Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:The 1-biphenylylethanol derivative of formula I (R is H or 1-10C alkyl). EXAMPLE:4'-(1-Hydroxyethyl)-4-biphenylcarboxylic acid ethyl ester. USE:Useful as an intermediate for pharmaceuticals, agricultural chemicals, etc., especially as an intermediate for organic electronic materials, particularly for liquid crystal compounds. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be produced in high yield, by reducing acetylbiphenyls of formula III in the presence of more than stoichiometric amount, usually 1-10 times equivalent (based on the compound of formula III) of a reducing agent able to reduce only ketones (e.g., NaBH4) in an organic solvent (e.g., chloroform) at -30-+100 deg.C. The starting compound of formula III can be easily produced by the thermal solvolysis of cyanobiphenyls of formula II in water or a 1-10C alcohol in the presence of an acid or a base.
