the lens for optical communication is intended for long-distance optical communication via an optical fiber, the transmission efficiency is remarkably deteriorated even if the performance is deteriorated due to slight contamination on the lens surface. For this reason, there is a situation that the level of demand for dirt is stricter than other lenses such as optical pickup lenses. However, when performing injection molding, it is essential to make it difficult to cut the lens from the runner, and it is also necessary to polish the separated part (gate). There is a possibility that the polishing powder generated sometimes adheres to the lens optical surface, and a process such as careful cleaning is required to satisfy the required level of contamination, which may increase the cost.
The present invention has been made in view of such problems, and an optical communication lens capable of improving moldability, suppressing contamination and the like in the manufacturing process, and further reducing the cost, and the use thereof. An object of the present invention is to provide an optical communication module and a molding die.
The lens for optical communication according to
The lens is obtained by molding a plastic material using a first mold and a second mold, and has a cylindrical leg portion and a lens portion formed at an end portion of the leg portion. And
When the total length in the optical axis direction of the lens is L, the parting lines of the first mold and the second mold are set to L / 10 to 10 from the lens end on the lens portion side in the optical axis direction. It is provided at the position of L / 2.
When the lens has a leg part, if the parting line is provided at the end of the lens on the lens part side in the optical axis direction, the extraction length and the extraction resistance when releasing the molded product from the mold for molding the leg part are reduced. There is a risk that the leg portion will be damaged. According to the present invention, when the total length in the optical axis direction of the lens is L, the parting line of the first mold and the second mold is connected to the lens on the lens portion side in the optical axis direction. By separating L / 10 or more from the end, it is possible to reduce the extraction length and the extraction resistance when releasing the molded product from the first mold, thereby avoiding the possibility of causing damage to the legs. Further, by separating the parting line from the lens end on the lens unit side in the optical axis direction by L / 10 or more, a plastic piece or polishing powder adheres to the lens optical surface when the gate is cut or polished. It is suppressed. However, “the lens end on the lens unit side in the optical axis direction” refers to a part of the lens unit that is farthest from the leg in the optical axis direction.
On the other hand, when the parting lines of the first mold and the second mold are separated by more than L / 2 from the lens end on the lens unit side in the optical axis direction, the second mold There is a possibility that the punching resistance is increased and the mold is released from the first mold, and the process is complicated. Therefore, by setting the parting line to L / 2 or less from the lens end on the lens portion side in the optical axis direction, it is urged to first release the molded product from the second mold. It becomes possible to secure the molding procedure. In general, the resistance of removing the leg portion is larger than that of releasing the lens portion. Therefore, if the parting line is set to L / 2 or less from the lens end, the second portion is first formed. Release from the mold. The first mold is preferably a movable mold, and the second mold is preferably a fixed mold.
According to a second aspect of the present invention, in the optical communication lens according to the first aspect of the present invention, in the parting line, any one of the parting line and an optical surface end surface on the lens end side of the lens unit may be used. The outer diameter is smaller than the outer diameter.
At the time of general injection molding, it is said that the thicker the portion, the greater the shrinkage during material cooling. In the present invention, the lens unit has an outer diameter smaller than the outer diameter of the parting line in any part from the parting line to the lens end side optical surface end surface of the lens unit. The surrounding wall thickness can be suppressed, shrinkage of the lens part after molding can be suppressed, and a highly accurate lens part can be molded. Further, the volume of the entire lens is reduced, and the number of materials is reduced. In particular, it is preferable that the lenses have substantially the same shape on the circumference around the optical axis.
According to a third aspect of the present invention, in the optical communication lens according to the second aspect, a tapered surface is provided on an outer periphery of the lens between the lens end on the lens unit side and the parting line. It is characterized by being.
