Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve the oxidization-resistance of rhodium at higher temperatures so as to lengthen the service life by placing a catalyst comprising palladium as its primary active constituent in the first stage and placing another catalyst in the second stage comprising rhodium as its primary active constituent with cerium added thereto. CONSTITUTION:Mixed gas containing hydrocarbon fuel and air is supplied to a combustor having in its first stage a catalyst comprising palladium as the primary active constituent and another catalyst in its second stage comprising rhodium as the primary constituent with cerium added, where the fuel is oxidized and burned. Since palladium is highly capable of causing ignition, the fuel is ignited by palladium in the first stage, and a high-temperature combustion of the ignited fuel is sustained in the second stage by rhodium. At this time, the oxidization of rhodium is prevented by the cerium additive. The quantity of cerium additive should be enough to prevent the oxidization of rhodium, preferably 0.1-10wt.%.
