Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a composite material excellent in thermoformability, heat resistance, etc., and suitable as an automobile ceiling material by forming inorganic fibers and fibers and a powder of a thermoplastic resin into a matlike material, laminating platy materials fusible in a molten state of the fibers and powder of the thermoplastic resin from both surfaces thereof and pressurizing and compressing the resultant laminate. CONSTITUTION: (A) Inorganic fibers such as glass fibers are mixed with (B) fibers and a powder of a thermoplastic resin such as polyethylene so as to provide preferably (1:5) to (10:1) weight ratio of the components A:B and formed into a matlike material having a density of preferably 0.01-0.2 g/cm<3> by, e.g. a carding machine. (C) Platy materials fusible in a molten state of the component B such as a polyester sheet are then laminated from both surfaces of the matlike material and the resultant laminate is heated to the melting temperature of the component B or above, pressurized and compressed and subsequently depressurized to increase the thickness. The resultant material is then cooled to produce the objective composite material.