When the lens is incorporated in an optical communication module, a cylindrical sleeve-shaped holder for attaching an optical fiber is often fitted to the outer periphery of the lens. By forming the tapered surface at the end of the lens as in the present invention, a guide for insertion into the holder is formed, and smooth insertion becomes possible. If the tapered surface is formed symmetrically around the optical axis, the lens portion is uniformly contracted after molding, and higher optical performance is ensured. In addition, by providing the tapered surface, the releasability from the second mold is improved.
According to a fourth aspect of the present invention, in the optical communication lens according to the second aspect, a curved surface is provided on an outer periphery of the lens between the lens end on the lens portion side and the parting line. It is characterized by.
According to the present invention, by forming the curved surface at the end of the lens, a guide for insertion into the holder is formed, and smooth insertion becomes possible. In addition, when the curved surface is formed symmetrically about the optical axis, the contraction of the lens portion after molding becomes uniform, and higher optical performance is ensured. Moreover, the mold release property from the second mold is improved by forming the curved surface.
According to a fifth aspect of the present invention, in the optical communication lens according to the second aspect, a step is provided on an outer periphery of the lens between the lens end on the lens portion side and the parting line. It is characterized by.
According to the present invention, the cost can be reduced by forming the step at the end of the lens.
If the steps are formed symmetrically around the optical axis, the contraction of the lens part after molding becomes uniform, and higher optical performance is ensured.
The lens for optical communication according to claim 6 is the invention according to any one of
When a light beam directed from the light emitting element or the optical fiber toward the lens unit is incident on the periphery of the lens unit, it may become stray light and cause noise. According to the present invention, since the outer periphery of the lens between the lens end and the parting line is a roughened surface, the occurrence of stray light can be suppressed by diffusing incident light. In particular, when the entire circumference is roughened, all the light that does not pass through the lens is diffused, so that not only stray light can be suppressed, but there is no need to consider light reflection due to the shape of the lens. Therefore, the lens design becomes easy. In addition, by providing an appropriate roughened surface, there is an effect of improving releasability.
The optical communication lens according to claim 7 is the invention according to any one of
The gate portion communicates with a position corresponding to the outer peripheral surface of the leg portion. When the gate portion is provided so as not to face a position corresponding to the inner peripheral surface of the leg portion, the resin flowing in from the gate portion is Further, since the inner surface of the leg is transferred to the surface of the mold to which the inner peripheral surface is transferred, it is filled smoothly and more appropriate molding can be performed.
An optical communication module according to an eighth aspect is characterized in that the optical communication lens according to any one of the first to seventh aspects is assembled to a substrate supporting an optical element.
The mold according to claim 9 is a mold structure for molding a lens for optical communication that collects a light beam emitted from an optical element or an optical fiber, and includes a movable mold and a fixed mold,
The lens is obtained by molding a plastic material using the movable mold and the fixed mold, and has a cylindrical leg portion and a lens portion formed at an end portion of the leg portion. ,
One optical surface of the leg portion and the lens portion is molded by the movable mold, and the other optical surface of the lens portion is molded by the fixed mold,
When the total length in the optical axis direction of the lens is L, the mating surface of the fixed mold with the movable mold is L in the optical axis direction from the position farthest from the mating surface on the transfer surface of the fixed mold. It is provided at a position of / 10 to L / 2.
When the lens formed by the movable mold and the fixed mold has a leg portion, the movable mold for molding the leg portion is provided by providing a parting line at the lens end side of the lens in the optical axis direction. When the molded product is released from the mold, the extraction length and resistance are increased, which may cause damage to the legs. According to the present invention, when the total length in the optical axis direction of the lens is L, the mating surface of the fixed mold with the movable mold is the farthest position from the mating surface of the transfer surface of the fixed mold. By separating more than L / 10, it is possible to reduce the extraction length and the extraction resistance when releasing the molded product from the movable mold, thereby avoiding the possibility of causing damage to the legs. Further, the mating surface of the fixed mold with the movable mold is separated by L / 10 or more from a position farthest from the mating surface on the transfer surface of the fixed mold, so that the position of the gate is that of the fixed mold. Since it is farther than the optical surface, it is possible to suppress the plastic piece and the polishing powder from adhering to the lens optical surface when the gate is cut or polished. Further, when a burr generated in the parting line is broken, there is little possibility of adhering to the lens optical surface.
