Abstract

PURPOSE:To efficiently synthesize a chemical product by an electrolytic synthesis method by utilizing an electrolyte of an electrolyte flow type electrolytic cell as a mediator for an oxidation reduction reaction. CONSTITUTION:An anode 5 is formed of carbon fibers and carbon fibers having >=0.02 surface atomic number ratio measured by an ESCA (photoelectron spectrochemical analysis method) of oxygen atoms or chlorine atoms with respect to carbon are used as a cathode 6 in the electrolytic cell segmented to an anode chamber 2 and a cathode chamber 3 by an anode plate 5, a cathode plate 6 and a cation exchange membrane 4. An aq. acidic iron chloride soln. of hydrochloric acid is used as an anolyte and an aq. acidic chromium chloride soln. of hydrochloric acid is used as a catholyte. The tervalent Cr in the catholyte is reduced to bivalent Cr by the electrolytic redaction and is admitted through an oxidation reaction mediator line 11a into a reaction vessel 10a where the chloroform contg. a non-water soluble aliphat. ketone introduced from an inlet 7a is reduced to alcohol. This alcohol is taken out of an outlet 8a. The bivalent Cr is oxidized to the tervalent Cr and is returned through the oxidation reaction mediator line 14a to the electrolytic cell 1 where the Cr is again reduced to the bivalent Cr and this Cr is cyclically used for synthesis of the alcohol again in the reaction vessel 9.
