Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled polymer at a high rate of reaction, facilitating the dehydration of the product, by carrying out the separation of an oil from water in the presence of a poor solvent of the reaction raw material and the reaction product and circulating the oil component to the reaction system. CONSTITUTION:(A) Phenols (e.g. cresol) are mixed with (B) aldehydes (e.g. benzaldehyde) and the mixture is added with (C) a poor solvent of the reaction raw material and the reaction product and having a boiling point of preferably 65-120 deg.C (e.g. cyclohexane). The amount of the poor solvent is preferably 5-200pts.wt. per 100pts.wt. of the component A. The components are made to react with each other e.g. at 40-120 deg.C and the obtained azeotropic mixture is separated into water and solvent in a separation tube. The solvent is returned to the reaction system and the reaction is continued to obtain the objective polymer.