On the other hand, if the mating surface of the fixed mold with the movable mold is separated by more than L / 2 from the position farthest from the mating surface on the transfer surface of the fixed mold, the pulling resistance of the fixed mold is reduced. There is a risk that the product may remain in the fixed mold during mold release. Therefore, by first setting the mating surface of the fixed mold with the movable mold within L / 2 from the position farthest from the mating surface on the transfer surface of the fixed mold, the molding is first performed from the fixed mold. A predetermined molding procedure can be ensured, such as prompting the product to be released and then releasing the product from the movable mold. In general, since the resistance to pulling out the leg portion is larger than releasing the lens portion, the mating surface of the fixed die with the movable die is located on the transfer surface of the fixed die. If the distance is within L / 2 from the position farthest from the mating surface, the mold is first released from the fixed mold.
According to a tenth aspect of the present invention, in the molding die according to the ninth aspect, the dimension in the direction perpendicular to the optical axis of the transfer surface of the fixed die is smaller than the mating surface with the movable die. It is characterized by being.
At the time of general injection molding, it is said that the thicker the portion, the greater the shrinkage during material cooling. In the present invention, since the dimension perpendicular to the optical axis of the transfer surface of the fixed mold is made smaller than the mating surface with the movable mold, the thickness of the flange portion in the molded lens can be suppressed. Thus, shrinkage of the lens part after molding can be suppressed, and a highly accurate lens part can be molded. Further, the volume of the entire lens is reduced, and the number of materials is reduced.
The molding die according to
When the lens is incorporated in an optical communication module, a cylindrical sleeve-shaped holder for attaching an optical fiber is often fitted to the outer periphery of the lens. As in the present invention, by providing a taper surface transfer surface on the back side from the mating surface with the movable mold on the transfer surface of the fixed mold, a tapered taper surface is transferred to the lens. A guide for insertion into the holder is formed, enabling smooth insertion. In addition, when the taper surface transfer surface is formed to be axisymmetric, the contraction of the lens portion after molding becomes uniform, and higher optical performance is ensured. In addition, by providing the tapered surface transfer surface, the releasability from the fixed mold is improved.
The molding die according to
According to the present invention, on the transfer surface of the fixed mold, by providing a curved transfer surface on the back side from the mating surface with the movable mold, a tapered curved surface is transferred to the lens. As a guide when inserting, smooth insertion becomes possible. If the curved transfer surface is formed to be axially symmetric, the contraction of the lens portion after molding becomes uniform, and higher optical performance is ensured. In addition, by forming the curved transfer surface, the releasability from the fixed mold is improved.
According to a thirteenth aspect of the present invention, the molding die according to the tenth aspect of the invention is characterized in that, on the transfer surface of the fixed die, a step transfer surface is provided on the back side from the mating surface with the movable die. And
According to the present invention, in the transfer surface of the fixed mold, by providing a step transfer surface on the back side from the mating surface with the movable mold, a step with a reduced diameter is transferred to the lens. Cost reduction can be achieved. If the step transfer surface is axisymmetrically formed, the contraction of the lens portion after molding becomes uniform, and higher optical performance is ensured.
A molding die according to a fourteenth aspect is the invention according to any one of the ninth to thirteenth aspects, wherein the transfer surface of the fixed mold has a roughened surface around the transfer surface to which the other optical surface is transferred. Is formed.
When a light beam directed from the light emitting element or the optical fiber toward the lens unit is incident on the periphery of the lens unit, it may become stray light and cause noise. According to the present invention, in the transfer surface of the fixed mold, since the rough surface is provided around the transfer surface for transferring the other optical surface, the outer periphery of the flange portion transferred thereby becomes a rough surface, Generation of stray light can be suppressed by diffusing incident light.

