Abstract

PURPOSE:To select proper engine brake force without surging according to road status by operating exhaust brake means and turbine brake means individually or jointly. CONSTITUTION:Engine brake means comprise exhaust brake means 5 for opening and closing an exhaust passage 3 and turbine brake means 6 for applying braking force to a crankshaft 4 by a turbine wheel 16 rotated by input from a driving force transmission system. In this arrangement, the turbine brake means 6 can vary the braking force by operating a throttle valve 37 by a step motor 39 controlled by a controller 40 to regulate the amount of air discharged from a discharge port 19 according to a fluid pressure change detected by a pressure sensor 60. Further, the exhaust brake means 5 and the turbine brake means 6 are controlled to operate individually by a relay circuit 25. Thus, the braking force can be selected arbitrarily and properly according to the gradient of road and kick.
