Abstract

PURPOSE:To miniaturize an optical integrated circuit, to allow it to have a high performance, and to simplify the constitution, by forming a light receiving/ emitting element in the vicinity of the end part of an optical waveguide on the surface of a semiconductor substrate. CONSTITUTION:On a semiconductor substrate 1, an optical waveguide 2 is formed, and on the surface of said semiconductor substrate 1, a light receiving/ emitting element 3 which is positioned in the vicinity of the end part of the optical waveguide 2 and has a light receiving/emitting part 4 is formed. Also, on the semiconductor substrate 1, a minute reflecting mirror 5 (optical path converting part) which is positioned in the vicinity of the end part of the optical waveguide 2 and brings the optical waveguide 2 and the light receiving/emitting element 3 to optical coupling is installed. The optical waveguide 2 formed on the semiconductor substrate 1 and the light receiving/emitting element 3 formed in the vicinity of this end part can be brought to optical coupling efficiently, therefore, the optical integrated circuit can be miniaturized easily, and also, the constitution is simplified.