The molding die according to claim 16 is the invention according to any one of claims 9 to 15, wherein the movable die is relative to a main die for molding the leg portion and the main die. なお、光学素子としてはLED(Light Emitting Diode),LD(Laser Diode)、VCSEL(Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser)、などが用いられる。
Hereinafter, embodiments of the present invention will be described with reference to the drawings. FIG. 1 is a cross-sectional view in the optical axis direction of an

For example, the substantially optical axis direction includes the optical axis direction itself. In addition, when it is referred to as a substantially optical axis direction, it indicates a direction in which the inclination from the optical axis is 2 degrees or less.

(First embodiment)
FIG. 2 is a diagram showing lens manufacturing steps (a) to (d) suitable for the above-described embodiment. The fixed mold FM has a transfer surface FM1 for transferring the optical surface S2, a transfer surface (taper surface inclined surface) FM2 for transferring the
On the other hand, the movable mold MM that is movable with respect to the fixed mold FM has a main mold AM and a nested mold (sub mold) BM. The main mold AM has a transfer surface AM1 for transferring the
The cylindrical nested BM is fitted to the circular opening AM2, is movable with respect to the main mold AM, and has a transfer surface BM1 for transferring the optical surface S1 at the tip. The gate portion AM3 is provided on the mating surface of the movable mold MM with the fixed mold FM. The gate portion AM3 communicates with a position corresponding to the outer peripheral surface of the
The manufacturing process of the present embodiment will be described. First, as shown in FIG. 2A, the movable mold MM is clamped with respect to the fixed mold FM so that the mating surfaces FM3 and AM4 are brought into close contact with each other. .
The adhered surface forms a parting line. In this state, molten plastic (acrylic, PC, etc.) is injected into the internal cavity via the gate portion AM3. Further, as shown in FIG. 2B, after the material is cooled, the movable mold MM is displaced so as to be integrally moved away from the fixed mold FM. At this time, the mating surface FM3 of the fixed mold FM is at a position of Δ2 = L / 10 to L / 2 in the optical axis direction from the innermost side of the fixed mold FM. Therefore, the molded product is stuck to the movable mold MM side. Further, since the tapered surface slope FM2 plays the role of a taper, the punching resistance of the fixed mold FM is further reduced. In addition, since the lens to be molded has a tapered surface around the lens part, it is possible to suppress the lens part from becoming thick, to suppress the shrinkage of the lens part, and to obtain a highly accurate lens part. Can do. Further, the volume of the entire lens is reduced, and the material is reduced, so that the cost is reduced. In addition, by providing an appropriate roughened surface, there is an effect of improving releasability.
Next, as shown in FIG. 2C, the nesting mold BM is relatively moved so as to protrude from the main mold AM. Then, the optical surface of the
According to the present embodiment, the mating surface FM3 of the fixed mold FM is positioned at Δ2 = L / 10 to L / 2 in the optical axis direction from the innermost side of the fixed mold FM, so that the gate GT is an optical surface. It can be separated from S2, and the plastic piece and the polished portion are suppressed from adhering to the optical surface S2 when the gate is cut or polished. Further, even if burrs occur on the parting line, there is little risk that broken burrs will adhere to the lens optical surface.

FIG. 3 is a diagram illustrating manufacturing steps (a) to (d) of the lens according to the second embodiment. This embodiment is an example in which the optical axis direction distance Δ2 from the innermost part of the fixed mold FM to the mating surface FM3 of the fixed mold FM is larger than that of the first embodiment. Since other configurations are the same as those of the above-described embodiment, the description thereof is omitted.

(Fourth embodiment)

(Fifth embodiment)

(Example)
Hereinafter, the result of the study conducted by the present inventor will be described. The inventor changed the position of the parting line in the mold shown in FIG. 2, and evaluated the releasability and the degree of contamination during gate cutting. The evaluation results are shown in Table 1. The evaluation criteria for releasability in the table are as follows.
◎: Very good ○: Good △: Somewhat bad ×: Bad
On the other hand, the evaluation criteria for the degree of contamination during gate cutting are as follows.
Evil: 10 or more pieces of plastic or abrasive powder are attached Normal: 5 to 9 pieces of plastic or abrasive powder are attached Good: 4 or less pieces of plastic or abrasive powder are attached or absent
According to the results in Table 1, the releasability from the movable mold is X when Δ2 defining the position of the parting line is L / 15, and Δ when L / 12, but Δ2 = L. / 10 to L / 2 was good, and Δ2 was larger than 5L / 8. On the other hand, the releasability from the fixed mold is ◎ if Δ2 is smaller than L / 10, and Δ2 = L / 8 to L / 2, while it is ◯, whereas Δ2 is larger than 5L / 8. Met. Therefore, it was found that the range satisfying both releasing properties was Δ2 = L / 10 to L / 2.
On the other hand, according to the evaluation of the degree of dirt at the time of gate cut, if Δ2 is smaller than L / 12 (bad), Δ2 = L / 10 to L / 8 (ordinary), and if larger than L / 5. (Good). In summary, it was found that when the parting line position is Δ2 = L / 10 to L / 2, both the releasability and the antifouling property are satisfied. 3 to 6 as long as the position of the parting line is within the range of Δ2 = L / 10 to L / 2, releasability from the movable mold and the fixed mold, and dirt resistance. It turns out that it satisfies.
