Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the title carbonaceous formed insulating material suitable for a nonoxidizing-atmosphere furnace, etc., and having excellent insulating property and heat resistance by impregnating a random web wherein carbon fibers are two-dimensionally oriented at random with a resin to be carbonized, laminated and compacting the webs, and calcining the compact. CONSTITUTION:Carbon fiber is formed into a monofilament, and the monofilaments and a random webber, etc., are used to produce the random web wherein carbon fibers having 0.01-0.05g/cm<3> bulk density are two- dimensionally oriented at random. The web is impregnated with a dil. soln. obtained by dissolving 5-25pts.wt. of the resin, such as phenolic resin which is easily carbonized in high yield, in 100pts.wt. of a solvent such as an alcohol having <=100 deg.C b.p. and water so that the weight ratio of the carbon fiber to the carbonizing resin is controlled to 6/4-9/1. The web is then heated at <=100 deg.C to gradually remove the solvent, the webs are laminated, compacted, and formed to desired shape and thickness, and the compact is cured, calcined, and graphitized.
