Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain superior dispersion stability, photosensitivity, red reproduction performance, and stability against repeated uses by forming a photoconductive layer containing a specified bisazo compound on a conductive substrate. CONSTITUTION:The photoconductive layer to be formed on the conductive substrate contains at least one of the bisazo compounds represented by formula I in which A is a group represented by formula II or III; R is H, halogen, or the like; B is a coupler residue represented by one of formulae IV-IX; Z is an atomic group necessary to form an aromatic hydrocarbon ring or hetero ring; C is carbamoyl or sulfamoyl; R1 is H, optionally substituted alkyl, or the like; M is aryl; each of R2 and R3 is alkyl, aralkyl, or the like; and Y is divalent aromatic hydrocarbon group or a divalent group having N in its ring, thus permitting high photosensitivity and color sensitivity to be obtained.
